How much excercise do your dogs get and what breeds are they?

When you look for online information the exercise requirements for dog breeds varies so hugely I thought it would be interesting to see what breeds get what in reality.
I have a border terrier and a working cocker spaniel, they get about 2 -3 hours walks 4 days a week and about an hour on the other 3. Very happy content dogs who just chill the rest of the time.
I am particularly interested in bigger dogs (pointers, dalmations, vizslas type dogs)

Sheltie, usually two walks a day, about 30-40 minutes each. Only small though - loves to lie in the sun and play on the beach.

Working cocker spaniel who goes to day care three times a week so gets 2 hours of walks a day then. Other days he's happy with 20-30 mins of constantly chasing a ball and then around 20-30 mins of training. Far less exercise than it says online but then the gun dog trainers recommend hunting and retrieving over traditional walks.

elQuintoConyo · 27/12/2017 10:15

Medium sized sighthound/nutter/Heinz. She gets 1 hour in the morning, one hour + in the afternoon. Sometimes we are walking with her, sometimes we are on our bikes so she'll be running further. Then a walk round the neighbourhood at about 9pm for her late night ablutions. She has free range of the garden, too. Mostly spending it on TOP of the doghouse chewing pinecones in the sun!

elQuintoConyo · 27/12/2017 10:17

Alice, medium sized. Part Portugese Podengo, part sausage. Loves digging and chasing bunnies.

CMOTDibbler · 27/12/2017 10:19

2 lurchers. 20 mins off lead running / ball chasing, 45 minute on lead running with me or walking.
They'd be happy with 2 off lead sessions a day, and if the weather is inclement, they don't want to go out at all and would still be very calm round the house

Medeci · 27/12/2017 10:19

GSD and labrador - in winter they get one walk a day of 1.5 - 2hrs, off lead mostly in woods and along the river and they usually come back muddy and wet through (so do I Smile) it takes another hour or so cleaning mud off walls and floor, washing dogs etc.

In summer much easier, and they usually go out twice a day.

Praisebe · 27/12/2017 10:23

Greyhound he gets walked every other day and sleeps loads he doesn't like a lot of walks apart from in the spring/summer time

Hoppinggreen · 27/12/2017 10:25

Goldie
30 minutes in the morning
45 minutes early afternoon
30 minutes about 6
15 minutes at 9
This is week days, weekends tend to be longer walks but less frequent

Praisebe · 27/12/2017 10:25

He goes for about 2hrs when he does go for a walk he just runs laps round the fields then has a nice mooch about the woods

hellsbells99 · 27/12/2017 10:28

GSDs - 4 walks on fields off lead. Each walk 25-30 mins. Plus occasional walks on lead but longer.

ToothTrauma · 27/12/2017 10:31

Lab here. Big park run with various doggie friends in the morning. Walks to and from park too.

Evenings gets a long lead walk with off-lead portions to run.

Plays in garden/with us if he feels like it during the day.

He doesn’t like rain though so sometimes he refuses to go out, the big girl’s blouse Wink

SkeletonSkins · 27/12/2017 10:31

I'm with Bitey in that mental stimulation is more valuable to us. I have a Border Collie and a Terrier x, and they get about an hour a day which includes getting the ball etc and playing 'find it' in the long grass.

The collie is an old boy now so that does him really. They both play games at home too eg find it, treat balls, putting a treat underneath one upturned pot amongst a group, making little packets out of toilet rolls and dog has to find the one with the treat in. Younger dog gets approx 30 mins training per day. Once a week he does 2 hours of agility, once per week an hour of obedience.

And about once a week we do a longer walk with friends dogs, maybe 2 hours.

But daily they only really get one walk and this works for them fine.

ditavonteesed · 27/12/2017 10:40

I agree about the mental stimulation, we have to not take a ball or toy out for the spaniel as if he has one he becomes so one track minded that he doesnlt go exploring/sniffing. He gets probably another half an hour of ball chasing and games in the park 2 or 3 times a week.

Eric is a shih tzu/miniature poodle cross. He gets 90 minutes in a morning and evening and twenty minutes around the block before bed every day. Sometimes he goes for longer and occasionally he gets an extra walk when one of us wants to get out but he is up for a walk at any time.
Eric's walks are a mix of on lead and off lead and chasing round with a ball or with his doggy friends.

rightsaidfrederickII · 27/12/2017 10:58

Jack Russell cross, approx 18 months

1 x short walk first thing in the morning, just around the block.
1 x long walk straight after work
1 x short walk last thing at night

The long walk is either 45 mins of non stop fetch, or as much sniffing, walking and playing with dogs as possible - on the weekends he will happily walk for 4 hours and still be going (but crash as soon as we get home!). He does need to be walked to the point of exhaustion daily, else he becomes a complete pain in the arse by the second day.

WhenEnoughIsEnough · 27/12/2017 11:04

Rottweiler here- he gets about an hour of running around a field with his dog friends with lots of ball games and such like and then in the evenings he gets about a 3 mile walk during the week. At weekends we usually walk him about 5 miles as we all go out as a family walking down bridleways and places like that. He also gets plenty of play time at home as the kids are ways playing with him.

y0rkier0se · 27/12/2017 11:09

2 whippets. In summer they’re walked every day for about 40 mins after work, 1-3 hours on a Saturday and Sunday. In winter they look like Hmm if you try and walk them. They get 4ish hours on a Sunday as we always have the day out with them, but after work it’s dark and they won’t walk. My kind of dog Grin

y0rkier0se · 27/12/2017 11:11

This is there typical winter position

villainousbroodmare · 27/12/2017 11:15

60-90 min walking and running off lead every morning. Out and about with DH all day so will get at least another 45 min here and there. Another Irish setter.

BarchesterFlowers · 27/12/2017 11:16

Labrador, plenty of outdoor time, we have always had a big safe enclosed garden used to be ball/frisbee mad but now loses interest after five mins.

Usually just one walk a day of anywhere between two and five miles. Was two walks a day until last year and as a young dog she would walk miles and miles with me on my horse.

Aged 13.

GreyMorning · 27/12/2017 11:17

We have a Border Terrier too and he is happy to walk for miles and miles every day or lay on the sofa for a week.

As long as he has company he's chilled out (but he was left when I worked full time so he's also fine on his own)

He's the perfect dog*

*i very much have a mother's rose tinted glasses view of the rest of the dog's behaviour

MsGameandWatching · 27/12/2017 11:18

1 x 15 minutes in the morning, one hour in the afternoon, five minutes last thing at night.

He’s a Scottie - very short legs and stocky so not particularly swift. It’s enough for him, he’s calm and seems happy on that amount of walk time.

Soubriquet · 27/12/2017 11:20

Anywhere between 30-60 minutes with a good game of chase. I don't stop till she's panting from running too much. That guarantees a crash when she gets home.

Chihuahua

TwinkleTipsInTheSky · 27/12/2017 11:25

2 miniature Dachshunds.... 1.5 ~ 2 hours a day, everyday.
On weekends, they go for much longer (about 3.5 ~ 4 hrs) and love it. Despite their short legs, they're hardy little dogs.
