General dog chat

Anyone fancy a general dog chat thread?

BiteyDog is now almost 15 months old and it's about time we ditched the puppy survival thread for general chit chat but it's still nice to chat about our doggie dilemmas and days so if anyone wants to join me in wittering on saves BiteyDog having the listen to my incessant talking at him then welcome aboard.

How's all the dogs coping with the snow in the northern parts? I am sick of the rain and I guess fortunate enough that BiteyDog doesn't like it much either so apart from a 20 min ball run we are snuggled up in the house today.

@mustang27, my worst dog walking experience was after a particularly stormy night that blew over peoples bins, snowydog1 found a used sanitary towel and it was his favourite thing ever, I was gagging trying to get it off him

I am so glad the worst thing BiteyDog has tried to eat was a decaying mouse in the forest. Seems very tame compared to all these stories Grin

Pizzapup did the bin thing again yesterday and that and the half loaf of gluten free bread gave her explosive diarrhea from 2 am onwards.

I know what you mean with not knowing when you had a decent night sleep. I don't think I have had one since my DD was born.

I'm lucky too. Maxatdog hasn't done much really except steal a stick of frozen garlic bread from the worktop.

Just ringing the vet as he has woken up with a sticky bloodshot eye that he can barely open. Poor boy

I cannot tell you how many fried chicken bones I have retrieved from PestDog 's mouth. We're also in the inner city and people seem to think nothing of dropping them on the pavements Angry Worst was the whole jalapeno from someone's takeaway, for sheer squishiness as I pulled it from his jaws. Truly, it's vile.

He's currently in the garden chewing a raw bone that he was given and buried yesterday, and has dug up again today. The dog's a walking stereotype Grin

So, can I ask everybody, what do you do when you are sitting on the sofa having your dinner/breakfast/snack and you get those big brown eyes looking up at you? Do you ignore, does he/she get a taste/ leftovers/ get to lick the plate? And are you consistent? Just wondered what others do.

Report
rightsaidfrederickII · 26/01/2018 20:45

I ignore the big brown eyes - anything else leads to begging

If I want to provide a bit of human food, I'll use it as a training treat, drop it in his bowl, use it as Kong stuffing or otherwise deliver it in a way that is separate from me eating it.

I'm consistent. Visiting family are, however, incorrigible and then wonder why PestDog has got his paws on their knee at dinnertime while ignoring the fact that I have food Hmm

Perfectly Chaotic it sounds like our dogs would get on wonderfully Smile

One of the upsides of sending him to daycare is he can have play with other dogs without my stress levels going up! He really does look and sound ferocious and loves nothing better than getting mouthfuls of other dogs’ ears and necks to nibble on. He’s a super gentle boy with people though and loves kids.

When I’m eating I often shut Bluep out of the room. Otherwise I do sometimes give him a taste. He especially loves hot chips as a treat Blush

Yuck at all the gross things.
Maxat hope he's ok.
I never feed Wolfie my food. She's tall enough to help herself if she gets in the habit.
BIG news. I let her off lead today. In public! And she came back!!!!

apples We have never fed BiteyDog from the sofa or table when we are eating so now he tends to associate our food time as boring and goes to sleep. Given his sensitive stomach we have to be careful what we feed him so he doesn't get much human food although he goes crazy when we are preparing any thing with cheese so we do throw a few bits of grated cheese on the floor for him. Carrots are a treat so he gets them and unfortunately knows they come out of the fridge so we always get the pleading eyes every time the fridge opens Grin. He did snatch a bit of celery from DHs hand the other day as he got it out of the fridge Grin.

Wolfie that's good news about her coming back. BiteyDog seems to have found a renewed vigour for chasing birds so whilst his recall is spot on around horses/cows/people and dogs I do have to watch out now as he will chase a bird before coming back with a face that says 'but I came back just in a big circle' Hmm. Bloody training never ends Smile

Oh it was a big circle and no distractions! But a start. My worry is she's so big and could step on a smaller dog or frighten a person!

Yes people tend not to freak when a daft spaniel is running about but a big wolfhound might raise a few eyebrows Grin.

Hoping our agility lesson goes ahead today as it's only forecast light rain. He loves it so much he cries when he has to wait his turn Grin

Anyone else's dog sneezes a lot? BiteyDog is sneezing a bit but no other symptoms so can't decide what is irritating him.

Weirdly mine often sneezes at night when I wake her to go out and do a last wee.
I took a video of her running. Wish I could share it. Happy dog. Grin

Great news Wolfie!

It takes ages to trust them - I spent weeks of early off lead walks where I'd spend as much time walking backwards as I did forwards so that I always had eyes on him!

I'd be happy with a wolfhound coming towards him, but PestDog would be beside himself with reactivity Blush I did draw the line a few weeks ago at a muddy leonberger that almost slammed into me while playing with other dogs - good job I managed to jump out the way as it was enormous!

Well we had a fun time at agility although BiteyDog seemed very fearful again.

He tackled all the equipment with great enthusiasm but just didn't like it there at first (cowering and tail tucked firmly between his legs Sad) so I had to jolly him along.

He also had a 20 min ball play after so I am anticipating a very sleepy dog this afternoon Grin

Apples, cocodog from a puppy has always laid down when we are preparing or eating food. She does the same when the phone rings as well. We have never discouraged this😁
Bitey, Wolfie , we do the big loopy circle as well, I love to see her ears flapping with a big grin on her face as she pelts towards me knowing that she has gone a bit farther from me than I want but look mum I did come back to the whistle.
I think there will always be some training to brush up on or something new. Cocodog has never been much of a barker but has now decided to air her voice in the garden last thing at night presumably to warn off foxes and badgers.

steppedog has very selective recall when off lead, I am never as interesting as a bird or squirrel. He is getting better, I walk with a pocket full of treats and every time I call and he comes back he gets fuss and treats. He is such a runner that he tends to do huge loop/circles just because he is flat out running.
Having boasted on here about how well we were doing at lead traingin, I went out with a friend and her dog yesterday and he was totally crap!

apples steppedog is a 3 year old rescue, and he was a dreadful beggar when he first arrived. We have a rule that he is not allowed any of our food from our hands, very occasionally we put a bit in his bowl. When we are eating I send him inot his bed. Now I just have to point and say 'In your bed' and he retreats and lies down away from us. We only really eat in the lounge on a Saturday, pizza on the coffee table, now he is used to it, goes and lies down by the fire and ignores the table, We usually give him a nice chew/pigs ear to crunch on when we have pizza, and he is always fed before we eat, so he isn't hungry and begging.

Does anyone else have a dog that refuses to eat if you aren't around?

If I'm upstairs all day having a DVD day, (my dh is still down with the kids) madam won't touch her food at all. She won't eat treats, kids dropped food anything.

The second I come down, she's eating ravenously.

Separation anxiety?

Report
BiteyShark · 27/01/2018 18:28

Does she have any other signs of anxiety?

Could she be so used to you being around when she eats that she now waits? (Sounds daft but it took a while for BiteyDog to be happy to pee in the garden without me as he was so 'used' to me always being there with him)

Yeah she does to be honest, but it's very random

As long as she's had her morning walk, I can go out and leave her at home with no issue.

Madam is coming to end of hers. Bleeding finished a few days ago but she's still swollen. So I expect her phantom pregnancy to start any day now.
