How much excercise do your dogs get and what breeds are they?

When you look for online information the exercise requirements for dog breeds varies so hugely I thought it would be interesting to see what breeds get what in reality.
I have a border terrier and a working cocker spaniel, they get about 2 -3 hours walks 4 days a week and about an hour on the other 3. Very happy content dogs who just chill the rest of the time.
I am particularly interested in bigger dogs (pointers, dalmations, vizslas type dogs)

JRT that is happy to walk for hours days on end or not go out for walks at all for days on end... she's very easy!!

usainbolt · 27/12/2017 12:16

W have lots of collies and we have an 1.5 - 2 hours walk but loads of mental stimulation. All meals are worked for.T hey do sheep work, agility, trick training and scent work fitness work, hydro etc on top of their walk. For our dogs a walk is a time to chill, sniff and be a dog.

I agree that mental stimulation is extremely important - certainly for collies

Babyroobs · 27/12/2017 14:55

I'm not sure whether mine are getting enough exercise. It's variable but as I have a bad back at the moment I'm struggling to walk them together so do separate walks generally 2 x 30 mins each a day . I think my 5 month old cocker puppy would benefit for more and does get more on the days dh is off work.

I have a 4 year old retired racing greyhound who doesn't like the cold wet weather! We do however manage three 30 minute walks per day on school days and on a weekend a short morning walk followed by a longer walk later in the day. He can't be let off the lead so we go out in the garden a couple of times a day for a zoom around, he's not one for fetching balls but he has an old sock he like to fling around.

Ruffian · 27/12/2017 17:02

9 year-old JRT - most days gets 1.5 to 2 hour walk morning, 45 min afternoon and 30 min around 9 pm.

When he's in the house he just snoozes so I would like to find more stimulation for him in the house. He's got toys but he only plays with them if I throw them and I haven't got time with all that walking as well!

wheelwarrior · 27/12/2017 17:20

Labrador quiet day two walks one a hour and another 90 mins

But normally 3 walks one being 45 mins others from 90 mins to two hours each walk sometimes more

Plus obediance class 60 mins twice a week

He is a pretty chilled dog to be fair it is more that I enjoy being out and about

sweetkitty · 27/12/2017 17:29

Rhodesian Ridgeback gets 1.5 hours a day off lead chasing imaginary furry things through trees unless it's raining then she refuses to go out.

noitsnotteatimeyet · 27/12/2017 19:33

4 year-old Toller - usually gets an hour and a half in the morning, all off lead and including lots of swimming/charging through the woods/chasing balls. In the evenings he gets 45 minutes to an hour with about 20 minutes of that on lead. Plus bits of training throughout the day.

He’s usually very chilled at home and if we occasionally need to miss his evening walk for any reason he’s fine. Today the weather is foul here - he went out for a long romp with a doggy friend this morning and he’s been sparko for the rest of the day (he has found Christmas very tiring though!)

ArtyKitty · 27/12/2017 22:59

3 year old Collie / labradoodle. Work days, it's 45 mins at 7am, an hour at lunch then another 45-60 mins in the evening. Week it's 2-2.5 hrs in the morning then an hour in the afternoon. Except currently she's recovering from a bite wound so I'm trying to match that with games in the house... It's having mixed results..

Borderterriersrock · 27/12/2017 23:13

I’ve got a border terrier and she gets about an hour off lead twice a day. She’s very lazy at home though and isn’t that fussed about going out. Perfect dog.

joystir59 · 28/12/2017 07:16

4yr old JRT. 2 walks per day, morning and afternoon, each has to be at least an hour and include a lot of off lead running about and complex agility/ball play so that his mind is exercised as well. This is a minimum to ensure he is well balanced at home , he can go on much longer walks with ease. We live on a steep headland leading down to the beach so his walks are strenuous

DeepfriedPizza · 28/12/2017 07:20

PizzaPup is a mix of unknown breeds and gets 2-3 hours a day when we’re at home. She gets 4-5 when it’s a dog walker day.sleeps the rest of the time.

Crumbs1 · 28/12/2017 07:27

Dally. Never stops and has indefinite stamina. Lovely, well behaved, affectionate beast if he gets sufficient exercise; twitchy nightmare if he doesn’t. 1/1.5 hours run every morning -about 6/8 miles over downs, so hilly and off lead. He does further as he’s running around in the woods, chasing pheasants etc.
Lunchtime walk is usually two miles round a circular footpath route, off lead.
Early evening it’s either a downland walk or local heath and pond. We take a ball and thrower and he runs for over an hour chasing balls and other dogs.

He happily walks more if children are home to take him.

Cocobananas · 28/12/2017 09:06

OP, we don’t take a ball on our walks either for the same reason, she also gets over possessive of balls but we play in the garden with them as a treat.
My springer/ poodle/labradoodle goes for a different walk each morning on and off lead so fields and lanes or around a local huge apple orchard or country park or sometimes into town to a meadow where there are always lots of other dogs and a quick practice walking nicely on lead through the town each one lasting anywhere between 40 minutes and an hour. She then has 25/30 minutes offlead in our local woods in the afternoon. We do agility once a week , play in our large garden for 10 to 15 minutes at lunchtime and do a bit of training at mealtimes.

toptomatoes · 28/12/2017 09:15

Our Springer spaniel gets a short walk first thing (15 min), then 30 min training and ball play with our 11-year-old, 45-60 min at lunch time -2 days a week is with the dog walker and other dogs, 2 days mostly ball play, 3 days exploring woods with a bit of ball play near the end (these are longer walks on Fridays and at the weekend). Early evening she has another 30-60 mins mostly running in and out of bushes. I work from home so have short play/fuss sessions with her during the day.

GertrudeCB · 28/12/2017 13:34

Labrador here, he gets 2x1-1:5 hours 5 days a week on lead and 1x 2 hours off lead and an hours walk on lead per week in the winter. More off lead in the summer. 30-40 mi s play session/ training every day. Chilled in the house and alert out of it.

JustBeingJobless · 31/12/2017 02:07

10yo border collie x poodle. She’s always been very active, although is slowing down a bit nowadays. We used to walk 5 miles+ every day, but, unfortunately, I’m slowing down a lot due to disability, and cannot manage that anymore. We go onto the local park each morning where we meet friends for an hour or so. We don’t walk much if I’m honest, but she runs and plays with the other dogs. Then we have a slow potter around the block late afternoon. A friend gives her a good walk a couple of times a week, which I’m grateful for.

Threeleggedchair31 · 31/12/2017 02:15

2 Staffs, they get an hour walk once a day or 2x 30 min walks but they're getting old now. When they were younger, I'd take them for a 30 min walk before work and then an hour walk when I got home and another 30 mins before bed! A healthy dog is a happy dog

AlrightBabby · 31/12/2017 02:48

2 DDBs who get at least an hours trot every day unless it's icy as one is scared of ice 🐕🐕

SuperBeagle · 31/12/2017 02:54

Typically, 45-60 minutes per day or around 5-6km. If I have the time, and on weekends, they will get a second shorter walk. At this time of year, a second walk during the year is less common because the Beagle does not cope with walking in the warm weather so we're restricted to early mornings or evenings (it's summer in Australia).

We also live on acreage, so they have the run of that.

Dogs are a 7 year old Beagle and a 7 year old Border Collie.

BumpowderSneezeonAndSnot · 01/01/2018 12:00

Rescue mutt (officially a border collie cross) gets an hour's walk a day but she's quite lazy and often gives us a disdainful look if we dare to suggest walkies!
