The weather is awful. Does your dog walk in the rain?

Eric walks in wind, rain, snow, sleet, fog whatever is thrown at us really. Today it is really awful here, but regardless Eric has been out for a good hour. He's obviously got wet through and filthy as have I Hmm but two complete strangers have chastised me for taking him out in this weather.
Admittedly being small and white and poodly he does look a delicate soul but he is fit and hardy and as I told them it is he that drags me out and not the other way round.
So do you all have sensible dogs who like to stay clean and dry because I've only seen one other dog out today or are you all wet and muddy today like me? Go on make me feel better.

It didn't bother me them commenting tbh I think its most likely because Eric looks pathetic when he's wet through. There's not much to him and his fur disguises it a lot but wet through he looks like a drowned rat tbh.

Old greyhound used to get all excited for a walk, poke his head and maybe one foot out of the door. 9 times out of 10 he'd just stand there, before slowly retreating indoors backwards. And this was with a waterproof coat on. He'd then go to the back door and look pretty cross that it was raining out there too.

If it was raining really hard he'd rush out in his coat for a quick wee and then straight back in.

Bluebell9 · 29/06/2017 15:21

My lab x springer loves water. As long as its already on the ground and not falling from the sky. I have to physically push him out the door to go to the loo when its raining. He'll do his business whilst giving me death stares and run straight in after. he doesn't like walking in the rain either but will happily throw himself into any stream, pond or the sea!

Wolfiefan · 29/06/2017 15:26

@Floralnomad thanks for the hint.
Thought I would get away without one but no! Grin

CMOTDibbler · 29/06/2017 15:26

Mine hate the rain. If it's really raining, I have to put on ddog1s raincoat before he will sneak out for a wee.

My current foster pup has longer hair and seems less bothered

Wolfie, Milgi coats will make a raincoat which fits giant pup properly, and they are luffly people too. I like a fleece for light rain, but not for downpours

Fab41 · 29/06/2017 15:28

Our irish terrier hates the rain, he will refuse to go out until he is fit to burst and then run out and pee for ages. Always tries to drag me back home if we try to go for a walk in the rain. I will be looking for a coat for him soon.

yecartmannew · 29/06/2017 15:29

2 Hairless Chinese Cresteds here, no they will not go out when its wet. They have be shoved out of the back door for a wee. They don't get hyper from being stuck indoors though, they just like to laze on the sofa under a blanket when its wet outside.

On the plus side though I don't have to worry quite so much about the hot weather, they love it and as long I am generous with the sunscrean they are happy outside and rarely get too hot.

My old dogs (doberman x and some sort of terrier x) were out in all weathers so I have done my share of vile weather walking.

IratusCats · 29/06/2017 15:31

Mdog loves walks when it's raining, especially when he rolls in wet grass and gets soaked.

Blodplod · 29/06/2017 15:40

Floralnomad, I am actually trying to convince myself that I didn't type your message with a name change. Grin freaky.. but yes yes yes to equafleece, bone dry underneath in the LASHING (have to shout that bit) rain, or put on a dry dog after getting soaked and it dries the dog out. I used to have the horse rug too.. brilliant. I have the tankie version, no zips, clips or surcingle straps.. marvellous product!

Wolfiefan · 29/06/2017 15:45

Thanks @CMOTDibbler.
Shall have a look. She's not keen on coats either. She has a cool coat. Hopefull she will grow into it! Grin

Floralnomad · 29/06/2017 16:32

blodpod , that's the one we mainly use , ours are all in the dark green but I might have to get him some blue ones this year as he's wearing blue collars and harnesses now.

Eolian · 29/06/2017 16:36

I live in Cumbria. If I didn't take (large, energetic and fairly weatherproof) ddog out in the rain, he wouldn't get much exercise. He doesn't give a monkey's if it's raining. He has a coat but it tends to come loose or twist round when he's hurtling about like a maniac and skidding around in the mud.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 29/06/2017 16:39

The filthier the weather the happier my dogs are.

BillyDaveysDaughter · 29/06/2017 16:41

My Patterdale is an all-weather working dog - nothing will stop her bounding out of the front door for a walk, shouting her fuzzy face off. Even if her walks are necessarily very short now, owing to her spinal problems. Sad

Out in the garden to pee in slight drizzle though? NOPE.

HerOtherHalf · 29/06/2017 16:50

Mine goes swimming in the north sea pretty much every day so rain or cold doesn't even register with him. God help me if he doesn't get his walks when he knows they're due though.

Blodplod · 29/06/2017 16:55

Floralnomad, we have the dark green too! Grin

Unicorn81 · 29/06/2017 17:11

Haha yes to walkies in any weather, no to going for a pee in rain, he will hold it until hes crying about it

becotide · 29/06/2017 17:30

My dog is a working line Jack Russell, with a very hard coat, good hard paws and perfectly bred for British weather.

She will have no truck with even a mild drizzle, thank you very much, and prefers to lie on the sofa, avoiding the back door, unless it is short sleeves weather.

Poppypooch · 29/06/2017 17:42

My Springer spaniel doesn't care what the weather is doing the muddier the better Grin Doberman on the other hand is a wimp, he's a bit of a goldilocks dog, doesn't like it too hot or cold, doesn't like it too windy a wee breeze is fine drizzle, is ok but not the pouring rain, he still goes out but keeps running back to me as if to say "hurry up I'm getting soaked here" Grin although he loves going in the river or the pond Hmm

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 29/06/2017 17:44

My dog won't, especially at the moment as he's just has his summer haircut so he only has his soft undercoat and not the harsher, more protective, top coat. But he doesn't like the rain very much even when his hair is long. I keep telling him that he's a native Irish breed and so should barely notice the rain, but he's not having it.

CornflakeHomunculus · 29/06/2017 17:49

My whippets go on complete strike when it's raining, they hate it. Cold is fine (including snow) as long as they're bundled up but even with coats on they hate anything more than a light drizzle.

Any time I've either tried to force the issue or the weather has turned when we've already been out they either gather round my feet trying to use me as shelter or start power walking towards home Grin

I've given up now and they're very happy to make do with a quick nip out between showers if we can manage it or extra indoor activities.

Asmoto · 29/06/2017 17:53

My dog is oblivious to weather conditions. I call him the 'doggie barometer' in winter because I let him out when I get up at 6 and it's still dark, and judge what the weather is by the state of his coat when he comes back in.

Flumplet · 29/06/2017 17:54

I have a cocker spaniel who hates the wet!! He's currently refusing to even go for a wee in the garden (putting the brakes on at the back door) because it's drizzling. A walk around the block would give him the right hump.

LittleCandle · 29/06/2017 17:55

Ddog doesn't like his coat, but has to wear it if its pouring. That said, if its really disgusting (like today!) he's happy enough to go out long enough to do the necessary and then pop into the garden when he needs to do anything else.

StandardPoodle · 29/06/2017 20:49

The standard poodle and I have got soaked twice daily for the last 2 days - he happily and me resignedly. The old springer cross rescue did both morning walks but stayed determinedly in her basket for the afternoon walks.
