General dog chat

Anyone fancy a general dog chat thread?

BiteyDog is now almost 15 months old and it's about time we ditched the puppy survival thread for general chit chat but it's still nice to chat about our doggie dilemmas and days so if anyone wants to join me in wittering on saves BiteyDog having the listen to my incessant talking at him then welcome aboard.

How's all the dogs coping with the snow in the northern parts? I am sick of the rain and I guess fortunate enough that BiteyDog doesn't like it much either so apart from a 20 min ball run we are snuggled up in the house today.

We had about three days in her season when our girl would have literally done anything to get at the boys. She was a nightmare. I was VERY glad of the dogmatic! Grin

BiteyShark · 06/03/2018 18:15

So glad I have a boy dog 😁

Wolfie, they truly do turn into little hussies don't they... Hoping those "magic moments" fall on next week when we are home, probably yes as I just noticed the bleeding this morning - can't be totally sure though since they are just a few little drops unlike the golden who has always been very messy.

Wolfiefan · 06/03/2018 18:36

Her first season was very messy. She kept herself much cleaner the second time. Day 10-13 she would have done anything to get to a boy. We nearly had a wolfador and she made a gorgeous scruffy lurcher type growl at her. I don't she was leaping about on the lead and trying to get to him. He was really rather worried by her. Women are scary! Grin
Boys? I know a couple of boy dogs who are total sex pests! Grin

Soubriquet · 06/03/2018 19:07

My weirdo of a dog kept herself spotless both times...apart from at night whilst she was sleeping. Poor girl leaked all over my bed

And had NO interest in other dogs at all. I was surprised as my dog aggressive poodle cross used to turn into a right hussy when she was in season

Soubriquet · 06/03/2018 19:10

I used to love this story my grandad told me

He used to have a couple of dogs. One male, one female.

When the female came into season, he put a pair of my mums knickers on her, shut her in the living room and the boy in the kitchen for the night they were sleeping.

They came down in the morning with the female having the knickers around her legs and the boy wagging his tail with the biggest grin ever Grin

Wolfiefan · 06/03/2018 19:14
Grin I tried a pair of boxers on madam!

Bitey, glad you have a diagnosis. Is that steroids for life or just when there is a flare up?

BiteyShark · 06/03/2018 23:17

thegirlsallgrowedupnow not sure at the moment. We have a high dosage for the first two weeks (apparently I should expect him to be thirsty, hungry and peeing more during that time) then they will lower it.
They said some dogs need a maintenance dose forever but for other dogs they can stop it after a certain period of time. Not sure what they plan for BiteyDog as I have to get the tablets and then go back in a couple of weeks so they can see how he has responded during that time. I don't mind if they did it for a period of time and then stopped because at least now if he has an episode they would know to give steroids immediately rather than the usual advice of probiotic, diets etc.

I feel really sorry for him as well because whilst he's had his really bad periods we have been battling with his stomach for as long as I can remember. He must have been feeling rough all this time Sad

Yes, dogs are so stoic in the face of discomfort unless it’s something obvious like a hurt paw or a bramble attached to fur ( coco gets very upset at brambles in her fur). I noticed a change in her demeanour though after sorting out her stomach infection recently. Calmer and happier, very subtle but noticeable. Hope biteydog responds well to the steroids💐

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 07/03/2018 07:37

At least you have a diagnosis Bitey. That's the first stage of getting it sorted for him long term.

PestDog did very well at his first night of dog boarding. Apparently he didn't even try his usual trick of lunging at motorbikes...! Great walking in a pack, and even consented to sleeping in his own bed. Got a bit shouty when he buried a treat in the sofa and another dog discovered it and tried to wander off with it, but that's really dogs being dogs. He's even welcome back later this week - good job too, as I'm off on a business trip and would have had major issues if he hadn't been!

I'm VERY proud of him. No way could his reactive little face have dealt with this 6 months ago.

BiteyShark · 07/03/2018 07:38

Laughing at the brambles in furGrin. BiteyDog sometimes gets them in his tail and he goes crazy running about and he won't stand still long enough to allow me to untangle him.

Will be interesting to see how he is when treated as he does sleep a lot for a working dog so maybe he will be more active not looking forward to that Wink

BiteyShark · 07/03/2018 07:39

Avocados so glad PestDog likes his boarding as it's such a weight of your mind not having to worry about him being there.

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 08/03/2018 06:56

Bitey, I have a friend with a working cocker who is very active on his walks far more so than coco. He sleeps in the day a lot more than coco too. She seems happiest on about an hours ramble in the morning and half hour potter through the woods in the late afternoon but needs short bits of play and training to keep the poodle brain content. I never had a routine with previous dogs but stick to a broad one with her so that she recognises that it is time to rest. She doesn’t sleep very much at all during the day but doesn’t pester or follow me around too much thank goodness.
Well done Pestdog at the boarders.

BiteyShark · 08/03/2018 07:07

Your friends dog sounds very similar then so maybe it's just what they do regarding sleeping unless running about chasing balls and birds and sticking his head down rabbit holes As long as he's had 30 mins of chasing a ball at full speed non stop he seems happy to then chill on the sofa for several hours after.

He's had his first dose of steroids and I must move away from google as the side effects for high doses is making me nervous even though my head knows that they have to list every possible side effect.

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 08/03/2018 07:16

Step away from google🙃
Anyone going to watch Crufts on TV this afternoon, cocodog has never shown much interest in tv but I thought we might curl up together and watch it. Perils of being self employed cos I really should be working!

BiteyShark · 08/03/2018 07:27

I was hoping to catch the highlights but won't be able to watch it live Sad

@Wolfiefan let us know how you get on. Rooting for Wolfiedog

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 08/03/2018 07:38

Totally step away from the Google. Having had a child on stupidly high doses of steroids as a toddler I get it. All fine now. You're doing the right thing for him. Hope the steroids kick in soon.
Re Crufts. If we get there safely, find our way round, she goes round the ring ok and lets the judge go over her then I will be thrilled. Not expecting to come home with any ribbons. (Unless I buy them! Grin)
I may be in serious need of gin by tomorrow night!!

BiteyShark · 08/03/2018 07:43

Awww it will be fab I am sure. Although when I went round a couple of years ago I remember they had these cubicles for the competing dogs to rest in if I remember correctly. Not sure whether they will be big enough for WolfieDog unless they have a hound section or she can curl up in a small ball Grin

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 08/03/2018 12:36

Good luck Wolfie!

Soubriquet · 08/03/2018 13:09

Good luck!!!

I was supposed to go again this year...good job I'm not. I've been on bed rest since Sunday with severe back spasms.

BiteyShark · 08/03/2018 13:53

Soubriquet hope you feel better soon.

OP posts:
thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 08/03/2018 15:12

Good luck Wolfie. DH has arrived home from work and banned me from watching Crufts until this evening on the premise that I am nowhere near where I should be with my orders for Mothering Sunday, boo.

Squirrel26 · 08/03/2018 20:37

Good luck Wolfie, I'm going to watch the highlights later this evening. I doubt SquirrelDog will be interested as he's too busy doing important looking out of the window Hmm

Fingers crossed for BiteyDog feeling better after his steroids. And well done PestDog! It's such a relief knowing that there's somewhere they can go if they get especially unbearable in an emergency.
