New rescue terrier. I need hand holding

After lots of thought and research we got the most beautiful rescue terrier on Monday. Fostering at the moment. He is a little star. So friendly. Walks nicely. Sleeps well on my bed. Great back-up from rescue. He was fine Monday. Poo normal. He's just been neutered and 1st vaccs. Hasn't eaten much then in last 2 days he's had 3 very runny poos and been sick 4 times. He ate the most since he arrived yesterday. He's now eating plain chicken breast and rice
I'm only giving him tiny amounts. He's been drinking water. He's tiny. Weighed about 5kg but he's lost almost 1kg since. He's perky and tail waggy. Rescue lady visiting him later. So worried about him. He's so lovely

He had something to eat! Good news and a step in the right direction.

He will be even more gorgeous after the visit to the groomers Smile

Themodernuriahheep · 29/01/2016 14:10

He's lovely. But go to vet and vet may give you expensive super calming food.

Has he been dewormed? Ddog always goes off food and gets d&v when has worms.

ShitFacedTinyTim · 29/01/2016 14:21

If you can't get him to take the medicine, tuck him under your arm with his head facing forwards. Use your elbow to secure him gently but firmly against your body. You can then use the hand of that arm to go underneath his jaw and if you squeeze slightly (don't force it, you are just applying enough pressure to encourage him to open up!) he will open his mouth and you squeeze the paste in with the other hand.

It's not very nice, but it is effective. It's a bit like your mum holding your nose to make you swallow nasty medicine!

ShitFacedTinyTim · 29/01/2016 14:22

PS The vet taught us and it is easier than it sounds written down!

TheFlyingFauxPas · 29/01/2016 14:39

Vet saw him yesterday. He's the one who gave us the medicine. Thanks for tip tinytim. Will try later. Its just that he's been so good about his mouth. Last night I managed to open his mouth and put it on his tongue with my finger!!! Now he knows he clamps his mouth shut and don't want to push it but will see if your method works. Now he's eating a little I'm wondering if I can put it in his food but don't want to put him off eating again if he can smell it. Why isn't it more tempting taste? Maybe the tuna can mask it! Rescue in contact for updates and he will be whipped back to vets if needs be.

Yes he's been wormed 🐶

Oh he is so much brighter today thank goodness. He's much more interested in food. He went to the groomers yesterday and had all his matts cut out. He must be much more comfy 😊 he took it all in his stride. His weight is now going the right way. Not sick since once in car.

Just waiting for him to have a normal poo. Ooh it is so much like having a baby again!

GissASquizz · 30/01/2016 12:38

He's a beaut. Name? More pics!

WaitrosePigeon · 30/01/2016 12:38

Oh he is delightful!

1Q84 · 30/01/2016 12:40

He's a beautiful little doggy - you will bring much love to each other's lives. I am so glad he is feeling better.

Just as a note really, chicken breast always gives my terrier a slightly upset tummy/bowel. Luckily nothing else does as she is a wee gannet.

SweepTheHalls · 30/01/2016 12:42

I find mixing any medicine with peanut butter always goes down well here x

Booboostwo · 30/01/2016 15:32

I would postpone the groomers until he is better.

Keep an eye on him, if he vomits or does diarrhea or is dehydrated I think you should at the very least speak with he vet again.

Booboostwo · 30/01/2016 15:33

Apologies, something went wrong with the thread and I only saw older posts. Glad he's feeling better!

TheFlyingFauxPas · 31/01/2016 02:44

Crikey. Thought we'd turned a corner. Then at bed time about 1 the poor chap pood, several splats, on my bedroom carpet 😞 huge panic
not quite the birthday present 📦 I was hoping for!! Me running around gagging and trying to get him to do it on a towel!
Hours of cleaning up - turns out I'm. Totally unequipped for carpet/dog poo situations! Had to do it with antibac wipes, antibac hand wash and hot water then squirted on a load of that anti bac hand gel on it! Will get something more appropriate tomorrow!

Apart from that he really does seem on the mend! Eating more and more energy.

please don't give your dog peanut butter - aone brands use xylotol as an additive , even tiny amounts are toxic to dogs.

TheFlyingFauxPas · 31/01/2016 12:25

Thanks lem 😊

Ooh he got a bit growly last night and scared me 😞 He was on the settee and I tried to move a cushion. I believe this is pretty common. I remember mum's soft as anything lab would growl if we wanted her off the bed.

So. I think I've completely confused him letting him lie on lots of blankets not just one and then not on one in settee. So will buy him a lovely comfy bed today. Hopefully that'll help him. I was really scared and fended him off with another cushion 😞 but sure it's nothing majorly to worry about. Another poo last night on stairs 😞 going to use my new steam cleaner later...

And If he's still feeling delicate not surprising he was warning me off??

OP posts:
aginghippy · 01/02/2016 10:02

Sometimes growling can mean they are scared, rather than aggressive. You need to look at the tail to be sure - tail pointing up means aggression, tail down means fear.

His own bed sounds like a good idea. As does steam cleaner Wink

TheFlyingFauxPas · 01/02/2016 10:37

Just had our first tradesman visit who sorted our WiFi yay! DD was a little star again while he was here. He was sat on my knee (dd) for a while then when asked him to get off. There was a little growl again. Not as scared of him as I was last night! He's keen to eat his dried food again so will introduce slowly. No sick or poos since last night
fingers crossed 😊

Is his poo still liquid? If yes you need to speak to the vet again.

Are you planning on taking him to training classes? They can be extremely helpful for all kinds of dogs. Find someone who uses positive reward methods and steer away from anyone who talks about dominance and being a leader.

His growling may be pain related in which case the vet should be able to help you. A lot of dogs become intolerant when in pain. Or it may be behavioural. If he does it again don't touch him, go behind the sofa and gently tip it until he drops to the floor, then reward him with a treat for being off the sofa. The last bit is quite important as you want to reward good behaviour whichever way you do it.

Ideally you need some help with him in RL, the internet cannot substitute for a trainer who will see you and your dog in person.

MaynJune · 01/02/2016 10:44

I know someone who rehomed a dog recently and has had the growling problem. In her case, the dog had been much loved but allowed to do whatever he wanted, was fed human food etc.
He seems to have a lovely nature but growls when told to get off the bed or couch.
I haven't seen my friend for a month or so, so will be interested to hear if it's stopped.

One of my previous dogs snarled at first when disturbed accidently or if I tried to remove something from him. He'd been very badly treated in his other home. The snarling happened a few times in the first few months then never again.
