Thanks BiteyShark, I will adjust my expectations! I've never done this before... Two steps forward, a step back then. My friend is joking that I'm doing Gina Ford for puppies... it's a bit like that then - fine in print, less successful in real life!

BiteyShark · 10/08/2018 16:51

MrsMaisel I found that as soon as you think you have cracked it and 'relax' a little they do a really big pee on the floor Grin

It sounds like you are doing all the right things so it is just a matter of time and them developing better bladder control as they get older.

Our puppy took months to housetrain. He’s now been clean and dry for a couple of months but still occasionally leaves a puddle or a poo without any reason.
I fear he will go on doing this for life and it is so random that we can’t train him out of it. We are taking him away with us soon and I’m afraid of him weeing on somebody else’s carpet.

BiteyShark · 12/08/2018 06:29

almonds mine had the odd moment during his teenage period. Once he peed on a new house mat but I think it was the smell as I washed it and he never did it again. The second time a short while after recovering from an illness he peed in the hall. However he had been previously admitted for several nights at the vets so I think it was all just confusing for him as he had to soil his crate at the vets. Each time I just went back to basics as if he was a puppy and took him outside and praised for a few days after those incidents and he has been ok since.

Maybe when you go away revert back to puppy training so outside and praise for a bit just to reinforce where you want him to go when you are away.

This is my little 9 week old beauty

Really struggling to get her to want to be clean. The other night it rained and I dutifully took her out in the middle of the night... for half an hour in the rain. She did nothing.
Then when I gave up she ran into her bed and did the biggest wee a 9 week old pup could possibly manage! Now there's a wet Mum and a wet dog both staring at a wet bed!

I've also had two of my best t shirts ripped by nipping. My fault for wearing them, but I've never come away with ripped clothes from puppies before, so I wasn't expecting it. Now I have to try and wear all my rubbish clothes, which doesn't feel very nice.

But she's currently sleeping cuddled up to my feet and I love 💕 this part of having a dog. So it makes it all worth it in the end!

Lovely puppy, Autumn.

May I join? GrouchyPuppy is 9 weeks, we've had her for 1 and things are going OK. She's a Newfoundland so not a tiny puppy!

I'm mostly unsure about this nighttime stuff. We've decided to leave puppy pads down for her overnight and give her run of the kitchen. She tries really hard to pee on the pads but almost always manages to get the edges; what am I doing wrong?!

Daytime training is going fairly well, I think. She mostly goes on command outside, but will sometimes pee inside again 5 minutes later. My floors have never been mopped so often.

Oh please can I join? I have a 12 week old Dalmatian that I am only just surviving!

duplodancer · 21/09/2018 07:56

Sorry, details!
He is fine being left overnight in the kitchen but doesn't like the crate and tends to use it as a toilet so although we give him treats in it sometimes it's usually shut off if he's not supervised and he just sleeps on rugs and blankets on the floor.
He poos outside so that's good.
We don't get up in the night and so he used puppy pads by the doors for wees but usually goes outside in the day.

Sleeps 10 to 6.30 and I leave him for a couple of hours each day for work etc.
Worst thing is constant supervision outside - he finds a new way to escape the garden every day and makes himself sick almost every day eating stuff he shouldn't. It's exhausting. So desperate to be able to get out post vaccs as he's massive and I can't carry him around so we're really confined to home which is making him crazy.
It's been a massive shock for me how full on puppies are despite growing up on a farm!!

Autumn2018 · 21/09/2018 11:28

You have my sympathies @duplodancer - I'm in a similar position but a few weeks behind you age-wise (9 weeks here).

I have found it quite surprising mine is happy to soil her sleeping area. I wasn't sure if it was because she was brought up for the first 8 weeks of her life living outdoors in a huge shed, with feee range in a farm type situation (horses, chickens, cats) in huge grounds.

After one week we had no improvement, but then around 9 days she stopped peeing in her bed at last. Like you, we lay pads down at night, and she is very private with her poo's, hiding in undergrowth whenever she can.

I am absolutely shattered though! The hardest thing for us is her biting, I've had two lovely tops ripped in just one week. And I have two children that get understandably upset by it. Bitter apple spray seems to make very little difference as it needs to be reapplied every 10 minutes or so. Can't keep her in the crate for chewing and so am spending all my days watching and saying "no!" ... which is exhausting!

laurely · 23/09/2018 12:33

Can I join please . I have a 10 week old St. Bernard and I’m finding the biting and chewing really difficult . She’s great most of the time then she just flips! It’s like jekyl and Hyde . Then she will spend 10 minutes biting and nipping before crashing out to sleep . I’m worn down and stressed by those times. I’ve tried standing still and saying a sharp no but she has bitten holes in my leggings . I’ve also tried time outs but she’s heavy so I’m struggling to pick her up to put her in time out. Advice much appreciated . TIA

BiteyShark · 23/09/2018 12:42

laurely you can do timeouts by moving yourself out of the way e.g. behind a baby gate for a few minutes. Essentially it's about finding a way to show that the fun stops when they get too bitey.

Autumn2018 · 23/09/2018 13:16

Anyone else had house-training suspended by rainy days?

My 9 week older refuses to do anything outside when it's wet. Quite happy to be obliging when it's dry though!

We had got the the stage where the only accidents were when we were not observing, and even then, she took herself off outside to pee most of the time.

Comes one rainy weekend and it's the other way around. Nearly 100% toilets are all over the house and even when I stand outside for ages huddled under an umbrella, nothing actually happens! Shock

laurely · 23/09/2018 14:28

Thankyou bitey . Believe it or not I never thought to remove myself ! I’ll try that . Here she is btw. Titch

BiteyShark · 23/09/2018 14:33

Awww she's lovely laurely

Autumn2018 we did toilet training in the middle of winter and it was grim. I remember standing outside for an hour at a time forcing the issue iykwim. Does your puppy just stand/sit when it's raining? Is so maybe look at getting her to move about a bit as that can help them to toilet. You probably only need her to do it a couple of times with big praise and then she will realise she gets to come back in the warmth quickly if she toilets straight away.

duplodancer · 23/09/2018 17:12

Yes Autumn - same issue. Not keen on the rain at all. Wondering if I ought to get him a coat. Grin

Autumn2018 · 23/09/2018 18:20

My Mum suggested erecting a gazebo outside in the garden! GrinGrin

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 23/09/2018 18:54

BastardPup still doesn't like weeing outside in the rain. It's getting too bloody cold to have the door open all the time and so he piddled on the rug the other day rather than brave the drizzle.

His bitiness is calming down I think

So much for low shedding - groomed him today and got enough hair to knit a spare dog!

Honeymoonmummy · 23/09/2018 19:29

Hi all, can I please join too? Getting an 8 week old puppy in 3 weeks and the reality is just kicking in!!!

GrouchyKiwi · 23/09/2018 20:27

She's lovely, laurely. GrouchyPup has been fine with peeing in the rain, but she is a Newfoundland so water is her thing.

We were doing really well with the house training till yesterday. I think she peed more inside than out then. Have been hyper-vigilant this afternoon and have only had one accident so that's a good restart.

Our biggest issue is the nipping. We've got three small children and she wants to play with them all the time. They're finding the nipping really hard to deal with, and I've got two pairs of PJs and a pair of leggings with large holes in them. Argh!

Hi please can I join?
I have a 12 week old bichon she is so lovely but wow it is hard work.

She's into everything, has to be watched constantly due to dangers, cries as soon as I leave the room, wants to be in the garden all day long and won't come back in, is bitey, chews everything, eats stones outside, leaves, poo etc
She sleeps ok at night most nights in crate (5 or 6 hours or so)
Very fussy with food and treats
Using puppy pads about half the time.

Goldylover · 24/09/2018 00:49

Can I join? We're getting a golden retriever :) I cannot wait but Its been a loooong time since I've had puppies!

briteside · 24/09/2018 11:29

Hello! Can I join? We picked up our 5 month rescue pup (We think Kokoni mix), on Saturday. She is absolutely the sweetest thing, doing very well on house training and slowly building her confidence.....but suffering from severe separation anxiety and not eating much at all. Really happy to be here though!

Can anyone recommend floor cleaner for puppy training?

Ideally I want something to disinfect as well as contain the right enzymes to erase the smell of toileting, and hopefully deter this practice in my house!

I'm told normal floor cleaner contains ammonia which makes the puppy think they can wee anywhere they like.

I'm Immunodeficient after very toxic treatment and have young children, so keen to have disinfectant of some sort in the mix too.

So I found Zoflora which contains odour neutraliser and disinfectant. But the smell is so overpowering DH can't hope and had begged me to change to something else!

Do I need to mop twice each time - once for odour removal and one to disinfect? Or are they any other products containing both?

Oh, and, it's a stone floor so can't cope with too many chemicals! HmmConfused
