Why oh why do people buy Gumtree puppies?

I've just been sent a FB page of a family very local to me who bought a pug puppy from a Gumtree and and she died of parvo three days later.
I am sorry for them, and to have had their new pup die in their arms must have been truly awful.
They are now working with the RSPCA, and police and have been on local radio trying to get attention for the case, having discovered that the same seller was selling multiple breeds from several set-up addresses.
But really, to buy an unvaccinated, un-microchipped puppy from a 'breeder' on Gumtree , and to collect the pup half an hour after you see the ad - how could anyone think that was a good idea? I just don't know how many times the message has to be repeated :(

If it's stupid to suggest that nobody can guarantee a dog won't trigger allergies then yep. Stupid I am.
Read around the subject. Look at more than just your happy ending and you will see the truth!

NumberEightyOne · 05/12/2017 00:40

Can you really not see Wolfie that nowhere in my posts have I actually said that. Yet you insist on misquoting me and calling me idiotic. You've been torn to pieces on other threads by people who know a lot more about dogs than you ever will. I don't know I bothered to engage with you.

OhDear2200 · 05/12/2017 00:41

Not that I'm being pinicity or anything but I just realised you actually did say you can guarantee it if you get an older dog.

Wolfiefan · 05/12/2017 00:42

"They are fine"
Direct quote.
Night all.

NumberEightyOne · 05/12/2017 00:43

I meant with a puppy OhDear.

NumberEightyOne · 05/12/2017 00:52

Yes Wolfie if you read what I said in context you will note that I said many of these crosses are fine for allergy sufferers. Which is true. I think you know that though. I have said several times that I agree they shouldn't be advertised as such, you can't guarantee the coat (unless, as I have stated you get an older dog (and spend a lot of time with it to ensure as much as you can there won't be a reaction)) and gumtree, puppy farms and all unscrupulous puppy selling is abominable.

NumberEightyOne · 05/12/2017 00:56

I really shouldn't have to add this, but for the avoidance of doubt, please not that the word 'many' does not mean 'all'...

nooka · 05/12/2017 01:06

I don't understand why anyone who knows they are allergic to many dogs would buy a cross breed puppy. You can't tell what sort of coat an eight week old puppy is going to have, and if they have a poodle and a non poodle parent there is no way you can tell if they will favour the poodle or non poodle side when it comes to their coat. It seems like a huge risk to take, and if it doesn't work out and you are allergic to the dog's adult coat then you have a dog you can't live with, and the pup likely will have to be rehomed, having lost the best window for finding a good home. Surely it's much better to meet an adult dog and see if they trigger your allergies before making them a part of your family?

reallyanotherone · 06/12/2017 09:23

*You said don't believe poodle crosses are good for allergy sufferers. Not true.

But it is true for my DP and many others like him.*

The point with poodle crosses is that you already have a dog that is less likely to trigger allergies (poodle), and you are out crossing it with a breed which is more likely to trigger allergies.

So basic sense says if you have allergy issues, a poodle is the best choice. By crossing it, you are increasing the chance you may be allergic.

I saw someone looking for a yorkie, but it had to be a poodle cross, because allergies. No amount of logic could persuade them that an actual yorkie is hypoallergenic in the same way a poodle is.

So in summary my issue is that there is no reason for poodle crosses. If you have allergies, there are several breeds to choose from. People have bought into the idea that a poodle cross somehow lowers the allergy risk, when in fact it’s the opposite.

I apologisein advance for the Daily Fail link.

This is how a lot of 'internet puppies' are bred.

Note the number of dead and dying dogs in the article.

I can sort of see why the Gumtree trade is thriving.

I don't have a dog. I'm not a fan of dogs TBH , they are there but I'm oblivious to them.

I would never ever do this but if I saw a puppy on Gumtree the illogical side of my brain would say "Buy it, home it and stop one dog from going through the system of being bought as a cute puppy, getting fed up with it, turfing it out in the gardens, 'kids lost interest' and into Rescue to sit and wait. For the home that might never materialise.

So yes, I think people really do think they are taking him/her away from all this. But nature abhores a vacuum so the next littler will be along to fill the gap.

Bubble2bubble · 08/12/2017 09:07

I agree, 70is, that a few people may think they are 'saving' a puppy this way, but the vast majority are just ignoring the facts.
