It's not a cockapoo!

Yet again today I had someone stop and ask if my dog is a cockapoo. No she's not, she's a toy poodle! She doesn't look anything like a cockapoo (to me) but I suppose people always think of poodles as having fancy/intricate clips, so if they see my teddy bear looking pup (8 months) wallowing in the village pond, they perhaps assume it couldn't possibly be a prissy toy poodle. I live in a rural area, so don't meet that many people, but I still get this comment regularly. Does anyone else with a poodle get this?

We used to have a standard poodle and kept his coat short but nobody ever asked what breed he was. Maybe its because your darling is so small still?

Yes, me! I've got a Standard Poodle and I get asked if she's a Labradoodle all the time. She looks nothing like a Labradoodle!
People just see curly fur and assume it's a Poodle cross as they're so common.

I feel sorry for pure poodles these days as the breed has been crossed with so many others.

I think the misconceptions a lot of people have when it comes to poodles it a big part of why their crosses have become so popular.

People want the coat but think poodle are useless little frou-frou dogs so find the idea of one crossed with a "proper dog" like a spaniel or lab or whatever very appealing.

It's such a shame as poodles of all sizes are absolutely fantastic dogs in their own right and it's a shame they get overlooked because as soon as people hear "poodle" they think the first picture rather than the others.

Whatever she is, she's gorgeous. And a very sensible sized dog.

I had similar when my cocker was an unclipped puppy. People would be so insistent that I was wrong and she wasn't a cocker. She was called an Afghan puppy and the woman said I had been lied to!

My Poodle is feisty, has a deep bark, she's an excellent guard dog and would much sooner attack an intruder than my Lab who looks scarier and acts the part but he wouldn't bite anybody.

Here's mine, I just have her cut short all over every 2 months or so.

Oh she is gorgeous! I'm considering a poodle next year, DH is allergic to a lot of dogs and had always ruled out a dog for this reason, but then he met a cockerpoo and wasn't ill - but I won't give my money to a dodgy breeder of crosses.

The clips are historical and intended to protect the dog's vital organs from cold water as they were used to retrieve waterfowl during hunting.

I have a similar thing with my long haired dachshund who regularly gets mistaken for a Spaniel/Spaniel cross. I think most people are just rubbish at recognising dog breeds. So am I to be honest...

invisible I've had mine since my youngest was 2 and she's great with the kids. She loves it when their friends visit, she loves the business and noise of our house and being involved in it all.
I took the DC out on their bikes yesterday and the dog had a great time running along side them. She likes to make sure they are all safe and that we are all together.
She's very loyal and obedient.

I suspect the clips are like of "facts" that pop up in breed histories and are used to justify weird aesthetic stuff, whether it's clips or conformation of the dog itself.

I've never yet seen a working standard poodle in anything other than a pretty workmanlike, same-length-all-over clip.

I love mini poodles! Does she bark a lot OP just out of curiosity? Hardly see any where we live but so many cockapoos.

She's is adorable, people do get confused by dog breeds, many years ago we had a gorgeous Bearded Collie, I lost count of how many times people asked if he was an Old English Sheepdog aka Dulux dog!

It's because firstly poodle crosses, funnily enough look like poodles and secondly people are rubbish at dog breeds...

I've been asked if my totally Rottweiler looking and coloured Rottweiler is a black lab, a mastiff, a Rottweiler cross and a Doberman.

Have name, no, she doesn't. Yes if the doorbell goes, but other than that she's pretty quiet, although I don't encourage her as I don't like yappiness. Our previous dog was a jrt, much missed, but boy did he moult, all the time. I am still enjoying the lack of shed hair, such a novelty.
Shane bitchy, your dog is lovely, and that's the trim I prefer. I took mine to the parlour once, but now I do it myself, to the best of my abilities. Ours loves being involved in every thing too, it's good to have company when you're gardening and doing the housework, although why she finds it fascinating I don't know. She just loves water as well, but I suppose that's in the blood.

I have the same problem, with my mini. The other day I was asked why I'd had my cockapoos's hair cut like a poodle?!
I think it's poodles are quite rare and cockapoos are as common as muck everywhere.

I am now considering a poodle, do you promise less yappy than JRT and loves water?
