Picking up new pup????????

EasyToEatTiger · 04/02/2015 20:08

We will take a crate with us, but probably not use it unless we have to. I think it would be more appropriate to leave the other dogs at home. So... is this right? What about getting home? How to introduce the pups to the dogs here? We have always had everyone with us when we have come home with a new dog, but we have always had relatively adult dogs who have been vaccinated and are as safe as they can be. With a puppy???

You need this, the Happy Puppy Handbook. Even if you've had puppies before it's a good read. Covers just about everything. Smile

EasyToEatTiger · 05/02/2015 11:04

Thanks MrAdorabelle! Will buy that book!

It's really good. We're hoping to have a new pup in the spring. We lost our old boy just before Christmas. You probably know that, I've seen your name on lots of threads I've been on. Grin So I've armed myself with some reading material. It came highly recommended on here too. I've also bought her other book, Total Recall, which I think is mainly about actual recall training but also briefly covers a few other behavioural and training aspects.

Shall we compare notes in the wee small hours when we're being kept awake? Grin

EasyToEatTiger · 05/02/2015 11:52

Lets!Grin It's ridiculous and slightly out of the blue to be getting a pup so soon although I have been on dog/pup watch for some months now. I have not looked after a pup since my mum's bitch had a litter nearly 20 years ago! The youngest dog we have taken on arrived with us at 6 months, completely out of control, untrained, but luckily socialised, at least with children. 2 of our dogs had appalling starts in life, one puppy farm, pet shop, family, loony bin, then us, and the other generally abused, loony bin then us. Our oldie has always been straightforward and a joy. So... this time it's up to us!!

Blimey, I shouldn't think there's much you can't deal with! Shock Grin

We're on the waiting list of a lovely dog that I heard about from another lovely MNer. I messaged the owner of the dog today. She's got about three weeks to go. Very exciting! Won't be ready to go home till end of April-ish, so you'll be a little ahead of me. I shall therefore look to you for some good advice! Grin

EasyToEatTiger · 05/02/2015 14:39

What breed?

OP posts:
EasyToEatTiger · 05/02/2015 15:32

Just contacted trainer. It's really difficult round here to socialise dogs.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 05/02/2015 19:03

Labrador. No decent puppy classes near you?

EasyToEatTiger · 05/02/2015 19:29

There is a brilliant trainer locally. I just hope she has room for us!

Omg! That's two days away!! How excited are you?! Grin

What breed is it? Boy or girl? Names?

EasyToEatTiger · 06/02/2015 11:20

Another border collie. We're calling her Aurora. She's registered with the vet and I've been in touch with the lovely trainer. Just a bit AAAAggggh about the state of our front garden. She won't be allowed in the back until she's had her jabs because of the chickens! Bring on the chicken wire!Grin

Chicken wire solves a multitude of problems.

I want pictures asap! Grin

I would leave all other dogs at home when collecting.

Bring the puppy home on the passengers lap with newspaper, towel and vet bed if cold.

If you can bedding from the breeder to let your dogs get used to the smell before you bring the puppy home (May be too late for this now) also to help the puppy feel comfortable in your house.

Se aside the next few weeks to socialise socalise and socalise. As you know you will need to go gently with a collie and be prepared to back away if things are too much. But you will have to get out and about every day for the next few weeks.

Visit the vet - often
Sit and watch the traffic
Meet as many people as you can - there does not have to be interaction just meet as many different people, old people, people in hats, young people, men wheel chairs, buggys , crying babies, laughing people, loud people still people umbrellas, walking frames etc
Go to a school and watch from a distance

Sit outside cafes, pubs
Walk with livestock
Go on a bus
Go to the train station
Farmers markets
Teaching to relax in busy environments

Watch noises introduce to gently bangs, rustles of bags, birds (reward no reaction to bird noise, loud lorries dustcarts etc)

and of course basic training.........you have a busy and fun few weeks ahead please lets see some pictures

Change things in your house eg put the ironing board upside down, move your dust bins etc Collies can get freaked by the smallest change so get them used to change and how to react to it

Love the name Grin

EasyToEatTiger · 06/02/2015 20:24

Thank you so much everyone for your support. I'm beginning to feel a little bit excited about a new arrival. We can't bring anything home from the breeder (too late but I know what you mean). Yes we will do a lot of socialising. I have spoken to the teachers at our local school and pup may be able to visit with me and the teachers. I will contact someone we know who keeps sheep. Not much livestock round here and none of our other dogs are interested. But this is not the same. I have booked onto a puppy training club. The trainer is excellent and is involved with helping reactive dogs and does lots of clicker training, Ttouch and therapeutic work. She has helped us before.

I think it will really flag up our other dogs' behaviour. We live in organised chaos and I won't be able to complain when if things get chewed!

I still haven't gone public because I still feel a pang of guilt about getting a puppy. Dh says puppies need a safe home to grow up in the same as rescue dogs. I will believe it when Aurora (Rora) arrives home!

Pictures please! Grin

EasyToEatTiger · 08/02/2015 20:04

She's home!! A bit of crying in the car - Slow down! What's that horrible noise?? Where am I?
She hasn't been upstairs. I don't think she can climb yet, so that's that. The other dogs have been curious. Everyone has had lots of treats. Crap photos so far! She's starting to play. She's been out in the garden but doesn't know what it's for. She's in the kitchen in her snuggly place. Vet bed is good to rip apart! She's also gathered a little pile of comfort wellies, socks and bits to chew on. Ho hum! We obviously haven't fed her enough so she's eating her bowl Grin

Aww Tiger congratulations! A new fluffy furry baby! Grin

She looks lovely. Let us know how you get on. What are you feeding her on?

EasyToEatTiger · 08/02/2015 20:57

She's been on Burns Puppy food. Our youngest boy is on the same because he's skinny!

OP posts:
muttynutty · 08/02/2015 21:38

Oooooooh how cute - what a fabby collie - enjoy her. Grin not jealous at all, if I say it enough..........

EasyToEatTiger · 08/02/2015 21:41

I'm a little nervous that all the dogs will get on. Our youngest boy lacks confidence, simply because he was treated as vermin as a pup. He is a lovely boy. At the moment, he's quite nervous of the pup. Early days.

OP posts:
muttynutty · 08/02/2015 21:51

Give your dogs yummy treats when the puppy is around - they will soon realise he is good to have around.

It can take time but that is normal - The puppy may give your young lad some confidence

EasyToEatTiger · 08/02/2015 22:08

They have all been eating sweets as though they were going out of fashion! Young boy has been creeping around sniffing her. To start with his hackles came up, but a little while later he is calmer. I really hope he will enjoy having a younger bitch to play with, and I hope when his nose is back in joint he will become more confident!

How's it going Tiger? Has she settled in?
