We are in a red warning zone and have two small kids. Dogs haven't been walked yesterday and today! Had a prance round in snow though. Feel really sad for them.

Dog freaked anyway due to the snow!

rascallyrascal · 02/03/2018 19:13

Oh no! Poor dogs. Must be hard for them. I heard the grit was bad for their paws too.

Grit is bad for paws.
Mine are lazy arses so a week without a walk doesn't bother them! I do have 3 big gardens though so can run around if they want. ( end plot house ) The littlest two not been out much as they can't even see over the top of the snow. The Labrador and laziest has been out, he tends to bark indoors when he's to much energy but he's just been asleep for 3 days and had one walk a day !

Happened · 02/03/2018 19:20

Yes mine are, one of mine gets really bad snow clumps between their feet and is limping within minutes so they can't really go out much in the snow.

The first day Resident Collie refused to go out. I had to go out, slipped and injured my knee. Resident Collie now accompanies me hobbling round with a walking stick for a few minutes each day, so long as she's got her t-shirt on.

isitevergoingtogetbetter · 02/03/2018 19:23

My terrier I chase round the house to go out !

Aprilmightmemynewname · 02/03/2018 19:25

We have a husky and she has embraced the snow wholeheartedly!!

SilverHairedCat · 02/03/2018 19:27

Yep, husky cross here. Eating all the snow. Loves it. Whines to go back out. Is permanently knackered at the moment! We're lucky to have a grass area right outside the house for her to run on, so she's not been in gritted areas, but I'm still washing her paws.

rascallyrascal · 02/03/2018 19:32

Jasmine82- hope your knee is better soon. I love hearing about the ways dogs react to the snow! Some of them are so funny!

Mine is out of his little tree. He's a hyperactive little monster on the best of days, but he was neutered the day before the snow started and I haven't been willing to let him out much in all this weather with a healing wound. He's Bouncing. Off. The. Walls.

Currently racing around the garden barking his head off. He'll be in in a minute looking for something to destroy.

Sassgee · 02/03/2018 19:34

Got a Springer Spaniel here and after being cautious with her first glimpse of snow yesterday she has fully loved playing in it with us today. Admittedly she hasn't had her normal routine but has been out with us and our sons (5&2) enjoying the snow. Even managed the beach today too.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 02/03/2018 19:35

DDog is not a four seasons sort of dog. I've had to bring in multiple short walks per day, aided by WFH snow days

I've been upping the enrichment activity - he hasn't seen a bowl in days. Kongs, Kong wobbler, snuffle mat, new kong jumbler, scatter feeding, learning a new trick.

At least we've managed to keep the playful ankle biting to a bare minimum - that's the first sign he's in desperate need of a long walk.

randomuntrainedcuntowner · 02/03/2018 19:38

No but my child is! She is literally bouncing off the walls and climbing the door frames and driving me mad! 😩

moosemama · 02/03/2018 19:40

Two lurchers here. They are very much of the opinion that the best place for them is under a blanket.

Youngest dog asks to go out, steps off the back step, gives me an accusatory look and legs it back inside again. To be fair though he has zero body fat and very little fur, despite being a rough-coat, so he really feels the cold, even with his fleece coat on.

My oldie lad was a bit giddy when he first saw the snow, but has been actively avoiding going out in it ever since. He went out for a wee earlier and came back with balled snow packed between his pads that I had to remove and now he’s refusing to go out at all. Hmm He used to love snow when we had our old Border Collie x Belgian Terv. They would chase each other around in it for hours, but he won’t go outside with our current upstart of a youngster.

JaneEyre70 · 02/03/2018 19:44

Can some of your dogs have a word with my cocker spaniel please Grin. We've done less than usual, only 8000 steps today (me, not him) but he did have a coat of wax on his paws and a fleece jumper with a waterproof over. And even then he had to be dragged back indoors and have his paws bathed in warm water. He's been charging round with the grandkids in the garden too. He's a nutter. But lovely especially with snow pom poms hanging off his bum Grin.

Greyhorses · 02/03/2018 19:47

We’ve done more than usual as ours love it!

I also love the fact there is NO MUD Grin

Aprilmightmemynewname · 02/03/2018 20:04

Moose - my Lurchers loved it yesterday! Though usually this is them -

April they’re lovely!

My older lad was never bothered by the weather until recently. He’s part Deerhound, part Bearded Collie, so has plenty of thick fur. Unfortunately now he’s 13 he has arthritis and I think the cold aggravates it.

Younger lad is a wuss of mammoth proportions about just about everything and will always choose the easy or most comfortable option. Grin

bigsighall · 02/03/2018 21:36

Nope. Vaseline on paws and out we went. He loved it

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 02/03/2018 23:04

I've seen a couple of people mention Vaseline / wax on paws before you go out. Is this a thing?

I've just had PestDog go out wearing an equafleece but every so often I discover all the dog owning knowledge I picked up from my grandparents is 60 years out of date... Should I be putting Vaseline on every time? I don't want to over soften his paw pads as he's a London dog that walks on tarmac daily and I can't guarantee he won't walk over broken glass and other nasties

Jasmin82 · 02/03/2018 23:08

rascallyrascal It makes a change. It's normally Resident Collie who is behind me getting injured. At one point we did wonder if she had taken out an insurance policy on me!
Unimpressed Resident Collie.

JaneEyre70 · 02/03/2018 23:18

I've just used paw wax today as it's so cold. It's also good for keeping the salt/grit off their paws as it can burn them. But most of the time he doesn't need anything, it can make their paws too soft. I will use it if we are doing a long road walk or in cold weather below freezing.

Gladisgood · 03/03/2018 08:47

We went out as normal. Wrapped up warm - 2 layers of coats on my wussie Dobermann. We had a great time.

missbattenburg · 03/03/2018 08:56

Snow-obsessed springer here. We've had loads of lovely snowy walks and he STILL asks to go out and play in the garden every 20mins.

The two JRTs, however, can only stand about 10 mins of cold before begging to come back in Grin. They are old and much prefer a cosy life.

I am also LOVING the lack of mud. It's like a holiday for me because I haven't had to clean the floor is days (I need a life).
