New rescue terrier. I need hand holding

After lots of thought and research we got the most beautiful rescue terrier on Monday. Fostering at the moment. He is a little star. So friendly. Walks nicely. Sleeps well on my bed. Great back-up from rescue. He was fine Monday. Poo normal. He's just been neutered and 1st vaccs. Hasn't eaten much then in last 2 days he's had 3 very runny poos and been sick 4 times. He ate the most since he arrived yesterday. He's now eating plain chicken breast and rice
I'm only giving him tiny amounts. He's been drinking water. He's tiny. Weighed about 5kg but he's lost almost 1kg since. He's perky and tail waggy. Rescue lady visiting him later. So worried about him. He's so lovely

I'm assuming that the vet will have mentioned the issue on his notes however.

TheFlyingFauxPas · 09/02/2016 10:02

Yes. I'm wondering if it's "official" yet.

I think the vet is being a bit over efficient, my working terrier (on our books as pest control) is a bit stiff at 10, but not in his bowed legs, its the back ones that are the problem. If our vet started on with this wed think he'd taken leave of his senses.

Booboostwo · 09/02/2016 11:16

Unfortunately it won't be covered by insurance as it is something you already know about before taking out the cover.

However as you are fostering the rescue should pay for all his medical costs. To be honest I am surprised the rescue's own vet had not noticed the problem when examining him before releasing to foster.

Floralnomad · 09/02/2016 11:21

Well I'm obviously a terrible person because I wouldn't be doing anything until the dog actually had a problem , it can't be that big a deal if the other vet didn't mention it - perhaps get a second opinion before spending any big money . Ok the dog may need an op in the future but equally he may not ,I suppose I'm a cup half full type of person .

TheFlyingFauxPas · 09/02/2016 13:04

Thanks again for all the messages. We're half way through adoption as in I've paid half but we are already completely in love with him and want the best for him. Rescue lady says they'll pay for xrays. I don't know if other vet noticed and wasn't concerned or that they didn't pick up. Maybe they are being a little too thorough but now it's been mentioned I'd rather it be checked out in case any treatment is either needed now or possibly any treatment can be dine to prevent future foreseen problems

Thing is, it could turn out to be nothing! He is cuteness personified! Take out insurance anyway as you never know what else you might need it for and make sure it's 'lifetime cover'.

aginghippy · 09/02/2016 13:40

Looks like he is enjoying the sunshine. My terrier likes to sunbathe too.

IIWY I would get the xrays because I would rather know. See what they say. If he is not in pain or experiencing any problems moving about, you might want to adopt a wait and see approach.

LeaLeander · 09/02/2016 13:46

What a sweet little lamb. Is his tummy better?

TheFlyingFauxPas · 09/02/2016 14:03

His tummy is way better thank you. Lots of lovely pickupable poos 😊 no more sick. Though he's just started antibiotics as his castration wound in a little bit concerning. Hoping this won't upset it again. He is eating keenly which is fab as he was turning his nose up at everything a week ago 😊 can't believe it's actually a joy to pick up his poos after trying to scrape up diarrhoea off the lawn! Hopefully that's all washed away now! I made him some dried liver snacks at the weekend. He loves them. 😊 won't give him too many. Just a treat. Now weathers a bit better we can work at look at me training in garden before trying it out outside. He's only on limited walks at the moment but the number of times I have to bob round fences etc to hide from other dogs!

You know, he has been through so much in such a short period of time. It is great that you are so enthusiastic about everything but if it were me I would just tone everything down to essentials for a couple of weeks until he is fully healed and off meds. Sleep, eat, cuddle, brief bits of fresh air in the garden and that is it.

I fostered two very sickly baby Chihuahuas from 10 weeks on and it took months for them to get on their feet. They are very healthy now but at the time we took it very slowly and let them rest and heal.

Sounds like your pup is in for a wonderful life ahead!

Themodernuriahheep · 09/02/2016 17:52

well, the pic looks v similar to UriahDog, as far I can see. Doesn't impede him save in chasing squirrels. In the meantime he has the life of Riley and is definitely at the top of the Heap family.

TheFlyingFauxPas · 09/02/2016 22:58

Thanks all. Yes Lea there is a lot of chilling going on. He's curled up with me now ready for bed. 😊 all i was planning was trying to tone down this excited barking at other dogs as it makes even a brief scroll around a bit difficult. He gets so excited I struggle to move at all! His ears prick up at the Big Bad Wolf and we nearly fell out for the first time tonight when I missed the first 5 minutes of Happy Valley with mad barking at the dogs on the screen!

3 weeks in. DD is still being a marvellous little star. He's put on weight and eating like a horse 🐴He sleeps well on his own at night until I wake him in the early hours with my hay fever sneezes! he had his 1st sleepover at my mums at that went well. Her garden's huge compared to ours. It must feel like a park. We're off out for our first proper walk today. I'm meeting my cousin with a lovely dog. Hopefully they'll get on 😊 we gave him a bath yesterday as he was filthy. That went well. I bathed him in Matey as we had no dog shampoo, but I won't do it again.

Great to hear that you are getting on so well , what happened about his legs ?

TheFlyingFauxPas · 15/02/2016 23:34

Not investigated further yet. Officially I'm still fostering at the mo. I won't just ignore it. We went for our first proper walk today in woods etc with my cousin and her dog. They got on brilliantly which was such a relief after all the barkiness!

Resideria · 20/02/2016 10:20

Just read through the whole thread, what a lovely story!

Themodernuriahheep · 21/02/2016 10:17

Congrats to all members of the family and a special rub behind the ears for him.

TheFlyingFauxPas · 22/02/2016 22:49

He really is settling in so well 😊 ds and I went away this weekend and he stayed at my mum's and he was fab there too which is great as the plan was to share him with her as she's used to having a dog but doesn't want a whole one now she's getting a little older. His barking at other dogs is getting better now he's able to meet them. We met a lovely pair in the park today. I even let him off the lead for a short time as he stayed with the others 😊
