Anyone fancy a general dog chat thread?

BiteyDog is now almost 15 months old and it's about time we ditched the puppy survival thread for general chit chat but it's still nice to chat about our doggie dilemmas and days so if anyone wants to join me in wittering on saves BiteyDog having the listen to my incessant talking at him then welcome aboard.

How's all the dogs coping with the snow in the northern parts? I am sick of the rain and I guess fortunate enough that BiteyDog doesn't like it much either so apart from a 20 min ball run we are snuggled up in the house today.

I arrived home today and SquirrelDog came to the door, looked out at the snow and rapidly reversed (and peed on the footstool while I was upstairs getting changed Angry ) I made him go out for half an hour or so, but he was deeply unimpressed!

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 02/03/2018 06:21

I have just woken up to the delightful sound of PestDog wretching and vomiting over my duvet EnvyEnvy

He isn't a vomity dog and there's no obvious reason for it Confused Hopefully just a one off.

BiteyShark · 02/03/2018 06:43

Poor PestDog, hope he gets better soon Sad

Squirrel26 I had to shove BiteyDog out to force him to pee again this morning but he was obviously holding in a poo as the snow has turned to ice and he couldn't walk in it. DH had to go out to make him a small area to stand on so he could have a poo Shock

My lovely non-vomity girl also threw up last night with no obvious reason ... but had also not had a poo on either walk in the snow. So we’re wondering if it’s connected and about to clear a pathway in the garden. The things we do!

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 02/03/2018 07:54

We have a big garden and fenced off a small bit when coco was a pup, she accesses it by whizzing over the patio, through a hole cut in the beech hedge and out into her own peeing domain. It has become a habit for morning and last thing at night wees. Snow is a foot deep here now and her face was a picture. Cue DH and I both at 7am with shovels, him clearing a path along the patio, me clambering over fencing to get into her garden to clear a patch for her to perform.

BiteyShark · 02/03/2018 08:05

It shows how much we love our furry monsters Grin. For no one else would I be out in this weather clearing a small area for them to poo on Blush

For the first time ever cocodog is showing zero interest in going out for a walk. Yesterday’s sprinkling was huge fun but chest deep is seriously out of the question. Could be a long day of tuggy and hide and seek😕

steppemum · 02/03/2018 10:11

yesterday I was poo picking in our garden in the freezing wind.
he doesn't do many in the garden, but as he tends to poo - step - poo - step as he does it, it is spread out
Suddenly realised that if we had snow and kids went out the poo would be hiding underneath - yuck, so went and cleaned it all up. Not a job I was expecting to do in minus10!

As to walks, steppedog loves being outside, in fact we let him out for a wee and he won't come back in, having too much fun in the garden.
So we go and walk, where-ever we can he runs and runs and seems to stay warm. No coat. I think the only time he has been cold on a walk was when we got soaked and he was head and tail down, heading for home and shivering. Sad (mind you I was too)

Soubriquet · 02/03/2018 10:40

I think I might be able to coax madam for a walk today. She's been doing mad zoomies around the garden so I think the no walking has gotten to her and she would rather walk in the snow than not

Will try when someone gets home just after 12..not dragging two kids out in this

BiteyShark · 02/03/2018 11:08

Just been out in the forest. The problem was that ice has formed on top of the snow and by the time we was half way round I could see he was struggling so had to carry him for a bit. When I got home where his legs had been shaved for his op it looks like the ice has cut them slightly so now he has his inflatable buster collar on to stop him licking the cut 😢.

Poor BiteyDog Sad I’ve seen photos of dogs with little boots on for walking in the snow, but whether it’s worth it in this country I don’t know. I suppose it might protect them from the grit though - I am paranoid about SquirrelDog licking antifreeze off his paws.

I was too scared to drive in to the garden centre car park last night, so he got chicken, oats and milk for breakfast. I’m hoping he will survive until I can get him some more special fancy grain free ‘biologically appropriate’ kibble Smile

BiteyShark · 02/03/2018 12:17

I tried some of them when he cut his paw but couldn't get them on him as he took one look and said 'no way' Angry.

The shaved bit is right up his leg so they wouldn't have helped today as he broke through the ice and fell into a foot of snow. Seems the buster collar stopped the licking so it's now off and he's sleeping Grin. Wish I could join him but having to work Sad

Cocodog was up for a walk just later than usual.
The ice on top of the snow was challenging to walk on. Luckily a few tractors have been out and about and left compacted tracks for us to walk on, the woods weren’t too bad either, more powdery. We even met our new next door neighbours dog so with the deep snow and a pal to bounce around with she has returned to her basket happy and tired.

Soubriquet · 02/03/2018 12:52

We got out!

I think she put up with it because she was desperate for a walk but I don't think she's keen at all

She did a good bambi impression though. Went racing through some icy snow, tried to stop, slipped and her back legs went from under her. I didn't laugh..much Grin

We managed to get out for a walk yesterday afternoon. The snow isn't that heavy here it's mainly just the biting wind. Dog was absolutely thrilled. She loves the cold weather and was running and bouncing as if she hadn't been out for a week instead of missing one day.

Will try again this afternoon, but we've got a mixture of snow and rain here and rain is definitely not her friend.

Floralnomad · 02/03/2018 14:50

We’ve not gone out for a walk today as the pavements are the worst they’ve been all week it’s literally sheet ice .

Squirrel26 · 02/03/2018 20:40

I bought SquirrelDog a ridiculously expensive coat this afternoon. Here he is doing his best ‘I look good and I know it, but I’m still bloody hating this godawful white stuff’ pose. Grin

PestDog appears none the worse for this morning's vomiting, though the same cannot be said for my duvet. Good job too - his insurance doesn't kick in for another week so he's not allowed to be ill!

I'm not telling him dog boots exist. He might start getting ideas above his station Hmm

PestDog's previous owner (for those of you who have been following the thread for a while) is finally moving out tomorrow. Nice guy, situation not of his making (PestDog was previously dumped on him without warning or consultation), just not at the right point in his life to have a dog, especially not a challenging high energy one with zero prior training. I've bought him a new collar and lead to celebrate the first day of the rest of his life Grin

He's got to go to the dog boarder for the first time ever for two non consecutive nights this week so I'm going to feel like a bad dog mum. He's going to have to get used to his dad disappearing, a new flatmate, me moving bedrooms and a new dog boarder all in about 3 days but I don't have any alternative Sad

BiteyShark · 03/03/2018 05:57

Loving the pics of dogs in their coats Grin BiteyDog wont walk in one Sad

Avocados be prepared for PestDog to be a bit unsettled after going to the dog boarders. Mine absolutely loves going as it's where he goes to daycare and gets to play all day but he still is unsettled when he returns home and takes a good couple of days to get back to his usual self.

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 03/03/2018 07:41

None of my previous dogs have had coats and this one is only going to be used when temps are below zero and wet, ie lashing rain or snow mainly to keep cocodog drier. She takes so long to dry out. I don’t think she needs a coat like some dogs do although she seemed pretty happy in it yesterday😁
All change for Pestdog! I’m sure he will be fine as long as his some of his routines are followed. He should be fine changing bedrooms because he will be with you, if not your new flat mate will get a lovely hot water bottle😀 Don’t mention the vomiting😬Hopefully he has met his new home boarder?

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 03/03/2018 07:43

Forgot to say Squirreldog does look v handsome in his coat. What breed is he?

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 03/03/2018 08:05

He's met her before as she runs the training classes he used to go to, but he's not bonded with her - he's one of these dogs that's either bonded with you (ecstatic to see you) or he hasn't (totally ignores you), no inbetween. We're going around for a cup of tea this weekend so he can see the location and then leave again, and I'll send him off with a couple of balls which is the thing he really bonds with someone over.

The two nights are three nights apart (business trips) so he'll have to get over it before he's back there again! Hopefully he'll be good there - he's a tendency to act up in training classes and has some reactivity issues which the boarder is well aware of.

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 03/03/2018 09:28

I wish cocodog would be a bit more restrained in her human relationships. Everybody gets the ecstatic welcome regardless. I am having some success in getting my mum, who isn’t keen on dogs, to ignore her and Coco is gradually getting the hint. But I have to work quite hard when we are out and about to keep her focussed on me and stop her flinging herself joyfully on total strangers.
