Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound :o ).

Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I’m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don’t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

How was the homecheck LovetheSea?

I am a rubbish photographer, but took a pic as puppies new collar arrived from Meggie Moo

Greyhound, Whippet or Lurcher owner? Here's another pointy hounds cushion!
Lovethesea · 27/09/2014 18:55

Lovely photo!

Homecheck went fine, it was all the same questions I'd written out to them already, and an ID check, garden check, chat over plans on feeding, training methods, sleeping etc. They brought a gorgeous 14 week old staffie they are fostering after someone rescued a litter off gumtree; he was so ridiculously calm, no mouthing or nipping or whining for nearly an hour. The kind of puppy to lead a fool into thinking rehoming a puppy would be fiiiiiiiiiiine....

But not me! Those puppy threads are terrifying. They agreed a 18 month and up would be ideal as we need a calmer dog given kids, cats and work bits. So, just a wait for the right dog. I know hounds first are assessing Meg and Grace and others so maybe they could be ok! It seems like it's taking a while but actually I know it'll suddenly be me staring at a snoring hound taking up my whole sofa :-)

mistlethrush · 27/09/2014 19:14

Mistlehound is being all demandingy... I think she wants curry pots to lick. Small dog is snuggling though - she only needs 8" of sofa to jam herself between the end of the sofa and my leg. She is such a different dog from 5 weeks ago - she runs everywhere on a walk now - keeping an eye on her big sister - and she's turned into a really solid ball of muscle in the time too. She now needs to find a groomer that can make her look slightly less scruffy.

CMOTDibbler · 28/09/2014 17:35

My dogs have had their first day ever at day boarding, the same lady dpuppy was fostered with. As they have 3 lurchers of their own, 3 foster dogs, 2 boarders and a couple of other day stay lurchers, it was totally pointy heaven! And one of dpuppys sisters was there for the day, so it was lovely to meet her.
Dogs are exhausted and it couldn't have gone better, so will be booking them for a proper stay

Lovethesea · 28/09/2014 23:00

Sounds a perfect dog day! Hoping to find something similar near Norwich once we have a dog, just in case I'm out all day for work and family can't help.

Have asked about Scruples Max but I think no chance as they want another dog ideally for him.

I completely understand the comfort sighthounds get from a dog friend. I just think as first time owners we're best getting one to focus on; enables me to train the dog and kids and cats how to coexist happily; fits easily into the bed, car etc so easy to take out lots.

Have any of you gone from none to two? Does it make it harder to train recall etc?

Lovethesea · 02/10/2014 08:25

Home check all fine with Hounds First Grin

Now to locate that rare beast that would fit with our madhouse.

mistlethrush · 02/10/2014 12:11

Have you seen the black whippet / staffie that's in 'other homeless hounds' on LL?

Lovethesea · 02/10/2014 14:15

I did, he's lovely but not OK with cats. Scruples are home checking us and we are still interested in Max on their website.

Any thoughts on Meg on Hounds First Facebook? Waiting to hear their thoughts but thinking she is too young to be left sometimes?

Lovethesea · 05/10/2014 14:43

OK, tips please!

We have a six month old lurcher joining the family as a foster looking to adopt next weekend!

Have ordered Total Recall and am trying to figure out a crate size. I think she'll be safer in a den with the door open than a bed while the kids are small and more likely to trip over and fall on her (though I think she'll actually be on the sofa most of the time....)

Where is the best place to get a crate, bedding, toys, etc.

Excited and daunted all at the same time. She is in foster 200 miles away so they've suggested a trial period with us rather than visiting a couple of times then taking her. They don't want her to get too settled where she is either then have to move again.

So strange to be preparing to live with someone you haven't met! But they have done a good assessment of her and she is currently fostered with small children and cats so perfect for our set up!

Gulp. Here goes the dog ownership journey!!

moosemama · 05/10/2014 16:29

Oh - how exciting! She certainly, sounds perfect based on her background. What mix is she, do you know? We will be requiring photos asap. Grin

I've posted on your book suggestions thread. A copy of The House Lurcher by Jackie Drakeford might also be a useful buy.

Cheapest place I found for crates was Doggie Solutions. We bought the budget range for Pip and it's been absolutely fine.

Scuttle if you're around - I might see you at the RGT Show next Sunday, given it's practically at the end of my road! Grin It just depends if dh is working, as I have no childcare next weekend and don't fancy taking both dogs and all three dcs on my own. I was hesitating about taking Pip, because he's been such a blooming teenager around other dogs recently, but we've just had a lovely walk at a nearby country park and I'm thinking it might do him good. Doubt we'll enter anything, but the socialisation will be really good for him.

moosemama · 05/10/2014 16:33

Sorry, that should have said depends how long dh is working - he's definitely working, hence our not being able to go to the LL show, but if he's only going in later in the afternoon we'll be able to go to the show for an hour first.

TheCunnyFunt · 05/10/2014 16:41

Helloooo everyone! Hope you're all ok?

Who is it on here that takes their Lurcher racing at Doncaster (I think) through Lurcher Link? Someone I know on facebook is desperate to take her Afghan hound somewhere to race/go off lead.

YourHandInMyHand · 05/10/2014 16:55

Interesting to hear about other hounds and sofas. Shydog has never ever tried to get up onto my sofa but if we go stay in a Haven holiday static caravan she is on the sofa all week with a look thaat says "well its my holiday too" Grin I enjoy sofa cuddles on holiday hut wouldntvwant her on ours at home all the time.

Lovethesea · 05/10/2014 17:24

With what the children have done to the sofa I think a dog covering a good portion of it can only be an improvement.....

She is a whippet beddy x with a possible hint of grey. Seems laid back with people but is nervous of crashing big lurchers playing vigorously and strange dogs.

moosemama · 05/10/2014 18:01

Cunny it's Mistle that takes Mistlehound to the LL Askern simulated coursing. If you direct your friend to the LL website they have an events section where there will be more details.

Hi YourHand Lovely to see you, how is your lovely girl doing?

LovethSea sounds like she would hate my two - they honestly look and sound as if they're killing each other when they're running loose and playing. Hmm

I was on the lookout for a beddy/whippet when I ended up with Pip. A few people have said they see Beddy in his face - I think due to all the fur that sticks up in front of his eyes - but he's a bit of a big lad to have Beddy in him really.

TheCunnyFunt · 05/10/2014 18:43

Thanks moose!

Lovethesea · 05/10/2014 21:09

Moose, maybe Pip is a beddy grey x?

This is our exciting arrival for the weekend.......

Greyhound, Whippet or Lurcher owner? Here's another pointy hounds cushion!
Lovethesea · 05/10/2014 21:30

This is so strange. I am all anxious and butterfly tummy. It's like leaping off a high board into a pool.

Can't wait too meet her. Name suggestions welcome too as I have a friends daughter already using her current name so I think I will bribe her with treats into recognising another. Two syllables. Not awful to yell across a park. Beach. Woods. The cats are a famous author and a cbeebies character so not too mainstream would be nice. Had to restrain myself with the kids, I figure the dog doesn't have to pass the prime minister test!

So many places I want to explore with her. At least it's winter so I won't be tempted so badly to take her out too much.

Am I right in thinking 30 minutes exercise twice a day is the max for 6 months old? Increase it 5 minutes each month.....until when? Year? 18 months? Is that just mad off lead exercise or all walking on roads too?

Someone I know has some old dog stuff not being used so going to get that and see what else I need. The cheap crate place looks great, I'll measure the lounge corner tomorrow and see what can be fitted in with the door still opening.

YourHandInMyHand · 05/10/2014 21:40

Lovethesea how exciting! My grey came on a home trial because of distance too and was so so nervous at first, hence the name of ShyDog on here. Smile I resisted getting a crate at first but glad I got one in the end as mine seems to like it.

Hello moosemama ShyDog is my perfect pet. She has come out of her shell and is such a pleasure to have, I love her so much. [soppy git emotion]

I forgot to update after our camping trip but she was fine in her lovely Milgi coat and kept trying to steal the airbeds and sleeping bags when we weren't looking. Apparently they were much more appealing than her mat and double duvet.

moosemama · 05/10/2014 21:50

Aw, she's gorgeous. She does have a look of Pip somehow too. There could well be some Beddy in his mix. I've met a couple of old-timers who insist he's pure Deer/Grey, but I don't think he's got enough bone for that either.

To be honest, I think he's a good old-fashioned Lurcher x Lurcher, so could be a fair few breeds in there somewhere.

Exercise advice is 5 minutes per month of life until they've finished bone growth, which varies according to size. That's actually lead walking and playing with other dogs though, as off-lead ambling at their own pace doesn't need to be so restricted - unless they're completely bonkers and not good at knowing when to stop. Pip would be happy to mooch along beside me at that age - unless I let Lurcherboy off too, then all bets were off, so I only ever let them off one at a time until I was sure he had finished growing upwards.

YourHand glad ShyDog was warm enough on your camping trip - and not soppy at all, it's lovely to hear how much you love her. Smile

We've recently bought a vintage caravan, so Pip will be experiencing camping from next Spring. Seriously hoping he's got over his teenager stage by then, as I'm not sure his yodelling at other dogs is going to be all that popular on camping sites. Hmm

Lovethesea · 06/10/2014 15:45

This shopping for hounds is fun! I'm not a shopper normally (except for books) but I am enjoying having amazon wing me a crate, car harness, dog mattress for crate, extra warm layer for crate.....and obviously once she is here I might need to get her a coat and new collar ......

moosemama · 06/10/2014 18:43

Oh, having a hound opens up a whole new world of shopping opportunities. I don't enjoy shopping for myself, but I love buying coats, collars and leads for my dogs.

I always think hounds are one of the few breeds you can legitimately get away with buying multiple collars for - not to mention the housecoat, raincoat and winter coats she'll need. Of course she'll still be growing too, which opens up scope for new collar and coat choices as she's sizes up. Wink Grin

TheCunnyFunt · 06/10/2014 19:06

Might need to get a new coat and collar? This is pointy hound! New coats and collars are mandatory :o there are several shopping links in the OP of this thread :) Milgi Coats is run by our very own ScuttleButter, they do some gorgeous things!

CMOTDibbler · 06/10/2014 19:44

Coat and collar is a must. I love Scuttles fleeces and raincoats (cmotdog was wearing his starry raincoat this morning as he won't go out in the rain otherwise), and I get my collars from Meggie Moo. Her fleece leads are fabulous too, and excellent quality

Lovethesea · 06/10/2014 20:25

Thanks for the tips! I am told she is broken coated and might be either a broken coated or a scruffy when older. Not using a coat at the moment.

I need her here to measure her, but yes, obviously she will then grow and need more ....

Am pondering collar colours for black scruffy fur.

And names. She is Meg now but so is my friends daughter, all name options welcome, especially the quirky. Had to be sensible with the kids, but the dog won't want to be prime minister!
