Does anyone know what these symptoms mean?

Yesterday morning, my dog seemed terrified of something. There was no thunder but she was acting the way she does when there is; trembling, trying to ‘hide’ herself, panting and pacing. After an hour or so, she seemed to come good.

24 hours later, and she’s a nervous wreck again. Heavy panting, pacing the house, refusing to leave my side, trying to force herself out the door with me when I left.

I can’t hear or see anything out of the ordinary. Confused I’m about to call the vet, but does anyone have any ideas?

Well, you know what, don’t joke about it because she’s acting as if the house is haunted!

That said, it’s a 1990s build and about as unspooky as houses get.

Re: rats & mice - I’m sure there are some hanging around the garden, but she’s not scared of them. She chases them!

Snakes...eek, I can’t even go there. 😬

Dog hasn’t been off the bed all day, and it’s 1 in the afternoon. It’s completely unlike her. I feel so worried. 😕

Photo of the hole she smashed & chewed in the fence last night while I was out for < 1 hour!

Does anyone know what these symptoms mean?

Mine behaved a bit like that during a phantom pregnancy. In fact she behaved like that in labour too

HuskyMcClusky · 20/03/2018 06:08

She’s been spayed so it’s definitely not a real pregnancy at least!

She’s so listless. I feel bad for her.

Ah I see. Toothache? Earache? All sounds like pain to me

HuskyMcClusky · 20/03/2018 06:42

Yesterday, the vet checked her ears and teeth & gums, palpated her abdomen, checked her legs, took her temperature. She couldn’t find anything physical.

She’s literally spent all day in bed! She didn’t even get up to greet me when I came home.

Weirdly my dog has been like this for the first time ever and she’s 8. She’s been either listless, not coming to great me when I see her first thing in the morning/come in from outside when she normally runs round like a mad thing with a toy in her mouth. She’s been pacing, circling, can’t jump up on the sofa she sleeps and struggled jumping into the car. I haven’t seen her behave like this before. We have snow so ThePlatypus post really interested me. I have taken her to the vet and he gave her some painkillers/inflammatory tablets and she’s right as rain now.

Good luck with your pooch, it’s horribly worrying.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 20/03/2018 06:51

Also she was whining all night for a couple of nights and we couldn’t find a way to settle her. I wondered if it was a virus. Do dogs get viruses?

HuskyMcClusky · 20/03/2018 06:52

Thanks, Through. If she’s still like this tomorrow I’ll go back to the vet.

I love her so much, I’d be devastated if anything happened to her.

Just a thought, but might you have something electrical in your house making a noise that only she can hear? Could you try turning off the power at the mains for 10 minutes or so to see if that helps?
Also, could you take her to a friends house for a few hours to see if her behaviour is the same? You need to try and rule out things.
Also, I would be wanting an MRI scan of the whole dog. Just because you can't see something on the outside, doesn't mean there isn't something else going on.

HuskyMcClusky · 20/03/2018 08:32

The vet called me about an hour ago to follow up. I told her about the panicking last night and extreme listlessness today. She said to keep an eye on her overnight and then bring her in for a blood test tomorrow if she’s still not right.

Do you think I should insist on an MRI scan?

OP posts:
BiteyShark · 20/03/2018 08:43

If it was me I would go back for the blood test anyway. If that shows nothing and her behaviour is still not right I would go back again and ask for further tests.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 20/03/2018 11:32

Oh and my girl was also trembling and shaking, supposed to indicate pain? Good luck Husky, hope she’s ok.

Bedknobsandhoover · 21/03/2018 20:39

My dog behaved as though she was seeing ghosts off and on for a year before it turned into full blown epilepsy. It was well controlled with tablets and she lived another seven years.

Millipedewithherfeetup · 22/03/2018 09:04

How is everything op ?

Whitney168 · 22/03/2018 13:54

I'm a vet and a couple of weeks ago when we had the bad snow I was seeing about 3 cases a day of exactly this!

I wonder if you're my vet LOL. Interestingly, I took my 11.5 year old bitch to the vet at the end of the first snow here, and when the receptionist asked what was wrong the only thing I could say is that she was 'odd'.

She was wanting to go out in garden, but not doing anything unusual when out there, not weeing/pooing/vomiting. Indoors, she was regularly standing in corners. Eating well, exercising normally, and this whole thing was for a few hours a day only and seemed normal otherwise.

I ended up having blood tests done after vet could find no issues at all, just to put my own mind at rest that I wasn't ignoring anything. £170 down the drain for visit and bloods, and all negative LOL.

(Touch wood) She seems perfectly normal now, but was very much out of character for periods of a good few days.

Are the aliens coming for us ... ?!

Whitney168 · 22/03/2018 13:55

(As an aside, I am a 'seasoned dog person', and am not one to rush to the vet at all. She really was very odd.)

HuskyMcClusky · 22/03/2018 13:59

Well, she was fine yesterday and then today completely weird again. Trembling, licking her lips, rolling her eyes, huddling behind me as if for comfort. Just really, really odd. Only for an hour or so at a time, then back to normal.

I’ll wait and see how she goes over the next couple of days. Might be back to vet for tests next week.

Millipedewithherfeetup · 22/03/2018 17:54

I think a blood test might be in order now ?

HuskyMcClusky · 22/03/2018 21:20

Millipede, yes, I agree.

S0upertrooper · 22/03/2018 23:28

How old is she, could it be dementia? Our lab had a stoke and was acting a bit strange, after that she had seizures on a regular basis which was really scary for us and her. We found out she'd had a stroke after they gave her a brain scan.

What about trying her with a thunder coat? Bit like a tight vest that helps to reassure them?

HuskyMcClusky · 22/03/2018 23:34

S0uper, she’s only 5, although I guess it’s possible.

I’ll talk to the vet about a thundercoat when I go in. I have heard good things about them. Yesterday she seemed to get some comfort from wedging herself up against me as tightly as possible.

She is such a happy, lively dog when this isn’t happening. Sad

Have just read your thread Husky wanted to send my best wishes, i hope your dog is ok? I wondered if there is any underground drilling or anything going on? Could you try doggy ear defenders?
Looking forward to your update.

HuskyMcClusky · 23/03/2018 03:24

Thanks Sarf, that is kind. Well, she seems perfectly fine at the moment but I spoke to my vet this morning (who is actually very good about following up and being proactive. She suggested trying to distract the dog with treats and see if she’ll eat when she’s having an ‘episode’. She also asked me to try and get video of her doing it if it happens over the weekend (Friday midday here). We will see what happens!
