Elphame I really didn't want to feed wet as I hate the smell but BiteyDog is thriving now we have replaced half his kibble with wet as well. Like you I have found his poos are much better. It has also been helpful recently as I think it is much kinder on his stomach than kibble alone.

Fillybuster · 28/10/2017 12:41

I'm way behind on the thread, so sorry for not replying to pp and instead just rocking up with a question!!

It's about raw meat. I always assumed that chicken, for example, wasn't an option because of the bones? I've got a chicken neck, 2 feet and a giblet left over (raw) from last nights roaster....can I give them to Fillypup after all? He's now 5.5 months and heading into full teenager mode if that makes any difference.

Thank you all!

BiteyShark · 29/10/2017 11:21

Sorry Filly I don't feed raw but I thought it was no weight bearing bones but I wouldn't trust what I said was correct as I haven't really researched it at all.

Elphame · 29/10/2017 12:57

I don't know much about raw feeding either I'm afraid.

I've been a dreadful puppy "mum" this weekend. We've been wild camping on Dartmoor and I didn't want to take him. Glad I didn't too as it rained the whole time and he'd have been soaked through and very cold.

DS and his partner have been puppy sitting for me. I missed him dreadfully so I rushed home for puppy cuddles only to find they've taken him to the pub to meet friends and won't be home for hours Sad

BiteyShark · 29/10/2017 13:01

Elphame can you go and meet them in the pub then smuggle pup home early for cuddles :)

BiteyDog is poorly AGAIN. No vomiting but straining and watery mucus poos every couple of hours. I am knackered as had to get up all through the night. I have pro kolin so hoping that sorts it out as I think I might sob on my vets shoulder if I have to take him back again.

Elphame · 29/10/2017 13:22

I don't know where they are Sad. He may be a holy terror at times but I am really missing him. Guess I'm well and truly bonded.

Poor Biteydog. Is there something in your garden he's snacking on which is toxic? I think most of my garden is not very doggy friendly. Certainly plenty that would cause gastric upsets. I'm currently stopping Elfpup from munching on rowan and cotoneaster berries as both are gastric irritants

BiteyShark · 29/10/2017 13:28

He doesn't munch on anything other than grass which he does all the time even when well. I think now he has been eaten some food after his vomiting episodes his other end is playing up after all the trauma. The problem is he is straining so he keeps going frequently even though it's only a little bit at a time. I just would like some sleep as it's been two days now every few hours although I only started the pro kolin yesterday so still a bit early to kick in.

Elphame · 29/10/2017 13:49

No little mushrooms in that grass being hoovered up as well? Hope the medicine does the trick for you. Sleep deprivation is a terrible thing. especially combined with worry about your poorly hound

BiteyShark · 29/10/2017 16:29

I can't remember the last good nights sleep
I had. First it was all the vomiting or pacing with pain and now it's the runs. Who knew dog ownership could be this hard Sad. Even DH said to me I bet you had wished you had married a vet then I could get BiteyDog well Hmm Grin

Greyhorses · 29/10/2017 16:32

Bitey I hope puppy feels better soon. Could it be something like IBS? My friends dog gets it frequently and it sounds similar.

I've discovered they don't call GSD German shredders for nothing. If it hits the floor it's fair game Grin
She's also still having constant toilet accidents whenever she's left. It's really getting me down and is causing massive issue with me and DH so I think it's maybe time to call in an expert. Every single time I leave her, even for 5mins she wees and poos everywhere. She is not distressed in any way but seems to think whenever she's alone she can toilet anywhere!

I'm considering bringing her in the bedroom tonight but DH thinks this will make everything worse. Confused

BiteyShark · 29/10/2017 16:42

Grey I did think he had that before but before this illness he was eating well and his poos were perfect. He was bad after his GA when he was neutered so maybe the sedation for the scans has had a similar effect or even the drugs he is still on for his vomiting is causing it.

Grey DH and I are also snippy at each other over this as we have different views on what to do so I know how you feel. Getting someone in sounds sensible as long as your DH is around to hear it as then you can both work from their advice.

Greyhorses · 29/10/2017 17:05

It's just so frustrating as I feel like I'm doing something majorly wrong. Surely at nearly 6 months most people have managed to house train especially with such an intelligent and willing to please breed Blush

Today I put her in the kitchen for 15 minutes while DS had dinner and she managed to do 2 wees and a poo. Strange thing is she could see me the whole time as it's a glass door and I could see her lying flat out with dog1 absolutely not upset in any way so I have no idea when she did it Confused

They are harder work that I remembered that's for sure!

BiteyShark · 29/10/2017 17:17

Sometimes it's just something really simple that others can see but you can't as you're living it day in day out. I often find even now at training they point things out to me and I think why didn't I see that I was reinforcing that (bad) behaviour Blush.

Abhorsen · 30/10/2017 16:04

I’m way behind but hope biteydog is feeling better and sorry your having such a hard time grey - that sounds so frustrating.

Does anyone have any suggestions for helping puppies to settle down. All the training things I’ve seen say to reward when he is lying quietly but I swear my pup never sleeps or even lies down during the day unless we’re in the car or I’m out (I’ve spied on him!).
So for example today he slept while I had a run after we’d been for a walk first thing and then I’m guessing he slept at lunchtime for half an hour while I drove to and from the forest we walk at on a Monday and that’s been it. I work part time and am self employed on non ‘normal’ work days and cannot get anything done as he constantly wants to play / chew my leg / jump up at the table.
I really don’t think he wants to play as when I tried he got really nippy (usually a sign he’s overstimulated or tired) but I just can’t seem to get him to relax 😢
Having a flashback to ds being a baby that couldn’t switch off at all and wanted 100% attention all the time - thinking it must be me 😳🤦‍♀️

BiteyShark · 30/10/2017 19:10

BiteyDog is not getting any better even with pro kolin. Going to have to try and go back to the vets after work tomorrow. He is also coughing and heaving despite the anti acid drugs. I think I might have a bit of a sob as it's just never ending and I am exhausted.

Abhorsen when young BiteyDog would only settle when put in his crate. As he got older he would then settle more on his own but I can't say I ever 'trained' him specifically. It did help that we have hard floors so he would only lie down on his beds which I think helped a bit as that was also his sleeping place.

DeepfriedPizza · 30/10/2017 20:08

Pro kolin didn’t help PizzaPup on its own but Bran flakes added sorted her right out. That wasn’t anything underlying though.

BiteyShark · 31/10/2017 05:43

7 times in the middle of the night. I thought toilet training was knackering but I haven't had any decent sleep since he started with his vomiting this time last week. Vets open at 8 and I am going to request the earliest appointment at any of their branches just to get him looked at quickly. The thing is I have been working at home as well. I really need to get to the office at some point. My stress levels are through the roof Sad

Sorry just needed a mini rant otherwise I may crack.

sazzakamazz · 31/10/2017 07:54

Hello!
Im New here. I have an almost 12 week old golden retriever pup thatvwe've had for 3 weeks.

Has anyone else found that half term hols have made house training so much harder? When it was just me and her I thought we had it cracked in the day (not at night!!!) but this week with the kids and husband around we have gone seriously down hill.

Any tips? Just carry on and it will click?
Thanks!

bluetongue · 31/10/2017 08:09

Hello Sazz, welcome to the madhouse Grin. I can't really advise on toilet training as it was the one area of puppy ownership I found easier than I expected! Some of it is just age and maturity. Just keep putting puppy out regularly and it will eventually click.

Bitey so sorry to hear that Bitey dog is still poorly Sad Hope the vet appointment goes well and you get some answers.

Only a couple of days until the trainer comes back to visit. I'm going to ask with help with his jumping up ( he's really shocking) and with his on lead walking as he's very inconsistent and I'm not enjoying walking him as much as I should,

BiteyShark · 31/10/2017 08:30

sazza yes keep going :) I found toilet training was hit and miss anyway until he eventually got it so don't worry about a short blip.

Thanks blue we have an appointment very soon which is good as I hate to see him so unwell and it's clearly hurting him to go each time. Good luck with your trainer. I am still working on stopping him jump up at people but the problem is some people encourage it when we are out Sad

DeepfriedPizza · 31/10/2017 11:18

How did it go bitey?

BiteyShark · 31/10/2017 11:26

Hi Pizza, thanks for asking. He has had blood tests and we await those (should get results today) and depending on whether they show anything or not we may be back in tomorrow to be readmitted for more tests such as an endoscopy. Oh I have the wonderful task of collecting as many poo samples as possible Sad

Elphame · 31/10/2017 11:52

I've been checking back for updates. I'm glad they are now doing some serious investigations on him. This has gone on long enough. Poor little chap. I don't envy you the poo sample collecting one bit. I hope the blood test results come back this afternoon.

I'm not surprised you're stressed. You really can't leave him alone but I guess a dog with tummy trouble wouldn't be welcome in the office either.

BiteyShark · 31/10/2017 12:09

Elphame All I can say is it involves paper plates cut up to make little shovels to get the poo samples from the grass Grin. I have just got the forth one though since coming back from the vets.

Normally he would go to daycare but he is straining so much I can't let him go but if he does get admitted tomorrow I might try and go and show my face in the office for a few hours.

Think they are looking for signs of pancreatitis in the blood tests Sad

Elphame · 31/10/2017 12:49

Oh I hope not.
