Can I please have your dog food recommendations?

My dog has been on Arden Grange for 5 months now but she seems to have gone off it and won't even go near her bowl when I give it to her. She's not off food though as she is more than happy to have meat/ eggs/ steal my food from my plate.

So I was just wondering whether you could recommend me something else? I know that she would love to eat raw but it looks like it costs a fortune, as everywhere I've looked requires organic everything. Also there's the whole storage/ knowing how much to give issue.

I'm planning to use Millie's Wolfheart on our next pup. I've heard very good things about it. I don't really fancy the faff that goes with raw and I also also have small children in the house. My old dog used to like a cheap kibble that our garden centre sold. Don't think it was the best stuff but he liked it and got on well with it.

This is a good site for reviews and honest opinions of just about every dog food available.

Gentle dog food seems expensive but lasts an age. I use it in conjunction with a raw diet from Nature's Menu

I used All About Dog Food to do some research but swapping to Gentle and raw from James Wellbeloved hasn't cost us any more money and at least my dog will eat, she had been losing weight on JW as she wouldn't eat it.

Our two year old lab has been on Millies Wolfheart Countryside Mix and Salmon & Veg for about 18 months. Good quality proteins, grain free, British sourced food, reasonably priced for the quality (especially if you bulk buy) & excellent customer service. A wide range of varieties to suit various tastes and exercise levels. Online delivery only.

Tried Eden, another highly rated food, for a couple of months first but it gave him very loose poo and terrible wind (google shows this to be a fairly common problem for some dogs with Eden). Within 2-3 days on Millies and that was fixed.

Thank you. I shall look into those.

How long would you say those foods last you?

OP posts:
SmartAlecMetalGit · 15/04/2015 11:23

I feed my lot MWH and a 14.5kg bag of the Countryside Mix lasts my three whippets just over a month.

aleto · 15/04/2015 12:37

We feed our 9 month old lab Millie's Wolfheart. A 12kg bag lasts him just over a month. It would depend on the size of your dog and their age as to how quickly you get through a bag.

Queenofknickers · 15/04/2015 13:06

We were recommended James Wellbeloved. Dog seems to prefer cats Iams though...

dillite · 15/04/2015 13:19

I have a shih-tzu, she's 5.2kg and is on 80g of Arden Grange as per vets recommendation plus a few snacks. Her 12kg bag has lasted her more than 3 months now, especially since she's started refusing it. I will see if I can get sample sized bags of the mentioned feeds so that she can choose which one she prefers. Don't want to spend £££ only for her to refuse it.

Millies Woflheart do sample sized (200g) bags of their foods for in the region of £1.50-£2.00.

TipseyKisses · 15/04/2015 13:28

We also use Millie's Wolfheart for our lab & french Bulldog .

Great ingredients , customer service A* , solid output , great coats & happy dogs !

We tried many brands with our previous dog ( welsh foxhound ) & had problems with all of them , luckily no problems with Millie's !

triballeader · 15/04/2015 15:59

For my horrible sensitive white staffy/bully cross.

I use 3 packs of Natures Diet per day [except the fish ones as they really upset her stomach] and Burns Fish Pouch [Which does not - weird dog]
She is a very active heavy dog who also has a scant handful of terrier biscuits as she loves the crunch.
Tried a range of good quality kibbles which she either did not take to and refused to eat or reacted to and broke out in itchy lumps and stomach problems.
Shelled egg couple of times a week and Fish4Dogs mini sea jerky cubes and home cooked slithers of roast meat as training bribes.

Hi, very fussy Pom loves Applaws, I buy on line from Viovet, find its cheaper than Pets at Home

Angelface5 · 15/04/2015 22:06

Always woundered what applaws was like. I fed raw, can't beat it my dogs stools are small and solid her teeth are lovely and it is what she is meant to eat and always loves it.
It's really easy once you have a read or if you don't want to do it yourself you can buy it all done which is great, best I have found is called nutriment. And I bet it would work out cheaper than all kibble and dog meat as I found out,and you are giving the best diet you can.

knackeredknees44 · 15/04/2015 22:10

Have you come across fish4dogs. You can get a sample pack of lots of their products for a few pounds and my dog has loved them all. It is mail order and the delivery service is excellent. It has calmed her down and her digestion is great now.

Sparklepup · 15/04/2015 22:27

Have you tried different flavours of Arden grange? Mine used to get fed up, but started alternating between chicken and lamb for a couple of weeks at a time and she's quite happy now

purplemeggie · 15/04/2015 22:47

We feed raw and we get it online, much cheaper than commercial dog food (our dog is huge and eats a kilo of meat every day, and we feed him for about £1.50 a day). It's perfectly good meat, but cuts that people don't generally eat like chicken necks and wings, tripe, heart etc., Our dog is in beautiful condition and has really clean teeth because of crunching the chicken bones (which are safe raw, it's only once they've been cooked and turn splintery that you can't feed them.)

here's the website. They come from Suffolk so you'll need to check if they can deliver to you. DH does all the ordering, and he says that the best way to order is to send a text message to their mobile number saying that you want to order, and then to email an order because the guy doesn't always check his emails.

WasWildatHeart · 15/04/2015 23:09

Eden has been brilliant for our dog. She has epileptic cramping and since starting on Eden 18 m ago she has only had one minor episode. Her coat is glossy, teeth good and she is in great shape.

EasyToEatTiger · 16/04/2015 20:20

Our dogs have done well on Burns for the past 15 or so years. We now feed CSJ to put on weight. If the boot suits....

LittleMilla · 16/04/2015 21:16

We had our 1yo lab on nature's way but moved him to iams adult as his poos were SO loose. Just seemed almost too good!?

iams he's doing OK but DH are convinced it must multiply in his tum as he's shitting at least three times what goes in!! Shock seriously, we cannot fathom how he manages to do four mahoosive, yet fairly solid, craps every day. Staggering.

So can I ask about poo volume on the Millie's? Grin

dillite · 16/04/2015 22:05

Got some Evolution naturally from pets at home today as they didn't have any of the mentioned foods and ordered some MWH online so will see how it goes. She literally swallowed Evolution this evening- it was venison, I would have also. So far so good, no negative reactions.

Speaking of poos- Charlie does up 4-6 large, very firm poos a day. She shits more than she eats.

Oh, I was wondering- although she's still a pup she's at her adult size- should I still be sticking to puppy food or is it ok to switch to adult?

MoltenBrownChocolate · 16/04/2015 22:21

Can I hijack this thread to ask if it's possible to feed kibble some days and raw on others? I'm not organised enough to feed raw every day. Also is there a way of feeding raw that makes them eat more slowly (currently use a treat ball or stuffed Kong for the kibble)
