How can I convince DH to rescue this whippet?

We have a whippet already - he is gorgeous, loving, friendly, great at being left on his own, amazing recall and we all adore him.

But as most whippet owners will tell you, one is never enough. And I just saw this gorgeous fawn/blue female on a rescue site - 1 yr old (ours is only 17 mths), who had been abandoned to freeze/starve. She’s not far from us and I’d love to at least go and see her...

But DH says no Sad. How can I convince him to at least visit her?

I should add that I work from home so am around the majority of the day and do all the dog care during the week - long walks every day and playing with DDog. DH loves DDog but is only around evenings and weekends...

Why does your DH say no?

BiteyShark · 21/01/2018 11:03

What are his reasons and are they valid? Another set of bills, training etc?

tkband3 · 21/01/2018 11:20

He hasn’t elaborated on his reasons, but they would be purely practical - additional costs of insurance, food etc, sofa/bed space Smile, whereas I’m coming from a purely emotional standpoint. So I know he’s right really, but I would really like to persuade him otherwise!

hm, well if money is tight and you can't afford the additional costs.
perhaps he has a point.
two would be lovely though I agree

averythinline · 21/01/2018 11:26

Can you work out the additional cost and is there anyway you can earn a bit more to cover it? it does seem a lovely thing todo..
am no whippett xpert but are they sort of dogs that like socialness a friend rescued greyhounds and they (the dogs)~ always seemed a bit 'meh' about each other......

Notasperfectasallothermners · 21/01/2018 11:27

Tell him you will diet so dog food can come from your food allowance?? Grin

BiteyShark · 21/01/2018 11:28

The thing is all those practical issues will impact your DH so it doesn't matter that you would be the one at home doing most of the walking etc.

He probably knows that if you 'just' went to see the dog you would then just put more emotional pressure on him to change his mind.

The only thing you can do is to decide how seriously you want another dog (let alone whether this one is the right dog) and how seriously he doesn't.

I was the one that wanted our dog but if my DH has said no and meant it then I know I wouldn't have had BiteyDog.

tkband3 · 21/01/2018 12:28

We’re not skint - we’re lucky in that we’re comfortable but having been made redundant last year, DH is understandably cautious. Although we did get DDog just after that...

You all make excellent points - if he is adamant, then I won’t push it.

I do need to diet though Notasperfect - great idea Grin.

Can you link to her on the rescue website? I think we need to be able to see her to properly advise.....😀

tkband3 · 21/01/2018 12:51

Here she is...www.pets4homes.co.uk/classifieds/1818860-beautiful-blue-fawn-whippet-female-epping.html

Are Pets4Homes a reputable site?

BiteyShark · 21/01/2018 13:12

Pets4homes is just an mechanism for advertising. The OP needs to look into the actual rescue center that the dog is in.

tkband3 · 21/01/2018 14:06

I’ve just checked and Epping Rescue Centre is run by one woman...if we did decide to go ahead I’d definitely look into it in much more depth before proceeding. Doubt we will though.

I've just had a look at the rescue site and the woman appears to be breeding and selling micro pigs, which are enormously problematic for several different reasons.

The dog might be brilliant, but I'm not sure I'd be going to a fundraiser for the rescue...

userxx · 21/01/2018 19:20

Does she want £400 for the dog? Am I reading that right. She is gorgeous, I'm sure she wouldn't take up too much space and whippets look so cute when they snuggle up together.

Oxfordblue · 21/01/2018 19:23

I think you should have her, 2 dogs lovely. We rescued our 2nd dog from MTAR last year & she's a lovely addition.
Although if you have a cat, I'd say no!
There isn't really that much difference in cost Grin

Notasperfectasallothermners · 21/01/2018 19:45

2 scratty dogs are so much better than 1...

tattychicken · 22/01/2018 10:12

It sounds a bit dodgy to me, and doesn't sound like a proper rescue.

tenbob · 22/01/2018 10:16

That's not a legit rescue- it smacks of someone using a sob story to sell on a dog

All rescues have a rehoming fee but I've never seen anyone charging that much. And no legit rescue would have concerns about dogs going to puppy farms because they would all be neutered before being rehomed

Beautiful looking dog but it's ringing so many alarm bells for me

tattychicken · 22/01/2018 10:53

There's a lovely whippet x called Hope at this rescue; www.southernlurcherrescue.org.uk/needinghomes.php

Icklepup · 22/01/2018 11:21

^ Hope is rehomed
