Does your dog attract attention?

We're on holiday with the mini hound this week and I can't believe how much attention he has attracted. We keep getting mobbed by kids and adults who all want to stroke him and ask about him. It's lovely and we do get into conversation with all kinds of people, but sometimes it's a bit much when you just want to sit and relax. I'm also a bit Hmm when people pick him up without asking, or give him kisses!

He is quite distinctive, he's a chi X jrt and really tiny, but I'm still surprised how interested people are. Luckily he loves the attention, but he is now getting into the habit of trying to happily approach and greet everyone he sees, because he's used to strangers calling him over and making a fuss.

We have never had this with our other dogs in the past, just wondered if anyone else has this experience?

My dog attracts attention when we are out but its because she's a huge staffie with one eye...not many people compliment her looks!

StupidTuftyTailedFucknut · 03/06/2016 15:12

Yes, my dog gets lots of attention and he loves it! He doesn't much care for children he doesn't know so I do hate it when they run up to him and start hugging him without asking but he always sits politely and is very patient. Occasionally we do get negative comments from people who think it's cruel to shave him but they obviously don't understand the grooming needs of poodles.

It always makes me laugh when people try to guess his breed! When he's scruffy we get the obvious labradoodle but when he's shaved in his summer hair style it's often saluki or bedlington cross. Recently someone guessed greyhound x bichon frise Grin

Becky Haha thanks! They are quite the pair!

Trionic please post a photo of ddog2!

Scone1nSixtySeconds · 03/06/2016 18:07

Yup. SconeSpaniel is generally coo-ed over, although unlike the beautiful cockers ^^ he is a scruff bag!

Mostly people are surprised that he isn't a cross and mention his colour (chocolate roan) and his amazing topknot.

not at all biased

We get that too Stupid Practically every single walk involves somebody guessing her 'breed'. We've had everything from baby Irish Wolfhound to Otterhound, Deerhound, Lurcher and everything in between.

Wincarnis · 04/06/2016 05:32

I have a small Yorkie, he gets lots of attention

MaitlandGirl · 04/06/2016 05:57

Our youngest papillon always gets loads of attention (which he loves as he's a real cuddle whore) as he's very small with very striking markings. He's also got the typical papillon trot with all the fringing, HUGE ears and full plume tail.

Our older papillon gets ignored (which suits him as he's an ignorant little man) as hes got such a heavy coat, with long fringing that we trim his coat to make it more manageable.

Our pit bull cross never gets a look in, which is a shame as he's such a gorgeous boy who loves people but he's nothing special to look at.

Only at the weekends. I live by a stretch on pubs, clubs and bars. Always get stopped by drunk people who act like my dog is the cutest thing ever Grin. She doesn't attract attention any other time. She's old and looks scruffy actually.

MrsHardy1 · 06/06/2016 02:19

RoseDog I used to have a shitzu with one eye, she attracted a lot of attention.

MardAsSnails · 06/06/2016 05:37

My one eyed dog gets lots of attention too.

Also, walking two Dalmatians always gets attention. Usually children shouting 'pongo' and running at them. One of them is very reactive so not a good situation!

I did once get a load of grief on our community Facebook page for 'being miserable and not letting the children play with my dogs' at the Christmas get together in the public areas. A group of around 10 kids, I'd say 10-14 ish, all ran towards me and my dogs squealing about how cute they were. I turned and went back the other way and said, fairly nicely, please keep away, one is aggressive. The guy replied that id ruined his kids day and I should have at least let them stroke them. He didn't react well when I pointed out that if she'd bitten one of them, he would have likely been calling for her to be put down, so why should I potentially risk my dogs life so his PFB could stroke the dog.

blueskyinmarch · 06/06/2016 06:17

My dog does. She is a ridiculously cute yellow lab and kids tend to rush up to her to pat her. Trouble is she is not used to little kids and tends to be a bit 'back off small dude' when confronted. Not aggressive, just avoidant.

I don't mind parents who ask if their child can pat her then we get her to sit and I talk them through how to do it gently and respectfully. I hate kids who just gallop up and lunge in.

Yes, my rescue collie does generally from dog-owners who struggle to control their dog's behaviour. He's effortlessly obedient, understands a huge vocabulary and we can control him from a distance. We didn't make him that way, he came from the rescue 4yrs at 18 months old and he's a dog who is desperate to please us.

That face dotdot so utterly lovely!

1frenchfoodie · 06/06/2016 12:58

Our lab x cocker pup usually gets attention, pats etc. He loves kids but I have to keep a tight lead and sit command going or he'll rush them.

Miaow sounds distinctive - any chance of a pic?

LimeJellyHead · 06/06/2016 19:38

One of our dogs is nearly blind with very obvious cloudy eyes. We are constantly stopped by people who tell us "your dog is blind". I am sure they mean well but really... enough already... we had noticed, lol.

LimeJellyHead · 06/06/2016 19:42

Here she is, little old Stick Smile

Sometimes, he's a rare breed (Glen of Imaal terrier) so occasionally people who recognise the breed will ask about him. He doesn't mind meeting people or other dogs, but he sometimes gets a bit over-excited.

He's a dwarf breed so his proportions are quite odd with very short legs and quite a large body and head, and now and then people ask what sort of weird mix he is. Nobody has ever rushed over to give him a hug though, he's quite big of tooth so people are cautious.

lougle · 06/06/2016 20:13

How could he not?Smile

But it tends to go either way. People either adore him or instinctively cross the road because of his imposing size.

Yes. She is a very pretty white staffy/JRT cross who happens to have a perfect eye patch. She came from a litter of 7, - 4 of whom had the same Jack Russell colouring but she was the only one with an eye patch!

We can't explain why else it is people (women especially) gravitate towards her. She is quite shy and doesn't really like the attention, too much.

I have had staffies in the past and they never got a second glance.

Our last dog was a stunning, Crufts qualified, English Bull Terrier and we gave up even trying to walk her in town as we were stopped every few metres by people wanting to admire her. As a show dog from being young, she loved attention and handled it very well. In the end she just got walked in the lanes and woods round our house, as taking her out was a nightmare. She was a contemporary of our last staffy - he was black and white, (mainly black) and never got a second look, on a walk.

JoffreyBaratheon · 07/06/2016 14:16

Here she is. She is a bit smaller than most staffies so maybe looks less scary.

I've got a five month old mini dachshund and cannot move for admirers. Sometimes I don't mind as it is good for socialising him, he is an attention whore and I'm proud of him. What I do mind is people allowing their kids to pet him without asking - he has a good temperament as far as I can tell but you never know and I wouldn't want anyone to get bitten. My biggest bugbear is - and this has happened twice in a beer garden - when parents think it's okay to let their kids come over and think because I've got a puppy, I'm a babysitter and the parents bugger off.

Oh and people trying to pick him up too, I worry so much about him getting stolen.

A dachshund is not the puppy for you if you are shy or looking to meet men - I get approached by 19 year old girls and gay couples.
