She will be fine in kennels won't she?

I am trialling my 2 year old lab for an overnight in kennels on Saturday. I need her to go in for a few nights at the end of June so my parents, who normally have her, can come to DD1's graduation with us.

I feel really strange about putting her in kennels as she has always stayed with family. The lady is lovely, and it is a small, new kennels and she loves other dogs/people.

I know she will be fine but she is my baby. what a wuss i am

Look, I'm not going to just come on and say yes, because some dogs are and some dogs aren't. But, trialling is absolutely the right thing to do and if you feel that she found it distressing, you have time to look for a home boarder.

littlewhitebag · 15/05/2014 12:03

spicypear You are absolutely right. I have a contact for a home boarder if this doesn't work out.

I really hope it does though as these kennels are really close to my home and it would be so great to have somewhere i could leave her with complete confidence.

Fab - I wasn't meaning to sound so negative by the way. Some dogs do just fine .

moosemama · 15/05/2014 12:36

I hope she takes to it ok. Mine have always gone to kennels when they weren't able to go somewhere with us and usually dragged us in there as soon as we let them out of the car they like it so much. I still worry about them every single time though.

My pup is due to go in for the first time at the end of the month and I am already fretting about it. He's been for a visit, met the staff, had a gallop around the paddock and was fine. The only thing he wasn't keen on was the other dogs barking as he walked past their kennels to reach the paddock. He'll be with our older boy, who's been there loads of times before and knows the ropes, so I'm hoping he'll be ok, but will still be annoying them with regular phonecalls to see how he is.

I am exactly the same about my dogs, you are bound to worry, but as SpicyPear says, if she hates it, you can always bring her home and look into either home or pet boarding instead.

ExitPursuedByABear · 15/05/2014 12:40

My dog always looks as miserable as sin in kennels. We rarely used them preferring to send him to a lady we know. But she has her own dog now so we can't do that anymore.

He survives though.

littlewhitebag · 15/05/2014 12:47

No exit That is the WRONG response! You need to tell me your dog loves kennels and mine will be the happiest dog in the world while she is there. Grin

coffeeinbed · 15/05/2014 12:50

Well, if we tell you she'll absolutely love it there and will have the time of her life and won't miss you a bit, won't you be upset then?
Grin

Give it a try, don't worry too much.
It's a good age to get her used to it.

moosemama · 15/05/2014 13:18

I do get offended when I take mine and they can't wait for me to leave them there - but I suppose that is what we want really.

Honestly littlewhitebag, all but one of mine have loved kennels and the one that didn't was fine until she was really old and like her home comforts and peace and quiet a bit too much.

SnakeyMcBadass · 15/05/2014 15:22

My spaniel is kennelled when we travel. He loves it. Drags us from the car to greet the kennel owner who feeds him gravy bones. He comes home knackered after being trained with her other gun dogs, and usually filthy from barrelling through mud :)

ExitPursuedByABear · 15/05/2014 15:24

And where is this spaniel Nirvana?

At the kennel I reluctantly use they get 15 minutes exercise a day.

Sad
PurpleFrog · 15/05/2014 15:42

Ooh - littlewhitebag - I'm marking my place to find out how your dog gets on. [I realised a while ago that you are not a million miles away from me.] Our lab is nearly 4 and we have never left him with anyone else... yet, but really want to find a nice kennels in case of family emergencies etc..

Amy106 · 15/05/2014 15:59

My elderly retriever loves the kennels so much that he catapults himself out of the car when we open the door and sprints to reception like a young pup, tail wagging furiously. A trial run is a good idea though to find a kennel that is right for you and your dog. Good luck and try not to worry.

littlewhitebag · 15/05/2014 16:07

Ooh purplefrog Where are you? Use code if you don't want others to know!!! Grin

I used to worry endlessly about this until there was a time we had to put the dogs in kennels for a whole month. Yes, they probably had a miserable time, but as soon as they got home they were right back to normal and happy as anything, with no side effects after the first day home at all.

It might sound heartless written down, but they're dogs. And, as much as I love mine with all my heart, staying in a good kennel a couple of times a year is not going to hurt them in the long run.

ExitPursuedByABear · 15/05/2014 16:08

You can always pm each other.

littlewhitebag · 15/05/2014 16:09

I'm also curious to know how you knew where i live? I didn't think i ever said anything specific enough to give it away! Not that i am worried about this - i just tend to keep my posts very general.

Good idea exit

Hi I work in a kennels, it's for a specific breed of dog but it is a holiday kennels as well as breeding etc. I have worked there for 6 years.

The owners of dogs are always nervous exactly like you but I can assure you that most dogs are completely fine, some of them that come in actually enjoy it :o as well as being fed up if they are too skinny for whatever reason so they enjoy the extra food too!

Obviously some dogs don't get on in kennels (although I've never met a dog in ours that doesn't and has to go home) and if that's the case then at least you will know for next time to sort out other arrangements. However I will guess that your dog will no doubt be fine. They also tend to enjoy it because (if staying for more than a few days) they get used to the routine of the kennels and settle very well.
Some of them even pull their owners to the kennels :o as they're so excited.

I know this isn't much advice-wise but I'm hoping it will reassure you just a little bit!

PurpleFrog · 15/05/2014 16:46

littlewhitebag - I haven't been stalking you, honestly! Grin

...but as a fellow Scottish lab owner I have paid attention to posts of yours I have stumbled across, and gradually the jigsaw fell into place.

I reckon I work in the same town you live in/near. I work for the biggest employer in the town and am currently sitting in a 1960s concrete block on the edge. I live about 10 miles away in the old County capital!

littlewhitebag · 15/05/2014 17:02

Okay. I think I've got you. I live in the town you work in. But I work in the new town 20 miles away. I will keep you posted on the kennels. They are on the south side of the town you work in and very close to where I live.

I like posting in codeGrin

OP posts:
PurpleFrog · 15/05/2014 17:07

Ah - the new town 20 miles away - I am from there originally!

I haven't heard about these new kennels. Please do keep me posted. I would prefer to go by recommendation.

[I'm not sure how cryptic this code actually is! Grin ]

littlewhitebag · 15/05/2014 17:10

Me neither but it is fun! I am from that new town originally too it would be funny if we knew each other. I also attended that place that you work ( if I have got it right) and met DH there.

OP posts:
WeeClype · 15/05/2014 17:20

My dogs are going in kennels for 17 nights! I'm dreading it so my MIL is going to drop them off for me. At least they'll be together, my fear is one doesn't like strangers so I'm hoping she doesn't act like a eejit and starts liking the kennel staff early on lol

I'm abit Shock at the cost but at least I know my 2 German shepherds will be safe.

PurpleFrog · 15/05/2014 17:54

I also attended the place that I now work...

It would be really funny if we have known each other in the dim and distant past!

My secondary school in the town 20 miles away is the one that has just been rebuilt!

littlewhitebag · 15/05/2014 18:03

Ah well then. That was not my school. Mine was one of the other two with the town name in it. I left a very very long time ago.
