Which small breed should we go for

Hi all
Been pondering this for months now with no conclusion
We are looking at getting another dog in a few months and are wanting a small breed
I love Westies but DP wants a French Bulldog but i refuse to have one on principle of the over breeding
We need a breed that can handle a good long walk with our other dog (greyhound) and preferably doesn't moult a lot
Rescue preferably but willing to buy a pup so long as its a reputable breeder

How about another greyhound.

There are so many fab greyhound rescues.

We have a French Bulldog x Boston Terrier and she is like an athletic french Bulldog and has no problem keeping up with our athletic doodle.

Ashamedandblamed · 19/12/2017 14:30

I have a chi x Yorkshire

He is so active he would go out for hours and hours.

Fatjilly · 19/12/2017 14:39

Schnauzer! Doesn't moult, will happily run all day or snooze all day...whatever you're doing, they want to join in. Big enough for rough and tumble yet small enough for snuggles on the sofa. My old boy is the sweetest, kindest, daftest dog ever and he'll hold a full conversation with you, chatting away with various noises.

Which small breed should we go for

Yorkshire terrier or a spaniel maybe? Patterdales and Scottish terriers are fairly small too.

Spoilt ? fekking spa days!!!

We have a westie and she’s great, can walk for hours and hardly any hair comes off her :)

PainSnail · 19/12/2017 17:28

Dachshund! Typical hound and loves a long walk. Big dog in a small body. Mine loves trying to play with greyhounds, I don't think she realises she isn't one...

Praisebe · 19/12/2017 18:41

We're looking to avoid the overbred breeds with health problems so dachshund is a no for us.
We're going to look into westies and terriers though Grin

Most breeds have their own health issues. Westies are very prone to skin issues amongst other things.
Could you cope with terrier attitude?!

Praisebe · 19/12/2017 18:43

Lyn im the type of owner that buys my dog jumpers and he gets bathed and pampered a LOT Grin he loves nothing better than a bubbly bath and a massage while hes in there if i throw a few treats ib2 the water and a squeaky toy he'll lol about for ages before he'll let me haul him out

Border terriers love long walks. Good luck getting them back on the lead once they've spotted a squirrel or an interesting-looking thicket of bushes though Grin

Praisebe · 19/12/2017 18:44

Our greyhound has a massive attitude and is extremely needy even though he just sleeps and farts about for about 15hrs a day so we'll be fine with any attitudesGrin

We have two border terriers! Awesome little dogs. Love long walks and are also great for running and agility if that takes your fancy. Ours have been brilliant with our kids and just want to shower everyone/thing they meet with kisses. I've always had terriers and have so far found borders to be the perfect mix, just enough terrier character without the fireyness of some of the other breeds. Would highly recommend unless you were planning to leave them alone for long periods of time (they really don't like that, mine can do about 3-4 hrs every now ok) or didn't have a secure garden 😊

Whippet.

iloveredwine · 19/12/2017 18:50

miniature schnouzer! my sister got one last year and they are amazing and such a family dog

haveacupoftea · 19/12/2017 18:57

A lot of small dogs will end up with joint problems if over walked so a terrier is a good idea... I think a Jack Russell would be perfect for you

haveacupoftea · 19/12/2017 18:58

Westies are annoying to walk btw because they just stop dead and refuse to go for NO REASON

Merrz · 19/12/2017 19:12

Hi, I am a veterinary nurse so meet lots of different breeds. I'm another vote for the Border Terrier, lovely little dogs (but not too dinky that they need lifted everywhere) and very hardy outside will walk happily for hours. And their double coat means they cope well in cold/wet. Only downside which I think someone has touched on already, they can be very strong willed and are likey to chase any small animal that moves and not likey to come back to you until they decide, although most terriers are similar. Also what about a cockapoo or cocker spaniel, smallish dogs but with the more working dog personality than terrier? But Westies are also good, are prone to skin problems though.

Praisebe · 19/12/2017 21:03

Think a border terrier is the right fit for us then along with a strong harness and an extendable lead Grin

Do border terriers like companions ? We also have a dog loving cat as well as the greyhound so if we did leave it alone for more than 4hrs would it be ok ? Me and DP work opposite shifts that overlap by about 6hrs so the longest the dog is left for currently is 6hrs we also have a dog walker/trainer that comes in a few times a week for walks and training when we don't have time or they just need to see a friendly face
