Question about not vaccinating?

SmileAndNod · 29/10/2015 07:40

I always had our old dog vaccinated, wormed, flea treated, insured etc. Never occurred to me to do any other than the vet recommended.

I was speaking to someone this week who hadn't had their dog vaccinated, doesn't worm (but does a worm count in poo) as their dog is healthy. Their research has shown that all the treatment isn't really necessary and vets are just about making moneyConfused

We are (hopefully) getting a pup, which will be vaccinated etc. Would it be ok for the two dogs to play together? Would they be any risk to either of them illness wise ?

Please excuse my ignorance but I've never considered it before.

"they have chosen to vax and therefore protected right? so not selfish at all because it won't affect them right?"

Nope, you get pets with compromised immune systems.

Shriek · 30/10/2015 22:19

how so tabula you are saying that vaxing dpets will protect them? are you saying that vax dpets get compromised immune system or those not vax?

tabulahrasa · 30/10/2015 22:26

No, I'm saying that pets with compromised immune systems exist that either shouldn't be vaccinated or will become ill despite vaccinations...they are put at risk by people who don't want to vaccinate their pets.

Shriek · 30/10/2015 22:34

ok but nevermind the ones that are made ill by owners getting their pets vax.

I can tell this is one-sided and emotive, so no longer constructive.

So OP? anyanswers?

tabulahrasa · 30/10/2015 22:53

I'm not sure how pointing out that an immune compromised pet is at risk from an outbreak is either one sided or emotive...but um, ok.

Shriek · 30/10/2015 23:31

um . .ok.. .'they are put at risk by people who don't vac their pets' um ok...

SmileAndNod · 31/10/2015 05:46

Thanks for all your thoughts, I have been reading very carefully and I can see that this is a very emotive issue, just as whether to get your child vaccinated is.

We have decided we will be getting the pup vaccinated, even though at 8 weeks they are still with mum so should have a good immunity built up. The process of titre-ing and worm counting sounds a bit much for me, though I didn't realize that boosters in some cases are three yearly, so thank you for that. I feel a bit happier to ask the vet questions about the vacc schedule.

We are hopefully going to choose our (be a.gle) puppy this weekend and it should be with us in the next week or so. No

Now to find a vet that we like....

Also consider would it invalidate your pet insurance if you don't vaccinate and your dog becomes I'll

lavendersun · 31/10/2015 07:21

I trust my very pragmatic vet to give Lavenderdog her vaccinations when she needs them. Apart from Lepto which she has every year I couldn't tell you what she has and when Blush.

I do know that at 11 we are on a three or maybe four year programme for whatever else she has.

She has never been in kennels, never had the kennel cough vaccine.

If you think that the KC is bad you should try owning horses!

lavendersun · 31/10/2015 07:21

Must add that I don't insure anything four legged so have no idea what difference it would make to that though.

Lonecatwithkitten · 31/10/2015 07:48

I'm not certain how the KC got involved they have zero stance on vaccination, but then they try not to get involved in health matters hence why no health schemes are compulsory to register puppies.
GCCF are completely the opposite.

Cheerfulmarybrown · 31/10/2015 09:12

Non vaccination does not invalidate insurance - urban myth but treatment for parvo etc will obviously be exempt

EasyToEatTiger · 31/10/2015 20:17

I vaccinate and take advice from our lovely vet about parasites. The old Frontline/Drontal combo no longer has the same efficacy. But I'm not a biologist or a chemist or a scientist of any kind. Some insurances are certainly invalidated by lack of vaccination. It's not an urban myth. Read the contract to make sure. I don't vaccinate for kennel cough as we don't use kennels. But it can be rife if you take your dog to shows where lots of other dogs are present.

I talk to the vet and the dogs get the vaccinations they need.

I don't think it should be an emotive issue. Vaccines are amongst the safest medicines and the risk of vaccinating is much, much smaller than the risk of the alternative. But hey, we humans are pretty crap at risk evaluation.

Greyhorses · 31/10/2015 20:42

The risks of vaccination are miniscule, I have never seen a dog die or even been very ill from a vaccine reaction and I have vaccinated thousands of dogs.

I have however seen countless die from parvo, young and old and almost all unvaccinated.

I vaccinate my own dogs as I couldn't cope with the heartbreak of loosing them from preventable disease.
