Thinking of getting a British bulldog pup. Need opinions.

We currently have a pekinese dog. We have been living with MIL for the last year and are about to move out but during this time, our dog has grown awfully attached to MILs dog and FIL wants to keep him. We are happy to do this as it would be awful to separate them after all this time.
But DC would be gutted. We have been looking into getting another dog and I have fallen in love with a British bulldog pup. I have done a fair bit of research about their temperament etc and it seems they are lovely dogs to have around children (our DCs are 3 and 4).
I work school hours. I'm concerned about leaving him at home all this time. This was never a problem with our other dog as MIL looked after DS while I worked in our house so the dog had company all day. DS is in school now so this wouldn't happen with a new dog.
Any advice would be hugely appreciated

U2 there is a degree of risk with any anaesthesia. Bulldogs are especially at risk at the beginning of the procedure as on their backs, asleep = difficulty breathing and getting enough oxygen. So until you intubate them they are at heightened risk. Again at the end, ideally you want to be removing the animal from oxygen as it wakes up. Also removing the tube - because bulldogs have breathing issues When asleep anyway it just exacerbates things.

Don't let this put you off having her spayed. She will be far more of an anaesthetic risk with a womb infection. Your vet will monitor your dog closely and although there is higher risk it is manageable.

Dinnaeknow explains it better than i do.

This thread has been very educational. Thank you.

I didn't know that British Bulldogs suffered from so many problems Sad and I had no idea that you could teach rabbits to do tricks (as opposed to using them in magic tricks which looks horrible)

, it's got annoying music, but the rabbits are great Smile

They're lovely eh? You just clicker train them exactly like you would a dog.

Thank you for that information, very insightful and quite worrying.

Thanks for taking the time to explain it to me and not just flaming me for owning one :)

U2 I wouldn't flame you! I have never met a nasty one but the KC should act regarding them IMO.
The thing is, if you look at all the old photos of John Bull and his four square canine friend, the dog actually has a proper muzzle and looks more like a meaty staffie crossed with an oak coffee table, not the front heavy squashed up nightmare they are today.

What Lem said about getting her spayed. Lessens the risk of breast cancer and pyometra is also life threatening. Just make sure on the day, the vet/nurse combo are wise. Can't imagine a world without dogs!
