Am I. It's or does the dog know I'm pregnant?

I'm 11 weeks pg with my second, and DDog is all over me. Way more cuddly than usual. I'm wondering if I smell different, and if it's regressing him to his puppyhood. I was expecting DD when we first brought him home aged 10 weeks, so perhaps I smell comforting to him now I'm pregnant again? Or maybe I'm reading way too much into it and he's just being a dog?!

Did anyone else's dog act different in response to pregnancy, or am I a nutter for thinking it? Happy to be told it's the latter Grin

Yeh, dog knows.

PinkFluffyFairy · 11/09/2017 20:27

I'm serious btw.

juneybean · 11/09/2017 20:28

Yeah my normally hyper pup was very gentle with my friend when she was 6 weeks. They know.

Ilikehappy · 11/09/2017 20:30

Dogs definitely know.

MissSmiley · 11/09/2017 20:31

Our dog would sleep under my side of the bed when I was pregnant but not at any other time. He just knew.

IrregularCommentary · 11/09/2017 20:33

My dog got really protective over me when I was pregnant. They definitely know.

tinymeteor · 11/09/2017 20:35

I don't think he's being protective - beagles aren't that selfless tbh. More that he's gone a bit pathetic and needy lately. Silly pup.

I know this is the Doghouse but my cat knew both times, before I did. Pretty much the only time she was pleasant during her long life Grin

OrphanAccount · 11/09/2017 20:37

My dog definitely knew. He kept sniffing my stomach and became very protective. Whenever anyone unfamiliar came to the door he would physically put himself between me and the 'stranger'. Was very sweet.

Dogs know stuff.

Oops4 · 11/09/2017 20:38

Blackbird.......so did my cat. They 100% know

readyforno2 · 11/09/2017 20:38

Don't know about dogs, but my cat definitely knew when I was pregnant. He barely left my side and would lie protectively over my stomach whenever possible.

LetMeChangeYourSocks · 11/09/2017 20:40

Yeah my cat knew too!!

albus55 · 11/09/2017 20:42

My dog hasn't had a clue my whole pregnancy but last night he wouldn't leave me alone and insisted on sleeping next to me on the couch which he never does. Contractions started at 4am today and he hasn't left my side since... took him 9 months but he definitely know now!

imjessie · 11/09/2017 20:44

My cats knew !!

HemanOrSheRa · 11/09/2017 20:54

OMG albus ShockGrin. Congratulations!

Of course your dog knows, dafty. They know EVERYTHING. I got my dog after I had DS but she won't leave my side when I am ill and have taken to my bed. She sits in a certain 'on guard' spot in order to 'smile' and kiss any intruders whilst she is at The Helm. Very helpful.

My dear cat knew when I was pregnant. The teeny (dead) gifts I had! Although the two cats I have now just eye me up for the chances of getting or whether they should cut their losses and start eating me Grin.

ChabuddyGsPonytail · 11/09/2017 21:00

My cat knew. She used to sit directly on my bump and purr and followed me around madly when I was in labour.

youarenotkiddingme · 11/09/2017 21:28

Yes they know.

My friends dog was the most cuddley softest thing I've ever met! Gorgeous dog and very good with people.

When I was pg she would sit at my feet almost guarding me whenever I was around there and when ds was born she'd sit by the pram and run to me if he so much as sighed Grin

ChabuddyGsPonytail · 11/09/2017 21:46

Don't mean to dampen it down but they also sense when you're gravely ill. My ex-Fil's dog was constantly by his side, I mean excessively so, from some time just before he got diagnosed with a terminal illness and all throughout the end of his life.

confusedandemployed · 11/09/2017 21:49

Chabuddy I agree (love your username btw). Our old Lab was stuck to my DM like glue when she was ill.

I'm sure illness, pregnancy etc have specific smells which are undetectable to humans.

BeepBeepMOVE · 11/09/2017 21:50

Higher metabolism = higher body temp = animals like warmer things. Soz. Especially true with cats and sick people.

ChabuddyGsPonytail · 11/09/2017 21:54

Thank you confused Smile.

It's young babies as well. Our old lovely Alsatian used to sleep by my cot and go and alert someone if I cried (before the baby alarms). I think they (cats/dogs) can sense vulnerability.

pigsDOfly · 11/09/2017 22:41

Another cat one. Not pregnancy, but after I had a hysterectomy my neutered female cat started peeing on the furniture - sofa and arm chairs.

I took her to the vet, obviously, vet could find nothing physically wrong. However, very tactfully he asked me if anything had changed with my health recently and I told him about the operation.

The reason he asked me was because he'd come across exactly the same behaviour with other cats after their owners had had hysterectomies and strongly suspected the same thing was happening with my cat - he had a strong interest in animal behaviour and psychology and I think he was quite chuffed that I confirmed his theory.

The weeing didn't last long and soon she was her old self again. Of course she could have been upset because I'd been away in hospital but given that she'd never reacted that way when I'd had any other operations I can only assume vet was right and it was a reaction to some hormonal change in me.

Topnotes · 11/09/2017 22:53

My cat knew about DS1 before I did. She started pulling out her fur on her back almost as soon as I fell pregnant. She'd never done it before and she had s bald stripe down her back which only grew back after he was born. It was really weird and spooky that she knew.

MonkeyPoozzled76 · 11/09/2017 23:00

One of my mums dogs (whom is usually bonkers and full) on is obsessed with cuddling up next to me and had been since the early weeks of my pregancy. He just wants to rest his head on me constantly. He's turned into a complete soppy goon round me.

My mum's older dog who's spent far more time with me since a pup couldn't give two hoots about me currently. It's a complete role reversal!
