Would you get a rescue dog if you have kids? or a rescue puppy?

Just looking for a bit of advice - starting to think about getting a dog and would love to get one from a rescue place but I have a two year old and almost five year old (also have two housecats) . Would it be best to try to get a puppy from a rescue centre rather than a dog? I haven't called any of my local ones yet but I do know some of them don't know the history of the dog as they have been strays which is why I'm wondering if it would be best to get a puppy if they have any available

Should add, the Dogs Trust also house puppies separately - which I guess most good rescues do. So you are only allowed in to even look at them once you have been put on the Puppy List.

No problem NoBetter for me, I thought having a puppy would be easier than an adult dog, but given dd is very respectful to adult dogs this could actually have been the wrong decision!

I've had four adult rescue dogs with very young children and they've been wonderful.

Research your breed, find a good rescue who will help you through any issues that may arise and be extremely clear with them about your limitations and requirements as an owner.
I know lots of people who have bought puppies and struggled enormously through their early training and adolescence.
The ones who hung on have not all been rewarded with great family dogs either.

Adult dogs are a known quantity and a good rescue should take their time to help you get a really good fit.
Our dogs have made our lives better in every way. My DCs, from teen to toddlers have benefitted enormously and DH and I love them so much.
Good luck!

My children are 10 and 12 so older than yours. We got a rescue puppy who was about 8 months when we got him. I say 'about 8 months' as he was found dumped at a train station in Romania. We didn't meet him prior to getting him but saw lots of photos in which he always displayed positive behaviour.
When we got him, I took my time easing him into life gently and he hasn't looked back. He is amazing with all kids (even toddlers who pull his tail) as well as all dogs. His recall is perfect and he is loved by everyone who meets him.
He wasn't bred for his temperament or physique so I now have a lovely healthy dog with no inherited defects.
He is special and I know we're lucky but rescue pups can make the best dogs.
