Just wondering whether anyone else has got a puppy recently and in the same boat as us? Interested to hear how how others are getting on.

We've had our 8 week old puppy for a few days now and things are okay... he's a complete cross of lots of different breeds so enjoying trying to work out what in him!

House training seems to go great and then at night he just sits there in the middle of the grass not wanting to even walk around! Never mind wee!

Our older dog isn't particularly impressed but has been good with him so far. Just looking forward to him sleeping through the night without needing a wee. Completely forgot how having a puppy completely takes over your life for a little while!

Is anyone else trying to puppy train and raise small children at the same time or am I the only crazy one??

I've currently got the puppy licking my 2 year old and the 2 year old licking her back Hmm

GypsyWanderer · 09/05/2017 13:58

Soubriquet I don't have children that young but I do have 5 kids which is a handful with training a pup at the moment. We have an older dog too who we got last year when the youngest was four. The hardest bit for me is trying to teach my twin boys who are nine, to stop winding the pup up. They tend to over stimulate and within minutes both dogs are manic! But seeing them run around together in the garden playing is wonderful so it is all worth itSmile you're little girl will grow up with puppy and they will be the best of friends.

Soubriquet · 09/05/2017 15:09

Yeah that's what I'm hoping

I've got two of them

2 year old boy
4 year old girl

So plenty of fun for pup

GypsyWanderer · 09/05/2017 16:43

I know what people say about getting a puppy with young kids but I think it is so lovely when done right. I've read it is supposed to be very good for a child's mental health tooSmile

aliasjoey · 09/05/2017 16:44

Gosh puppies are weird... !

So I cleaned thoroughly, moved the bed to a different spot, and replaced the cushion with some towels. Also got a few spots of wee on the puppy pad to remind him where to go (he had no problem with this until a week ago)

When we got home, he hadn't peed anywhere . Not in First Dogs bed, his own bed, on the lino, the pads... nothing. I thought he couldn't possibly manage that long, I was out for 5 hours! Checked that he hadn't secretly weed in a corner, nope.

Took him out, did a long wee. Came back in and less than 5 minutes later he had an accident (on carpet) so... maybe he really didn't go the whole time and had a full bladder? I guess they both sleep all day...

Some dog walkers do a 'pop in service' where they just come and let the dogs out, which I may try. At the moment pup still gets excited and widdles all over us when we get home which would be embarrassing! But according to google, some puppies don't grow out of that til they're a year old and I don't want to wait that long as don't like leaving them all day (it's only some days)

Sorry this is long, I'm just thinking things through in my head... 😀

Soubriquet · 09/05/2017 16:44

Well I'm a sahm anyway so now seems to be a perfect time

Just have to be very strict with certain rules like no picking up the dog or when she's in her crate, don't touch her

BiteyShark · 09/05/2017 16:51

aliasjoey mine used to pee when he greeted people. He still does with new people but it is getting less (7 months old)

JustCallMeBaldrick · 09/05/2017 22:11

Soubriquet, I've got 4 children (aged from 3-11), and now the puppy too. You're not alone in being completely mad 😂

SkeletonSkins · 09/05/2017 22:30

alias I have found with my puppy that if he's been holding it for a while, I have to let him out, then let him out for a second wee a few minutes later! Must be because they've held it for a while! We've had that exact scenario a few times so seems like a good sign to me. I wouldn't be embarrassed - dog walkers are used to everything and a piddling dog is probably the least of their concerns! Just maybe prepare them haha!

Well I had a rubbish day at work today (y6 teacher, SATs!!) and came home at lunch time for a little cry and of course to let the dogs out. Sat in the sun with the pup on my knee having a cuddle and things didn't feel so bad. I do absolutely adore having him around - he's just so funny and makes me laugh every day. It all felt worth it today!

Ah that's lovely skeleton, sorry u haven't had the best day Flowers

BiteyShark · 10/05/2017 07:55

Skeleton sitting in the sun with the dog at your feet is the best therapy ever for a bad day.

aliasjoey · 10/05/2017 11:28

skeleton sorry you had a bad day, agree that cuddling a furry bundle of joy is the best medicine

bluetongue · 10/05/2017 11:34

Bluepuppy is currently perched on my shoulder like a cat while I watch Masterchef. Puppyschool again tomorrow. We still don't have sit mastered but doesn't matter. The puppies get to play together tomorrow. Should be interesting Grin

Soubriquet · 10/05/2017 15:11

Oh dear. Had to leave Lexa at home today whilst I popped to the shop.

I was a maximum of half an hour

Apparently that was half an hour too long. She had completely destroyed the inside of her crate and tipped her water bowl everywhere.

Blanket, bed and soft toys now hanging on the line to dry. Madam is fast asleep next to me recovering from her traumatic experience

I do hate having to leave her alone but unfortunately it happens

BiteyShark · 10/05/2017 15:51

Soubriquet you can get water bowls that attach to the crate which will stop them being tipped over although it won't stop the bedding being shoved in them if you want to leave water but not come home to a swimming pool Grin

Soubriquet · 10/05/2017 15:52

Yes I've seen them. Going to get them next time I go to the pet shop.

Thank you though

AmIAWeed · 10/05/2017 16:25

Today has been interesting! We've an area of the garden very easy for Puppydog to escape, so during his nap today I nipped out to get stuff to temporarily fence it until the proper fence is fitted, hes been getting braver running further away from me and it was making me a smidge jumpy.
All went well, reversed car into warehouse, car was filled with fence stuff and then the car wouldnt start. I was stranded blocking the warehouse entrance for over 2 hours until the mechanic arrived, got home and PuppyDog had been on his own almost 3 hours.
I was expecting the worse and yet no wee, no poo.
Opened the door, he ran straight out, did a wee and about 3 poo's in the space of half an hour. Bless his little socks he held it!!!!!
I feel like a horrible mummy but so proud of him

MrsWineasaurus · 10/05/2017 18:34

Right, we've been taking Chase out to do his business every 20 mins, the last two days he's been having accidents despite this. Just now he's had 3 'accidents' between taking him out.

Any advice? X

BiteyShark · 10/05/2017 18:51

MrsWineasaurus I used to stay out with my puppy for a very long time until he was forced to go then went mad on the praise as well as food treats.

I think they would prefer to do it inside so i had to effectively force the issue as he couldn't hold it any longer whilst standing outside. The more they do it in the right place with the over the top praise reinforces what you want them to do.

MrsWineasaurus · 10/05/2017 19:32

biteyshark he's being going when we've taken him outside, I'd feel a little less frustrated if he wasn't.

Been dancing round the garden like a crazy lady when he's done it and giving treats. X

BiteyShark · 10/05/2017 19:42

Ah sorry I misunderstood. Is there any pattern to the accidents (after a snooze, a play etc)?

MrsWineasaurus · 10/05/2017 21:05

I haven't noticed a pattern to be honest, feeling totally stumped at the moment. X

BiteyShark · 10/05/2017 21:20

MrsWineasaurus it will get better. I think something just snaps and they realise that they need to toilet outside but sometimes it can take a while. Mine took several weeks to get it as we kept having accidents but we got there in the end.

SkeletonSkins · 10/05/2017 21:59

It will definitely get better - they hold it longer and get into a routine. If pup doesn't go, I keep hold of them and try it again in about 5 mins. You'll start to spot the signs too like sniffing around certain places. I had trouble with house training st times but he's sorted now so don't feel like accidents mean he'll never get there!! He's still such a tiny baby. How are the nights going?

Awww well done to your pup Iamaweed what a brilliant exeperience for him as well to be left alone and be so well behaved. Brilliant!

Lexa to begin with our puppy was awful being left alone for 5 minutes, he now gets left for 3/4 hours while I work (he's nearly 6 months). We did give up on the crate though and ended up shutting him in the front room where he is most comfortable and that helped a lot.

Best of luck tomorrrow to little bluepuppy! We have puppy class too and have been moved on to the later class so we'll be back to being the worst ones in the class ha!

We now have almost got toilet training down.

She shows signs of asking to out when she needs it.

However now we have tackle mouthing. Puppy teeth are bloody sharp.

I have to keep yelping which shocks her to stop. But then she forgets and does it again

Hoping to get this tackled quickly
