My Ddog has been attacked.

Again.

Farmer’s dog. We are neighbours. We were on a footpath, our dogs on leads, minding our own business. My dog is 11 and was walking with my DS, also 11.
Farmers dog (off lead despite history of attacks on runners, other dogs) suddenly comes from nowhere. DS dropped the lead so our old boy could run (he’s still fast in bursts, ex racer). Ddog has 3 puncture wounds to his lower back and a 3 inch chunk out of his tail.
Took him to emergency vet as I couldn’t stem the bleeding at home and they discovered the back wounds all met in the middle and were down to his hip bones.
Luckily we’re insured but I had to pay up £680 last night (emergency vet) and he needs further work at our vet on Tuesday.
These are the wealthiest farming family in the area. Think multi million pound farmhouse. Massive cars. He’s off skiing soon apparently. I’m off round there later today with the itemised bill to ask them to pay the excess on our insurance. He’s never done it before for anyone else- bracing for a polite argument.
To emphasise: my dog did nothing wrong and was running away!

Some people behave like nouveau riche and are crass and tight arse arseholes when in fact they are inthe wrong and they can afford to pay.

midsummabreak · 31/12/2017 09:22

Good luck You are right to ploitely stand your ground

midsummabreak · 31/12/2017 09:22

Politely

Coloursthatweremyjoy · 31/12/2017 09:23

Oh my gosh OP that's horrendous. Flowers I'm so sorry for your poor dog.

Have you informed the police...I only learned on here yesterday that they won't to anything about a dog on dog attack but surely if this dog has attacked runners before and is loose they need to know.

This may get me flamed but in future I'd be walking my dog carrying a walking stick!

Hope your dog recovers well, thank God for insurance.

Battleax · 31/12/2017 09:24

I'd save my blood pressure and go the small claims route TBH.

Battleax · 31/12/2017 09:26

This may get me flamed but in future I'd be walking my dog carrying a walking stick!

I object to that more as a walking stick user than I do as a dog lover. We could really do without mobility aids getting that reputation. What's wrong with a large stick branch for "fetch"?

rightsaidfrederickII · 31/12/2017 09:26

Poor DDog

I'd be speaking to the police and dog warden. At the very least it well help to build up a picture of this dog's behaviour.

BiteyShark · 31/12/2017 09:43

Report but also pass on the details to the insurance company as they may have more luck getting them to pay up for their costs.

CrestedTit · 31/12/2017 09:51

No advice other than stay calm and good luck!

OneOfTheGrundys · 31/12/2017 09:58

Thank you lovely doghouse.
DH is away for work and it’s such a relief to communicate with others who get it.

I will report this time, despite this family’s reputation as bullies. A lady up the lane complained to them once about the behaviour of some of the drivers and ended up with a 5 foot round hay bale blocking her gate that mysteriously appeared one night.

When our dog was attacked I claimed the vets bill from Petplan and THEY went after the other dogs owner so I didn’t need to get directly involved

missyB1 · 31/12/2017 10:24

Personally I would also consider warning others on social media about this dog and it’s irresponsible owner. I’ve seen a few posts on our local FB groups about this sort of thing, often including pictures.

So sorry this has happened I cannot imagine how upsetting it must be Flowers

OneOfTheGrundys · 31/12/2017 10:27

Yes, the vet did say yesterday that our insurance may pursue the owners.
I’m just sick of this dog’s behaviour. I realise it’s the farmers fault not the dogs but he has to manage it better. It may be a soft as butter family pet at home but it has to be better controlled if it does this to other loved pets. At my dogs age this could have killed him.

Or hurt my DS/me in the moment of attack. Or gone for a runner!

BuzzKillington · 31/12/2017 10:31

Aside from financial issue - please report to the police and the dog warden.

My dog was attacked recently and I really wish I had reported it.

hahahaIdontgetit · 31/12/2017 10:43

I know how difficult it is to report someone when you know they may be consequences. We had a heap of rubble and branches dumped on our shared road when one of my neighbours complained about the local farmer.

However the dog is dangerous and should be reported.

OneOfTheGrundys · 31/12/2017 13:16

Went round there. The mother (who was with the dog at the time) denied at first that their dog had made contact. I showed them the evidence that he had along with the bill from the emergency vet and she eventually conceded that she’d pass it on to her son. I have asked them to pay the claim excess for this and any further treatment resulting from the attack.

Oh my goodness that injury looks awful! Sad

GlitteryFluff · 31/12/2017 13:36

Your poor dog Flowers

OneOfTheGrundys · 31/12/2017 13:36

That’s it stitched up too.

How they could deny any involvement is beyond me. It’s clear from the location of the wounds my old boy was running away!

Thank you so much for your kind messages. My dog owning friends are away and so is DH and it’s lovely to hear from people who understand. ✊🏻Mumsnet.

mullmepopcorn · 31/12/2017 13:41

Poor baby! My on lead old boy was attached by an Akita. He really aged, I'm afraid.

MarcoPoloCX · 31/12/2017 14:27

What a bloody bitch denying it.

I would invest in a body cam and film your walks if this is likely to happen and tell that bitch there will be evidence from now on.

If you had gone to the police she would have denied it.

I wear a body cam now if I walk very early in the morning as there's an owner on the neighbouring street who cannot control her dogs and had denied attack to the police when I reported her previously.

I'd report them.

MarcoPoloCX · 31/12/2017 14:31

When there's no evidence or witnesses some people will deny everything...
Now you know what she's like.
I'd be very careful in the future.

BiteyShark · 31/12/2017 14:37

Oh your poor dog Flowers
