bad idea to let dog sleep in bedroom

Our 9 month old puppy normally sleeps in the kitchen, downstairs, and has done since day 1. Generally he isn't allowed upstairs, but is always eager to go up if he slips past the pet gate. He is absolutely fine with sleeping downstairs.

we are having house restoration done and downstairs will be a building site. we are considering letting him sleep upstairs with us whilst these go on, but I'm worried he will then get used to it.

does anyone with children have their dog upstairs? how do they respond to the crying/ being woken up/unsettled in the night?

thanks

CrustyDog has his own bed in our bedroom. Sometimes he come up onto the bed in the middle of the night.

Worst things are his snoring and stinky chuffs.

the snoring is a good point - our pup is SO LOUD Grin would defintely keep me awake. not sure he would be content with sleeping on the landing as he would be intent on sneaking into us....didnt think about the sex part Blush

how do those with young pups stop them going through all your stuff? Ours snuffles everywhere and I'm terrified id wake upto chewed everything and things pulled out of drawersor is it just me with a badly behaved dog

Ours used to sleep in the bed with us when we got him and then when I was pregnant but once we had the baby he had to sleep downstairs (because we have a next to me crib and I was worried about him getting in)

Now he sleeps in a crate and goes there himself after his last toilet in the evening and he can tell we are closing up ready to go to bed!

You mentioned the baby crying. Every few days throughout the pregnancy I would play baby crying sounds on YouTube for a few minutes to get him used to it and now if DD is wailing he's not bothered, either just stays asleep or looks at me furiously because he thins I'm not helping her!

It really makes your bed/ sofa stink, even if you think it doesn't. If your dog has fleas or ticks, they will also inhabit your bed. But lots of people think it's lovely.

It's natural for dogs to wake up and go back to sleep during the night (and day). Unlike people they don't suffer by disturbed sleep. So that is not a problem if the child disturbs them by crying or you getting up.

Don't knock it till you've tried itmare.

Dog managed to escape last night from his cage. I woke up to claws tip-tapping on floorboards (we currently have no carpets). Ushered him back in, I'm hoping he's not figured out how to unlock it. I doubt it, he's too stupid lol.

We had dog for 6 years before we had kids always had run of house, just carried on after. He's slept in our room from 3 days after we got him when he wouldn't shut up! If kids wake him up In night he just takes himself to sleep on settee in a huff! In fairness he's never tried to sleep in their room (i wouldn't let him) he prefers to be round us. If dh is away working I often wake up to find him laid next to be. He's so lovely like a big bear! Ddog not dh!Grin

Worth saying op the vet told me it's kinder to let them sleep upstairs with you as it's a pack type thing

In answer to pups at night, we crated ours in our bedroom until they got through the puppy phase. A Kong filled with snacks (gross raw sausage type thing), it got them through the night although we did get up to let them out to wee every couple of hours at first when they were very little.

Crate door was only shut for about a month then they just took themselves off to bed when we did, puppy pad was left out until they were about 6 months until we were sure there wouldn't be accidents. Now they are 9 and 10 and just do as they please.

I agree that the pack sleeps together. I don't mean you need your dog on you bed, but upstairs with you is best. Just my opinion and my dogs agree Grin

Can't solve the snoring and farting problems though. So I got an air purifier and use essential oils to help remove any smell. I do admit they are smelly though, but so be it. So are toddlers and husbands.

I like my dog's snoring.

DH I could happily strangle, the dog's snoring is very much acceptable.
