Pugs

So DH and I have been looking for a family pet for a while now. We've settled on a pug after a lot of research. I've been on touch with an amazing and very knowledgeable breeder who has recommended a breeder to us who has pups that are ready to go. She knows the breeder well and her dog was the stud for this litter so I feel like we'd be making a good choice taking on a pup from this line.
We go to visit in a few days with the possible plan of bringing him home if we decide we want to take him.
I now need to hear from you all about pugs. I would like owner experiences and want to know everything. The good, bad and the ugly! I think it will be a lot more helpful than the articles I've read online. Anything is appreciated so thank you very much in advance!

He's beautiful. You have some lovely times ahead. Good luck.

BiteyShark · 10/03/2018 06:12

He's home and settled even managed a pee on his puppy mat.

Even if you have a few weeks free insurance from the breeder if he's home and you haven't already get that insurance done today as most have a 2 week period where they don't cover you for illnesses so anything during that time ends up as a pre existing clause.

MaitlandGirl · 10/03/2018 06:25

He’s gorgeous :) best piece of advice I was given for dealing with the dog hair was to use a damp swifter type mop on the floors. The hair sticks to it and doesn’t get blown around as much as with a vacuum or dry broom.

DD2s boyfriends parents have got 3 pugs and she’s always covered in hair when she comes home. They’ve got fawn pugs so she tries to avoid wearing black clothes when she goes over.

Word of warning for you - pugs are addictive! I don’t know anyone whose ever managed to stop at one :D

Myusernameisunique · 10/03/2018 07:38

@BiteyShark 5weeks free insurance with the KC registered whilst we were at the breeders last night. He went to sleep in his crate last night at 11:30pm in the lounge and didn't hear a peep out of him till just after 6am this morning. I thought we'd have a rough night but he was just perfect.
@MaitlandGirl I've got one of those mops already actually! Use it for drying my floors. Im guessing it'll be used daily!

I have a pug, and he has had health problems. A terrible ulcer on his left eye that we still don't know how he acquired, he was just happily roaming in our garden and came back with a closed eye Sad. It was traumatic for everyone but with really dedicated care (eye drops on the hour, every hour from 6am to midnight, for two weeks) we saved his eye. Yes, his eyes bulge out.

Other than that, we keep him VERY trim, which for him is a tragedy since he is a little glutton. He gets walked twice a day on long walks, and the rest of the time he sleeps and if any of us are around, you can find him on our laps. Pugs are lapdogs through and through, initially we wanted him to sit on his bed while we watched TV but we have long lost that battle and he now squeezes us into opposite corners of the sofa as he makes himself comfortable Grin. Our bed is the last frontier that we've managed to hold strong...for now.

He sheds like a motherf*cker.

He has a fantastic temperament and is a bit of a clown. We just can't imagine life without him!

MRSJWRTWR · 10/03/2018 08:43

Enjoy - he’s beautiful. This was us this time last year! Good luck with the toilet training. I know some pugs can take ages but our little guy was surprisingly easy.

PUGaLUGS · 10/03/2018 08:46

I have a pug, she is nearly 6. No breathing problems or health issues.

I have her insured with Pet Protect - top cover and pay around £21 per month.

Since we changed her to raw feeding she hasn’t shed as much as she used to.

She is a very socialable little dog, loves other dogs and loves humans more - especially the little old ladies in the village that have treats in their pockets.

We walk her three times a day, although with any dog we wouldn’t take her out in summer at mid day in the blazing sun.

Yes to whoever said “google zoomies” 😂

PUGaLUGS · 10/03/2018 08:50

Love him and his name!

Here is Kiki

You may be anti-crossbreeds, but they are often much healthier due to a diverse gene pool.

A cavapoo is a gorgeous-personality little dog, looks very cute, doesn't shed and doesn't need much exercise. Also loves kids.

Good luck with your decision!

BiteyShark · 10/03/2018 09:27

Check you are happy with their t&cs with their free insurance because if you have any illnesses now you will be stuck with them or would have a pre existing clause if you move.

Veterinari · 10/03/2018 11:14

Very cute but he has very narrow nostrils. He will almost certainly experience chronic air hunger - it’s hugely distressing.

Also sorry to sound negative but Kiki does have breathing problems - you can see from the tense expression and effort she’s using to pant in the photos. Again likely to experience chronic air hunger.

Breathlessness/air hunger is a significant animal welfare problem experienced by brachycephalics www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/25004795/

It’s really sad that people who clearly love their dogs are so unable to recognise the negative impacts they are creating when they financially support conformations which cause suffering.

olliegarchy99 · 10/03/2018 11:46

Upset to see any dog wearing a dress/skirt - but to each their own PUG. Not being overly judgy I hope but it is not something I would ever do.

pigsDOfly · 10/03/2018 12:09

Yes those photos show a dog who is clearly not breathing easily, and sorry but there is nothing cute about those bulging eyes.

And the pink tutu? Oh dear.

Ditzyitzy · 10/03/2018 14:29

veteninary If they don’t pant is their breathing ok? My flat faced never pants like others seem too. She does have a pronounced nose though. OP he will need his nostrils doing, again insurance won’t cover!

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 10/03/2018 14:32

Tutu on a dog 🙄

DressAndGo · 10/03/2018 14:56

It's so sad. When will people put animal welfare over their own greed?

Temperament good? Then the focus ought to be on breeding healthy dogs with the temperament of the Pug.

Veterinari · 10/03/2018 15:01

veteninary If they don’t pant is their breathing ok? My flat faced never pants like others seem too. She does have a pronounced nose though. OP he will need his nostrils doing, again insurance won’t cover!

All dogs will pant with exertion/high temps but brachys have such narrowed airways that they need to mouth breathe and use much more exertion to draw breath in than dogs with normal muzzle lengths.

Vets are moving away from nostril- opening surgery now - it’s something that has been shown to have minimal benefits as dogs with narrowed nostrils will have significantly compressed airways overall and simply opening up the nostrils won’t address the overall problem - think of it like breathing through a drinking straw, permanently.

These CT images show the level of abnormality experiences by brachys regardless of nostril conformation

Peanutbuttercups21 · 10/03/2018 15:17

I want to go and put a tutu on my lurcher now, her Hmm face would be legendary Grin

pigsDOfly · 10/03/2018 15:25

Actually, Peanut I think that might look quite smart. Can just imagine those lovely long elegant lurcher legs in a frilly tutu. You might start a trend - just kidding.

PUGaLUGS · 10/03/2018 20:15

My girl can breathe perfectly thank you.

She went to a pug valentines party and won first prize for her outfit. She doesn’t wear tutus as a rule.

And yes you are judging otherwise you wouldn’t mention it Hmm

Hateloggingin · 10/03/2018 20:20

Well it is a bit embarrassing to put a tutu on a dog, come on... who wouldn’t judge? I’d assume you were a bit thick at least.

happyvalley74 · 10/03/2018 20:44

Come come ladies.
