Dog breeds that won't turn on children

I really want to get a dog but with having a toddler I'm terrified of getting a dog that would bite it seriously hurt him. Are there any breeds that are safer than others, or less likely to turn. I've been told that surprisingly smaller breeds can be quite viscious even though they look small and innocent. Please help!

Paws & People Rescue in Banbridge is another one worth watching for smaller breeds and pups.

Glad you want to avoid the gumtree etx route. You may have to travel.
Cornflake gives excellent advice.
Read up on the breed. Major concern for me would be the amount of grooming. They also seem prone to separation anxiety and some are very barky!
Re stats. Certain breeds may be high up the list of attacks but then there may be lots and lots of that specific breed about.
I still wouldn't want a pup and a toddler. Unless you separate them the child will get nipped. Puppies mouthe.

We had a puppy, a baby and a toddler. In retrospect it wasn't a good idea, because the puppy ended up minimally trained. The worst crime the pup committed wasn't mouthing or nipping the children (they don't remember her doing it, but I can guarantee you that she did), but chewing up the odd precious toy.

On the plus side, the DC grew up very happy, confident and capable with dogs, and the dog has had a very happy and much-loved life (and was absolutely fab with children until she got old and intolerant).

I wouldn't do it again, for the training aspect. Luckily she was a small, good-natured dog. Had she been bigger, it would have been much harder.
