Poppy update

Some of you may remember Poppy, a spaniel cross husky, that was owned by a mumnetter earlier this year. The owner had adopted her through Facebook and was looking for advice (which she actually chose not to take).

Through a series of strange co-incidences (it's a small world) I've heard about Poppy more recently. It seems that things went from bad to worse with that owner, and it culminated with Poppy biting a man's hand so badly that he needed to go to A&E for stitches.

(The owner was at a garage and Poppy got out of the car and was loose. A man grabbed her to bring her under control and that's when Poppy bit him.)

Poppy was then booked in to be put down, as the owner said no rescue would take a dog that had bitten.

However Poppy was rescued by someone with a kennels and he managed to get Poppy there before the vet's appointment at 3pm.

Poppy is still there, but isn't getting much training I don't think. They are looking for a new home for Poppy but obviously aren't an experienced rescue. I'm so worried that Poppy will end up in yet another home (her fourth) which won't be able to meet her needs and help her adjust.

Any ideas on how we could help?

I just can't get Poppy out of my head, but know that we are not the right family to give her a new home.

I hate how these dogs just get passed from pillar to post :(

PS I can PM anyone who's interested the number of the kennels. It's down south.

She was in the boot of the car and the two kids were in the back of the car, I locked the car and walked about 50 yards away to a cash machine which was playing silly buggers so as I was queuing up to use another one my son (who KNOWS not to do this) got out of his seat and into the front seat, he pulled the latch on the door which opened it (it was a relatively new car and we didn't know it did this) and Poppy who had never done this either jumped across, attached to her lead, into the front and out the door.

It was a shit situation but there you go, I know what Poppy is like with men so I would never have knowingly put her in a position where she was going to be approached by one, she had a yellow ribbon on from the vet (not that anyone knows what that means seemingly) and I was trying to get her used to more and more slightly public places on the lead with me.

I wish many things had happened differently that day but that is how they happened.

huskiesinneed · 11/06/2014 16:17

I'm Beth. I run Huskies in Need rescue charity.

What can I say but ......WOW!

The dog bit through fear. If a dog is put in a position that it cannoy escape from it will attack. Hence the bloke getting bitten......BUT this wouldnt have heppened if the dog had been secured in the car in the first place.

The rescue Blize is run by one of my ex fosterers who has no experience in behaviour problems and her only qualifications are from an online course.

We have no room so are unable to take her in at the moment but I can go to the kennels and assess the dog.

If she had all her adult teeth in March she was way older than 5 or 6 months. More like 9 months.

This dog has been failed by all its humans. Poor animal. Seeking help on a forum is wrong on all levels. Taking a dog with unkown history and not assessed by a professional when you have kids is just stupid and an accident waitong to happen. Thank god your child wasnt hurt.

Can someone please let me know where this dog is please?

Beth

But we WERE going slowly, we were walking her less because we had be advised to (although the woman at Blize said it was fine to walk her more) we were starting to take her down to the vet to just sit and be there so she would be less scared. We only had her for 4 weeks remember so we just didn't have the time to work on her loads and loads. We were just taking things as they came and getting as much advice as we could, lots of it IS conflicting though and as I previously stated, I was not going to tell the lovely woman from a charity who came to see me and managed to calm Poppy down very quickly that I was going to ignore her advice and listen to lots of different ideas from the internet.

Lilcamper · 11/06/2014 16:19

She's here apparently Beth.

Funnyfoot · 11/06/2014 16:20

I believe the dog is here Beth.

I really hope you can help her.

dontjustjudge · 11/06/2014 16:21

I posted the link to her kennels earlier, called the Clearway Kennels in salisbury

Funnyfoot · 11/06/2014 16:21

oops x post.

dontjustjudge · 11/06/2014 16:21

X post, I see FF has learnt the art of copy and paste.

Lilcamper · 11/06/2014 16:21

Had you bothered to read the reply on the Dog Training Advice page, it was actually from a qualified experienced professional. Not just. A 'lovely lady from the charity'.

huskiesinneed · 11/06/2014 16:22

Thankyou ladies.

I will ring them tomorrow and arrange a visit.

dontjustjudge · 11/06/2014 16:23

Again, our behaviourist techniques did NOT cause Poppy to bite, she had issues before we got her.

I am glad we took her on, I am glad she didnt end up in a dog fight or whatever else the 'two guys from the pub' planned to do with her.

I just hope she finds a good home from here.

Funnyfoot · 11/06/2014 16:24

If you can Beth please keep us posted.

I realise the outcome for this dog may not be a happy one but all the same Smile

Funnyfoot · 11/06/2014 16:25

Really don't you are becoming petty. Yes I can copy and paste wohoo I will learn to do links like this if it helped the poor dog.

Lilcamper · 11/06/2014 16:25

She WASN'T a behaviourist and had no business giving behavioural advice. If you had someone qualified in, Poppy would not now have a bite history.

huskiesinneed · 11/06/2014 16:36

Ladies. I deal with owners like this everyday. The dog is an assett not a member of the family. The dogs should not have been put into a position to bite, but this will never be the owners fault.

I will go and assess Poppy. I will see if I can get her placed somewhere as we are full. But there are so many dogs who need special help.due to human ignorance that it may be a long shot!

I would like to know what Gemma from Blize said.....

needastrongone · 11/06/2014 16:39

The lady from the charity, as Beth mentions above, did not look qualified to give advice, which is why it was important that the professional was qualified, as Sally Bradbury is, highly so. And a member of the APDT, as they will only use positive, modern, kind training methods. And none of the leader of the pack/dominance shite that is out there Smile. I can't remember what she said but was along these lines I think?

Please please read and learn from Beth's post.

dontjustjudge · 11/06/2014 16:52

Feel free to contact Gemma from Blize, she did a homecheck.

enormouse · 11/06/2014 17:14

I'm so glad to see things have moved on and huskiesinneed have been in touch. Fx for a good outcome for Poppy.

huskiesinneed · 11/06/2014 17:21

"I went for an hour because she wanted some training. I offered some. But dog had attacked a guy in a car park so she didnt want to know"

This is what I just received from Gemma at Blize.

Lilcamper · 11/06/2014 17:23
Hmm
dontjustjudge · 11/06/2014 17:26

I met with Gemma for around 2 hours and we put some things in place, before she could come back again the dog attacked but we were in constant phone contact and she advised me against rehoming the dog.

All turning into Chinese whispers now

dontjustjudge · 11/06/2014 17:28

She said when the dog bit someone that Blize could no longer help us, I have the messages

If you want to talk about Poppy, Beth, rather than plastering all this on Mumsnet, send me your number and I will call you this evening

huskiesinneed · 11/06/2014 17:31

I have no interest in talking to you. Poppy is not owned by you and I have read your posts on here when you hear sonething you dont like. Id rather not have to have that abuse thanks.

muttynutty · 11/06/2014 17:34

Guys this thread is becoming very unpleasant and not helping anyone.

Can we stick to just using it if more help is needed with Poppy? Personal slanging matches are achieving nothing.

Huskiesinneed can you let us know if you are unable to help and then we can increase the search for other rescues.

huskiesinneed · 11/06/2014 17:36

I have no room. But I will go to kennels and assess her. I will then share her with other rescues and see if we can get her sorted.
