....just been told I should lock my dog away or tie her up if someone comes to my house who doesn't like/is scared of dogs!

Do any of you do this?

I never would have known that there were so many dog-phobes but for MN. It's in real life, too, makes me sad when frantically people pull their dog away because they just assume that strangers probably don't like dogs :(.

There's something about Tinternet that brings out extremes, OP.

Hakluyt · 01/05/2015 08:24

You don't have to be a dog-phobe not to like dogs very much and not to want to be licked, for example. I don't like being licked by my own dog- never mind other people's!

LastOneDancing · 01/05/2015 08:41

I think dog owners forget that non-dog owners don't understand how loved and precious their pets are.
A NDO might think it's a reasonable expectation to remove a jumpy, licky dog, where the DO might think 'how can you be so cruel?'

The baby/dog comparison upthread for example. To me (not a dog owner, never will be) that makes no sense - an animal and a baby are completely different, with totally different needs. But to a dog owner, that's obviously a fair comparison.

Not All Dog Owners Are Like That.

Some of us are rational beings

Koalafications · 01/05/2015 09:22

Yes, LastOne, I don't think my dog has the same rights as a baby.

IME, dogs that are treated as humans can be really quite aggressive...

Hakluyt · 01/05/2015 09:25

Derail- - as you were.

LastOneDancing · 01/05/2015 10:00

Sorry Hakluyt and Koala (and all other non-baby comparing dog owners) let me rephrase...

For some dog owners it's obviously a fair comparison Smile

I have a friend who has 7 child substitutes spaniels. It's hell in her house. Utter, utter hell. But she loves it.

If there's a dog in an armchair you have to go and get a dining chair to sit on. And if they ask for some of her dinner she feeds them from her fork.

gleegeek · 01/05/2015 10:24

I do wonder sometimes if there is a geographical issue to dog liking/loathing. My friend was bemoaning the huge number of dogs near her and how her dc were terrified of going to the park/local shop because they might meet a dog. It wasn't until I went to visit (Somerset) that I discovered they really did have a problem in her area with free roaming dogs and owners not in control of their dogs. We went out for Sunday lunch at a decent quality pub but couldn't sit in the garden as there were 2 dogs roaming around Hmm and her dc were too scared to go out there.

Where I live (home counties), this doesn't seem to happen. Yes there are lots of dogs, but they all seem to come attached to an owner or under decent control. I don't recognise the dog poo situation either...

I love dogs and enjoy visiting friends with dogs. I wouldn't expect them to remove their dogs for me unless I was seriously afraid or allergic. But then I enjoy being buried under a pile of fur Grin

Koalafications · 01/05/2015 10:52

Thank you Hakluyt I'm glad my NN cheers you up Smile

Koalafications · 01/05/2015 11:01

gleegeek that's a good point.

There isn't a dog issue where I live either. I live on a path that takes people down to a field which is mainly used by dog owners and I don't ever see any dog mess, all dogs are on a lead. When I walk waddle past they all PUL theirs dogs to one side (the path is very narrow)

Maybe some areas have a higher concentration of twatty owners.

tomatodizzymum · 01/05/2015 13:06

I second the twatty owners. Where I live everyone has a dog and there are lots of strays too (one mayor hired a dog warden but no one ever called him so the idea was scrapped). It's a pavement eating culture and they NEVER approach or beg, there is no shit in the streets and no one or pet dog is in any danger of attack from them. They even come around our farm where we have free range chickens.

Where I lived before (London) it was hell. Every walk was a shit dodging excersise. There was a local cafe in the park that was out of control. Dogs in and out and wondering around the tables (not one or two...try 10-15), that''s where my son got his phobia when my friends's then 2 year old was nipped (that child is also phobic) when quized the owner said "No he loves children, I have two of my own". Beggers belief! I love dogs but living in London made me very anti-dog owners.

I am always surprised so many people have dogs, especially in towns. Where I live you are constantly avoiding the dog turds on the pavement, the river walk stinks and kids have to march in a line because there is dog shit everywhere, and dog owners irresponsibly let their dog lose, who sniff my children who are quite small, so they shriek, so the dog gets excited and yaps and the dog owner goes "oh it is really friendly". Maybe, but its head is at the same height as my 4 year old's head, it had got to be scary having an excitable jumping barking thing so close.

Focusfocus · 06/06/2015 05:49

We are quite clear. Our 5 kg Shih Tzu cross is our family. Genuine fear, we will try to meet elsewhere. Plain dislike - goes both ways then again try to meet elsewhere. A lady saw my sleeping dog (pic attached) and asked what if she leaps up and rips out my windpipe? That is her issue, truly.
