Which small breed should we go for

Hi all
Been pondering this for months now with no conclusion
We are looking at getting another dog in a few months and are wanting a small breed
I love Westies but DP wants a French Bulldog but i refuse to have one on principle of the over breeding
We need a breed that can handle a good long walk with our other dog (greyhound) and preferably doesn't moult a lot
Rescue preferably but willing to buy a pup so long as its a reputable breeder

Another vote for a Schnauzer, ours is perfect!

Oops4 · 19/12/2017 21:19

Our BTs LOVE our cat and would give anything for her to as much as aknowledge them but she's having none of it! They have grown up with her since being pups (part of the reason we got them as pups) so if you're thinking about a rescue just bear in mind that introducing an adult terrier to a cat can be difficult.

We got our second as a companion for our first, they do like company. If they've had a good walk first ours will happily sleep for a few hours while we're out but we do use a walker/day care if we are going to be out for the day. And incase you need anymore persuasion............

We have a French bulldog. She can’t have long walks and moults everywhere..!

HemanOrSheRa · 19/12/2017 21:27

Ah Oops I have serious dog envy Envy. I love terriers - such bold, feisty and merry little dogs Smile. Though I do have a longing for a whippet or Italian Greyhound.

We have a happy little JRT who LOVES our two cats, happily shares her bed, food, me (!) and cuddles.

Go for a puppy, if they are used to your cat from young and taught the cat is not to be chased it'll be easier than an older/rescue dog.

furryhat · 19/12/2017 21:39

Pug!!!

Jenda · 19/12/2017 21:40

I had a lovely cairn, big personality. Would walk for miles and miles. She was great fun and great for sofa cuddles too!

applesareredandgreen · 19/12/2017 21:43

If you are happy for a dog with 'attitude' then a JRT has plenty!! Mine is also happy to walk or to sleep on my lap. He does moult a bit but I think that's partly because we don't brush him enough.

Parsley I love your little dog - he's so cute!

Lhasa Apso, fab little dogs who love long walks or sofa days0

Parsley1234 · 19/12/2017 21:48

Thanks apples we always had cavaliers but they’re so overbred now our last one had cancer at 4 and was pts. Maltese are not overbred and terriers hence are robust and great fun !

BitOfFun · 19/12/2017 21:55

haveacupoftea, its funny you say that about Westies- I passed one with his teenager walking him with his mates earlier this evening, and he did exactly that- stopped dead. The teenage lad was loudly moaning that "he always bloody does this!" Xmas Grin

I adore Cavaliers too, they'll always be my favourites. You have to be so careful to go to an excellent ethical breeder though.

OP, I think a border terrier would be a really great fit for you.

What about a corgi? They can take lots of walking and they are decreasing in numbers in the uk.

haveacupoftea · 19/12/2017 22:52

@BitOfFun that's funny Xmas Grin stubborn little things they are!

To those saying pug - Xmas Shock I've owned pugs for many years - decades - and have even contributed to books on pug care. They should never be walked for long distances and if you are walking yours for a long time I implore you to stop for the sake of their joints. They could end up needing surgery for luxating patellas. That goes for pugs even from the sturdiest lines.

Praisebe · 20/12/2017 01:53

I'll add Maltese and Lhasa apso to the list Grin would never get a pug in a billion years such a poor breed feel so sorry for them

Our cat will happily put the dog in his place with a swipe of her paw Wink a pup would be no problem around her she can climb out of his way easily enough

@Praisebe like any breed there are bad breeders polluting the line but there are lines of pugs who are very happy and healthy! It can be hard to distinguish though even for the most experienced owner so you are wise not to go there.

dublinia · 20/12/2017 07:21

Would you consider a Poochon ?
Bichon - toy poodle cross. Loves his walks.

Defo a whippet or bedlington will match your greyhound in character, stamina for walks and will both be chilled out in the house!!!
