Anyone fancy a general dog chat thread?

BiteyDog is now almost 15 months old and it's about time we ditched the puppy survival thread for general chit chat but it's still nice to chat about our doggie dilemmas and days so if anyone wants to join me in wittering on saves BiteyDog having the listen to my incessant talking at him then welcome aboard.

How's all the dogs coping with the snow in the northern parts? I am sick of the rain and I guess fortunate enough that BiteyDog doesn't like it much either so apart from a 20 min ball run we are snuggled up in the house today.

Awww sounds like she did you proud Grin.

I pick and choose threads because online can be very brutal especially with keyboard warriors. I try and think whether I would say something face to face where I wasn't anonymous before I post but not everyone is like that.

Wolfiefan · 15/03/2018 07:22

Yep I'm who I am in RL on here. I type what I would say.
Honestly I don't think I could have been prouder if she won best in show! Haha.

BiteyShark · 15/03/2018 07:28

I'm tonight and am leaving DH in charge of BiteyDog. I am hoping I might get a bouncy wiggly greeting (from the dog not DH Wink) that everyone gets except me as he never gets to miss me as much Grin

BiteyShark · 15/03/2018 07:28

That should say I am out tonight

Hope all dogs and humans are healthy! We’re back to the neurologist today to find out if the treatment is working. He’s definitely feeling much better but I don’t know if that’s due to the antibiotics or the shedloads of painkillers he’s on.

I can’t believe we’ve got to the end of two weeks with no walking at all ... this is a dog who normally has two walks a day without fail, about two and a half hours in total, with lots of free running and almost daily swimming and he still has plenty of energy... dh and I have really missed walking him too so I’m keeping everything crossed we can get back to gentle exercise soon

BiteyShark · 15/03/2018 08:11

noitsnotteatimeyet fingers crossed they are pleased with his progress and start to allow you a bit of freedom.

Madam is trying to catch rain drops that are rolling down outside the window Grin

Bless her. She needs walking but I can't do it till later. Dd is poorly so don't want to drag her out in the rain

BiteyShark · 15/03/2018 11:29

Soubriquet at least the rain is keeping her entertained 😁

noitsnotteatimeyet · 15/03/2018 12:34

Yay - the neurologist is really pleased with his progress. All the clinical signs are good, the muscle wastage in his back legs has been reversed, he’s no longer wobbly when he turns and he demonstrated his ability to jump pain-free when there was a bit of dried liver in the offing. We’re phasing out the painkillers and he’s on antibiotics for another month. Lead walks for two weeks then gradually back to normal exercise levels and we’re back at the specialists in six weeks for a (hopefully) final checkup unless he starts showing signs of being in pain again.

I’m feeling enormously relieved and teatimetoller is having a celebratory trachea Envy < not envy Grin

BiteyShark · 15/03/2018 12:49

Good news noitsnotteatimeyet and yuk for the trachea although I suspect it tastes yummy to teatimetoller.

Talking of yummy my poor dog walker had to wrestle a rotting deers head from BiteyDog today [boak] Shock

OP posts:
thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 15/03/2018 15:23

That’s such good news, noitsnotteatimeyet.
Well done at Crufts wolfiedog!
I am feeling particularly proud of my mobile hearthrug today. We did an on lead offlead walk around the village today. She sat at every kerb without being asked, recalled away from a dog barking hysterically at her in its garden which runs alongside a footpath with only one defiant shout back. Came unexpectedly upon another dog who we know isn’t keen on greetings and she avoided her completely. We met an acquaintance who I chatted to for a good five mins and realised that cocodog was sitting quietly by my side instead of jumping up for attention. Got straight into her bed when we got home instead of skulking in the garden until I call her in and tell her to settle down. Perhaps the real coco will be back tomorrow😬

BiteyShark · 16/03/2018 11:27

Good Cocodog Grin.

Mine is driving me potty at the moment, he is doing the 'feed me death stare' Hmm

OP posts:
thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 16/03/2018 13:46

Poor biteydog, can he have a raw carrot? I gave Coco one yesterday and she chewed it and spat bits out all over the floor so I chucked the rest of it out in the garden whereupon she has buried it like a bone😬
Walk again was approaching perfection this morning but then she let herself down big time. Poor bloke working in the apple orchard where we were walking got jumped on excitedly by hairy monster who refused recall and then tried to nick his elevenses, I was very apologetic and embarrassed. 🙁

BiteyShark · 16/03/2018 13:48

He's had a dentastix and a carrot. He is just pretending that he is being starved Angry.

Well last nights behaviour is what I had expected with the steroids. He sat and barked at nothing in the kitchen, the corridor, our bedroom then even when we shut the doors was scratching to go out. Basically agitated and wouldn't sleep. This started in the afternoon and went on for hours into the night until I think he finally gave into exhaustion and curled up on his bed and we heard nothing from him until I woke him for his pee this morning. It was exhausting just watching him Grin and thank god our house is detached so we didn't need to worry about the barking.

Uh weather warnings again so looks like a wet, snowy muddy weekend Sad. Stamps foot 'I want spring'

OP posts:
Squirrel26 · 17/03/2018 07:30

I am so unimpressed with the weather forecast. I just want the mud to stop! Currently waiting to go out for a walk with friend and her Sprocker. We have to wait because she has someone coming round to quote for doing their garden with artificial grass Grin

BiteyShark · 17/03/2018 07:33

I am hoping to get our artificial grass next week (assuming the weather doesn't stop them). I can't wait, just to be able to take him into the garden to play a bit of ball (just 10 minutes tires him out completely as I bounce it off the walls and he loves the whole 'where is it going to land'.

OP posts:
thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 17/03/2018 08:22

Also fed up with weather, our garden is huge so hasn’t suffered too much tearing up by cocodog but is littered with sticks and twigs she pulls off the bonfire when DH isn’t looking. He has been pruning hedges and trees and has his little helper😏 He is in the doghouse today though, left the side gate open yesterday evening and dog escaped through it at about 7 pm in the dark. Luckily our nearest neighbour driving past our house spotted her trotting merrily along the road to the woods and alerted us blowing her horn frantically. My heart stopped. She had just had her nightly brush and wasnt wearing her collar either.

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 17/03/2018 08:27

Bitey, you must have a lot of patience...I know it is not his fault but barking is the thing I have zero tolerance for and would find hard. Is the dose due to be lowered soon?

BiteyShark · 17/03/2018 08:31

So lucky that your neighbours spotted her bid for freedom. Phew!

OP posts:
Squirrel26 · 17/03/2018 08:36

Oh God, escaped dog in the dark Shock

I hate the unsettled/scratching/barking thing. SquirrelDog does it (he has no excuse, the little git) and I find it really really stressful - it is NOT what I want when I’m trying to relax in the evening!

BiteyShark · 17/03/2018 08:36

It was hard hearing him barking continuously last night but it does help that I know it's the drugs and it's (hopefully) temporary. It rattled DH more as he had to keep turning the tv volume up Grin

I run out of this lot next week and have to phone the vet on Monday to discuss the next steps. It's dangerous to stop themsuddenly now he's had a period on them so I am expecting many weeks of tapering the dosage down. He's also lost another 0.5 kg of weight so looking at introducing a third smaller lunch as I can see his ribs again Sad

OP posts:
thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 17/03/2018 13:56

Biteydog will love you for some extra lunch and may reduce the death stares😃 I thought steroids put weight on not lose it.
Squirrel, have you tried giving him a chew or a Kong in the evening to get him into the habit of relaxing?
We have decided to close the front gates after our afternoon walk, bit of a pain but extra gate insurance for when DH having a senior moment.😬

BiteyShark · 17/03/2018 14:51

I know I was expecting weight gain (which would be a blessing for BiteyDog) so maybe he's just been bouncing about more to lose it or a delayed reaction from his last bout of D&V that started this all off again. Maybe the weight gain will be later. As he's a skinny thing it doesn't take much to make his ribs show. He loved his extra cooked cod fillet with a sprinkling of kibble this lunchtime. DH who cooked it for him seems to be having lots of extra cuddles this afternoon Envy.

Don't blame you for the extra gate insurance. It must have been horrible to think of 'what ifs' and they will exploit anything they see in their bid for freedom (it's a shame they don't understand it isn't safe Sad). Is your DH suitably in the doghouse still Grin?

We had a good session at agility today but boy was it bloody cold.

Shock eek to escaped dog in the dark - you must have been so relieved cocodog was ok despite her adventure

We’ve had a breakthrough here - teatimetoller jumped up onto the sofa for a cuddle for the first time in weeks - he’s definitely feeling much better Smile
