Hip Dysplasia

My nearly 14 year old black lab has recently been diagnosed with hip dysplasia. The vet has offered the option of surgery but I feel she is too old to put her through an op. She is currently on Rimadyl once a day and Pardale V twice a day but is still limping. I am waiting for the vet to call back so I can discuss surgery vs long term pain management but wondered if anyone could recommend any particular anti inflammatories or other pain relief I could ask for? Also, any alternative treatments - I understand glucosamine is good but not sure which brand to go for. Thanks.

Can't help with pain relief but the supplements I see recommended over and over are Yumove and Riaflex

Yumove is what I use for my dog's elbow dysplasia.

The pardale v can be given 3 times a day, well mine gets it every 8 hours anyway.

Weight is massively important, you want her verging on underweight really.

You could ask about hydrotherapy...I don't know if it's useful for hips, you also get acupuncture and massage if you think they might be worth trying.

Thanks people. I am going to check out the supplements. My friend has recommended an acupuncturist so am going to try that too.
Tabularasa - thanks, I didn't realise I could give Pardale 3 times daily.

Obviously talk to your vet, but 3 times a day is how it was prescribed for mine.

You might want to get a blood test for liver function done though given her age.

Also, tramadol can be given on top of pardale v and NSAIDS.

Tabula - you are right. I checked the bottle and it does say every 8 hours.

Oh I forgot salmon oil, I give that as well as the yumove.

One of my friends uses a http://www.bioflow.co.uk/Bioflow-Pet-Collars-Bioflow-Pets/b/3082332031 bioflow collar as well...personally I'm not convinced on them, but a lot cheaper than other alternative treatments as it's only a one off cost.

I've also been meaning to look into cartrophen injections but I don't know if my dog can have them as he's no longer allowed NSAIDs - cartrophen isn't an NSAID, but they're not recommended together and I don't know why.

bioflow collar

Try that again...

Canshopwillshop · 22/08/2014 21:45

Thanks again. Collars look interesting. A friend of mine says that you can use human glucosamine supplements for dogs which are much cheaper. Might have a look into it.

The yumove costs me £33 for 300, which lasts me about 3 months - the dosage is different depending on size of dog, I have a rottie.

So not expensive really.
