Just wondering whether anyone else has got a puppy recently and in the same boat as us? Interested to hear how how others are getting on.

We've had our 8 week old puppy for a few days now and things are okay... he's a complete cross of lots of different breeds so enjoying trying to work out what in him!

House training seems to go great and then at night he just sits there in the middle of the grass not wanting to even walk around! Never mind wee!

Our older dog isn't particularly impressed but has been good with him so far. Just looking forward to him sleeping through the night without needing a wee. Completely forgot how having a puppy completely takes over your life for a little while!

My advice would be don't try and follow every piece of advice - whatever you want to do is fine. I worried and worried about 'making a rod for my own back' and thought I'd have to leave him to cry in his bed but after listening to him cry I brought him into my bed and we all felt much better after a proper night sleep. I know not right for everyone but my point is you do what you want to do - there's so much conflicting advice and at the end of the day you have to do what's best for you and your family.

I second SkeletonSkins advice on not worrying about whether you are doing the right thing as there are lots of opinions out there and every dog and owner is different.

murphys · 22/02/2017 09:55

Bitey, I am making the most of the snuggles as I know I will blink and the I wont be able to pick him up anymore.

The bones question.. firstly I am worried that his teeth will break. I know that is probably a crazy thing to worry about, they are super sharp, but just so tiny. And, I think deep down I have a fear, we lost our old Lab last month, in his last few days he lost a few teeth to chewing a bone. So maybe I am just a bit paranoid. The other worry is that he hasn't been well. Last week he was found to have hookworm and coccida parasite, he had diarrhoea quite severely and is currently on treatment. I am just concerned about more runny poos, which will be a worry. He is only 5kgs now, so still very small, but he is chomping well now, so hopefully will catch up soon. I do give my other dog bones every now and then, but I don't want to give her one just yet if its not ok for pup to chew one yet (chances are he will find it and she will allow him to take it from her...she is a sop with him already....)

Yesterday he caught a bird. If I didn't see it myself I would not have believed it. He stalked and pounced it, really it was even bigger than him, a rock pigeon Shock. He did a job on it, and I did have to end if for the poor thing, as there was no way it would have survived those injuries. Sad He is damn fast for his size. Is this unusual for his age? (he only just 10 weeks) I really don't remember my previous Lab catching birds or anything at such a young age. He caught allsorts, mice, rats, birds, but I thought he was a lot older when it started. He was mighty proud of himself though..... Shock I was really more stressed as he hasn't had all his vacs yet (next one only begin of March)... and with being not well lately... Sigh, yes I am the paranoid Mum I see... Grin. And he isn't even my first dog, he is my 4th..... Grin

I also don't go by the book on everything. I don't agree on him just getting the silent treatment if he has done wrong, and praise when he has done right. If he is biting me, and its hurting, I am going to yell at him to stop... I am not going to ignore that. I did read that somewhere... but I just go with what I think to be honest. He also did not get the 'ok I will just ignore you' treatment when I found that he had chewed up his pillow... yes he got told off.... but I do think he was just party to that misdemeanour.... my other dog, who is 2 just had that GUILTY look all over her face. But puppy got caught with the stuffing in his mouth.... Grin

Toileting, if he poos in the house, I don't just ignore that anymore either. If I catch him in the act I do raise my voice, if I find the turd after and he comes while I am cleaning up, we have a chat about how unpleasant that is, I go outside with said poo, put it on the grass, tell him that's the idea. Then I pick it up and flush it. Needless to say, I spend an awful lot of time probably talking to myself, and carting poos about.... Grin.

Aw but he is so loved. All these things we will miss one day.... I think....

MiaMoo95 · 22/02/2017 10:03

My puppy is 6 month old now and he is an absolute nightmare. But as a tiny puppy he was horrendous!. He seems to have calmed down loads now and is actually doing really well. I was at the stage where I was crying every day because of how bad he was, so there's hope for everyone. He's called Moose.

Murphys, I'm loving the idea of your 'little chats' about poo with your puppy Grin

Has anyone else found that it's taken a long time for their pup to learn their name? Tilly is only just now responding properly at 10.5 weeks and three weeks after getting her. I'm sure my last girl learnt her name much quicker.

Owlish · 22/02/2017 10:06

Mia he is gorgeous!

murphys · 22/02/2017 10:13

Owlish I think that sounds about right. Max is really is just responding to his name since back end of last week really. but then again this is his third name so I did allow in confusion time

I think he thought his name was Good Boy Wee Wee Grin

I just see now how my neighbours must think I am a bit nutty..... Grin

Mia sorry but I did have a giggle. He look so sweet and innocent like butter wouldn't melt there in that photo. He is a Lab too isn't he?

murphys · 22/02/2017 10:27

In his favourite hiding spot where is his sister cannot reach him, plus where he stashes his finds of socks, pants.... etc

The other....frog dog...

murphys I used to worry about giving my pup a large stags antler to chew on but I figured out that was probably better than him trying to chew the large stones in the garden Grin

FlibbertigibbetArmadillo · 22/02/2017 13:15

Thanks skeletonskins I am very much loving the optimism (and honesty about the trials and frustrations) of this thread. Will join in with posting pics when I get the little boy home at the weekend!

Owlish · 22/02/2017 13:28

Tilly has been out lots today, she's pooed once but I haven't seen her pee. There are puddles hiding somewhere in the house, aren't there? Confused

murphys · 22/02/2017 13:37

You will find the dark patch on the mat later Owlish.. Grin

We aren't having all that a great toilet day either so don't feel despondent. Its been pouring with rain for two days solid now and its cold. Ok, I know its not UK cold but 16 degrees for him is clearly cold as he is doing a little shiver when he heads to the door........then changes his mind about going out. I shall have to remind him that he is a Labrador and he likes water. I think I need to get him a jersey Grin.

MiaMoo95 · 22/02/2017 15:15

Nope Murphys he's a paterdale x Lakeland terrier. Looks very like a lab. He's a bit bugged now and looks more like a terrier.

We've got our 3rd puppy class tonight - I'm dreading him making a show of me. For the first week he sat trembling under a chair for the first 15 minutes, so last week they sat us in the "shy guy" corner - hah! Well all I can say this week is that I'm sure we'll be in the naughty corner. He was humping a smaller dog during socialisation...oh the shame.

although he met MIL's 3-year-old Westie at the weekend and they got on like a house on fire chasing one another around the house.

He's very good at the actual training, picks it up really quickly and remembers it all week but he's just an ASBO in socialisation

Thewolfsjustapuppy · 22/02/2017 18:16

Re bones, how about starting on chicken feet? Raw ones can be frozen so good for teething and they thaw out as there are chewed. My pup demolishes them normally though she is so gummy at the moment it took her a while last night.
She went to doggy day care today so she has crawled into her bed exhausted and I won't see her till tomorrow morning. She only goes once a week for socialisation and she loves it.

SkeletonSkins · 22/02/2017 18:27

Don't worry Scarlet my pup likes a bit of humping too.... you're not alone!!

Love the pics Mia, we think our boy might have a bit of Patterdale in there somewhere.

Yours is gorgeous skeleton. He looks just like Moose as a tiny puppy.

murphys · 23/02/2017 06:08

THewolf ooh yes thanks, I didn't even think of chicken feet. They are easy to find here, we call them 'walky talkies'. They come frozen in a bag, with feet and beaks. Grin

Loving all the pics, all the pups are so gorgeous.

Haven't signed Max up yet for puppy class. He can only go to the next one which starts in 5 weeks, due to his parasite dilemma he is barred at the moment....

I think I should not go back to the same one that I went to with my 2 year old. She is just plain downright embarrassing. She is such a placid girl, but only until she got to puppy class. She spent an awful lot of time in time out whilst there. Learning the commands etc was a breeze, trainer always used her as the example as she picked up so quick. But when it came to the socialization part and off lead, oh gosh, she was a bloody nightmare. Pouncing all the other (much smaller) dogs, she is a large breed so was like a giant compared to the others. Her feet were the size of some of the other puppies. We were doing recall and other stuff, they were to see that we were going to the other side of the tunnel, they were meant to go through the tunnel to find us on the other side. No, not my dog. Once I called her, she came bounding across the park, saw the tunnel, knew I was at the other side of it, jumped clean OVER the tunnel and landed on top of me, breaking my arm. Hmm. She was 4.5 months old at the time, bloody hooligan! The training sort of went out the window after that, we still went but the trainer took her, as I couldn't really do it with one arm in plaster....

Still love her though Wink

Yokohamajojo · 23/02/2017 09:45

Hi all,
Can't believe I have missed this thread! We have our 14 week Irish Terrier, called Seamus. Who we've had since he was 8 weeks old. I think we're getting on alright. He sleeps through until 6ish in his crate downstairs, toilet training seems fine and he hasn't had an accident for a while.

Our main issue seems to be stones and other things he shouldn't eat (his own poo....) he picks up stones and chews them. He doesn't guard them and will happily swap the stone for a treat but it's annoying.

We let him off the lead for the first time last weekend in a secluded forest bit and he seemed fine, still a bit weary though as he likes people and loves chasing bicycles.

Loves his puppy classes

BiteyShark · 23/02/2017 10:09

Yokohamajojo mine was a real nightmare for stones as well. It was that bad I used to ignore the ones that were tiny as I knew they would pass through as he ate them and just got him to drop the large ones. He still does it to an extent but it is much much better and just seemed to subside as he got older. Chewing on ice cubes was also a good swop as he still got something hard to chomp on Grin

Yokohamajojo · 23/02/2017 10:24

BiteyShark
Good to hear he's not the only one, I try to be quite relaxed about it and he is teething. He loves his frozen carrots but not too into his Kong. May try another filling for it

Opentooffers · 23/02/2017 10:32

Anyone braving storm Doris today? My 5 month doodle will be causing trouble without his usual 2 walks/day. I'm thinking a quick dash between heavy showers may be possible.

Jenny70 · 23/02/2017 13:11

Question for those who've done this before.... when do they get wary of strangers etc? Molly just bounds up to anyone who enters house, or if we're out trys to get to them out of my arms.... which is great.

Will she stay this friendly and outgoing, unless she has a trauma/incident, or do they hit an age where they draw the line and those they don't know are strangers?

BiteyShark · 23/02/2017 13:20

Jenny mine never got wary of anyone.

SkeletonSkins · 23/02/2017 19:29

Jenny I think some can go through a fear period... not sure though.

Our pup isn't a fan of the storm especially going out to wee in it! On the plus side we left him with our older dog in the living room and he didn't cry, much more settled with company so that's good! Fast asleep a lot today but cant say I blame him with this weather!
