bad idea to let dog sleep in bedroom

Our 9 month old puppy normally sleeps in the kitchen, downstairs, and has done since day 1. Generally he isn't allowed upstairs, but is always eager to go up if he slips past the pet gate. He is absolutely fine with sleeping downstairs.

we are having house restoration done and downstairs will be a building site. we are considering letting him sleep upstairs with us whilst these go on, but I'm worried he will then get used to it.

does anyone with children have their dog upstairs? how do they respond to the crying/ being woken up/unsettled in the night?

thanks

I don't understand this thing of not letting dogs upstairs. Our previous dogs were always allowed upstairs and camped out with one of us. I'm not sure what problem it's meant to cause really. They never seemed bothered and would shift to another bed if they weren't comfy.

JumpingJellybeanz · 25/09/2017 19:06

Our dog always slept upstairs but he was a burrower and slept in a den he created amongst the clutter under the bed. We couldn't leave him downstairs because he could see hedgehogs in the garden, cue pandemonium.

Crazycatladyx5 · 25/09/2017 19:08

My dog sleeps on my bed......but there's usually only me in it. When my boyfriend stays over the dog and cats get shut out. She usually sleeps in her bed downstairs then & doesn't make a fuss. My mam never let dogs upstairs when we were kids. My dogs have always been allowed upstairs but it's only the latest one who's managed to sleep with me! She doesn't really get disturbed by anything....but she is 2 now, so a little older than yours.

ScarlettInSpace · 25/09/2017 19:13

My dog has his bed in the kitchen, but when me or OH is away overnight he sleeps upstairs. He knows too, if we're both here he goes straight in his bed after his last toilet trip, if one of us is missing he is upstairs on the bed before the lights are out downstairs Grin

Neither seems to do him any harm!

ItsNachoCheese · 25/09/2017 19:14

I adopted ddog 5yrs ago and he has slept in beside me since day 1. I dont have a problem with it besides he had jumped up and opened the door and jumped on the bed and was 💤💤 pretty much instantly. His previous owners must of let him up

wheresthel1ght · 25/09/2017 19:16

Both our dogs sleep upstairs and have never had issues with dd crying when she was a baby. Even now our male dog will come and lick/nibble at fingers if he doesn't think we have responded fast enough to her murmuring. Dd is now 4 and still suffers awful night terrors, our older female dog sleeps on the sofa bed in dds room to protect her. (dd has a stupidly high loft bed so neither dog can get on her bed)

My dp works nights and the male dog guards us all.

Neither is allowed on the bed but that doesn't stop them sneaking up!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 25/09/2017 19:17

Let the poor pup in.
He probably will just jump on the bed until you fall asleep and will then sleep on your side,on the floor.
Or bring his bed up.

We've had dogs on the bed for years and we're all fine.

bengalcat · 25/09/2017 19:21

We've a 20kg lab - she spreads herself out in the bed with her head in the pillow but shifts and curls up small when we're in the bed - and the cat jumps on to - neither disturb us

vinobell · 25/09/2017 20:47

good to hear it hasn't created problems in those that do both upstairs and down. definitely no option for him sleeping on our bed - he is a giant breed and already 42kg at 9 months!! there would be no room left for either of us !!

how about people with young babies - did they adjust to the change ok? any concerns about crying winding the dog up?

when the dogs go downstairs again do they get separation anxiety? we are trying to work thru some attention barking at the moment and don't want to make it worse

If yours is a giant breeds then is it good for him to do the stairs at his age?

GreatBigPolarBear · 25/09/2017 20:52

Ours sleeps in our room, on his own bed. He's not supposed to get on our bed but occasionally sneaks up-it's not the end of he world!
He's not allowed upstairs during the day so it's not mega 'doggy' (smelly or hairy) in our room.
He likes it and it stops us fretting about what he's getting up to downstairs

Expemsiveuniform · 25/09/2017 20:53

My puppy sleeps in with me every night. The boyfriend can like it or lump it when he's here.

randomsabreuse · 25/09/2017 20:54

We don't usually share with our lab because he snores, licks himself noisily and keeps us as awake. We have had no behavioural issues just the snoring and dreaming is worse than a baby!

dudsville · 25/09/2017 20:54

Ours sleep with us. It's nice.

GreatBigPolarBear · 25/09/2017 20:55

Hmm-I don't know about going about going downstairs again-he probably wouldn't like it.
Also, yes, crying babies do upset him-he doesn't get aggressive but will hide or wee. Which is marvellous when you're trying to sort the crying baby out at the same time as clean up wee Angry

ImpyDimpy · 25/09/2017 20:56

My gorgeous dog now sleeps on the bed with me & DH since we had a house fire. It made me realise I would actually have died trying to rescue him Shock

Fiona1984 · 25/09/2017 20:56

Our dog was crate trained when we adopted him, and sleeps in there at night. We left him out once but he had an accident.
I don't think I could stand his snoring either (he's terrible), I'm a very light sleeper.

Wonderflonium · 25/09/2017 20:59

My dog buggers off downstairs/onto the landing if the baby disturbs her at night but mostly isn't bothered by the crying.

Greyhorses · 25/09/2017 21:00

I've just evicted mine from the bedroom last week. No problems and they have always slept upstairs until now so I don't think it would take too long to get used to it either way!

elQuintoConyo · 25/09/2017 21:05

Our 20kg 2yo mutt sleeps on my side of the bed so my knees are up round my ears Grin but gets off during the night.

She is allowed upstairs during the day as DH works from home and she either lies on a rug by his feet or on the balcony off our bedroom so she can survey the street. And bark at the postman!

She lies on DS' bed as i read his bedtime story (she is very fond of Puppies And Kittens: this puppy can see a snail... this kitten can see a spider, etc) then jumps of when it's lights out.

We adopted her last November and she was an extremely scared, neglected, beaten puppy, so i am more than willing and delighted that she sleeps with us.

tkband3 · 25/09/2017 21:10

Our whippet sleeps in the bed with us - under the duvet, between me and DH Grin. We even bought a super-king size bed to accommodate him Blush.

Pollydonia · 25/09/2017 21:20

My lab is currently snoozing in his bed next to our bed. He sleeps really well with us and would cry all night like he did for the first 6months if we left him downstairs.

ImNotReallyReal · 25/09/2017 21:22

I used to be a hardcore no dogs on the bed person. My dogs slept in their dog beds in my room. I thought that was pretty acceptable, kind really.

Then DH came along and I'm now sleeping with my knees around my ears and putting up with their snoring and woofy dreams. 17 years of this!

DH claimed that as we work (50% of the time someone is at home during the working day!) that they are neglected and need our company at night.

I've also got my young daughters in the bed, it's a bloody free for all here and I sleep on a postage stamp sized area. Got to love them all. When we had cats they joined in too. I spend a lot of time washing bedding and duvets. I'm thinking of giving in and buying two king size beds and pushing them together in the master bedroom just to get space. It's co-sleeping extreme here Blush

I have a pet free guest bedroom where I take naps if I get a chance. That's bliss.

AgainPlease · 25/09/2017 21:29

Our dog has an upstairs burrow/cave bed and downstairs day bed. The cave bed is just outside our door on the landing so we don't feel awkward when having sex and just just close the door Blush but otherwise he (the dog) likes to be close to us.

If me or DH are away for the night then ddog is allowed to sleep on a "his" rug which lays on top of our duvet. Although sometimes if he's very cold he'll sneak in under the covers by our feet.

Thataintnoetchasketch · 25/09/2017 21:33

Both my dogs sleep downstairs by their own choice. When I was pregnant our whippet started sleeping upstairs in our room when I was in the house alone at night (DH works mainly nights) so we bought him a basket to go at the foot of our bed. Both dogs used to wander upstairs to check on us when DS was up overnight feeding and often looked as shattered as we were by the morning! Now DS is a toddler they've went back to sleeping downstairs. Our whippet was a really anxious dog when we got him but baby crying/being up didn't really seem to bother him. I think we'd have made him more stressed forcing him to sleep downstairs when he wanted to be in the room with us at that time
