What do you feed your dog?

I'm currently feeding my dog a brand that rhymes with Makers, and I'm 99.9% sure it's shit not very good.

Originally she had science plan, but she stopped eating it as soon as she had tried "Makers" (she had eaten it when we were at a friends house)

I give her tuna or chicken and vegetables with rice a few times a week but not sure if I could do it every day.

Any suggestions for other foods?

Yes it does fit, he even struggles to get last few bits out which is good as it keeps him occupied for ages

TheBookThief · 01/03/2014 12:20

Our pup is irritatingly fussy & at £7+ for a 2kg bag I am reluctant to keep buying food she won't eat!

Is there anywhere I can get smaller sample packs?
I tried emailing a few manufacturers but noone replied.

At the moment I am trying to sneak the food in mixed with sardines & milk & egg but she does very well picking round the kibble!!

MaddestMother · 01/03/2014 14:17

Raw is just that, raw food! There's loads of info around if you have a look. I use ready made complete food that I buy frozen because I have tiny dogs so hardly costs anything but lots of people DIY as it can be a lot cheaper when you know what you're doing. My yorkies (who have always been really fussy) love their food and I would never go back to processed food now Smile

NCISaddict · 01/03/2014 14:28

I use Natural Instinct Complete raw food with the odd tin of sardines and raw eggs for my Border Collie. He loves it and is in very good condition.

LoreleisSecret · 01/03/2014 14:43

Wainwrights puppy dry food.
He loves it !

hairypaws · 01/03/2014 14:54

Book thief go on to markus Muhle website and get uk Rep details, she will happily send you a sample.

TheBookThief · 01/03/2014 19:22

Thanks Hairypaws will try them too

Vet's kitchen Salmon and Potato with added Butcher's Tripe tinned. Vet's Kitchen has the advantage of being a reasonable food that you can buy in Asda :-)

ilovedogsandcats · 02/03/2014 17:03

Mainly raw bones, chicken necks, chicken feet, tripe etc. A weekly tin of sardines. Leftovers/scraps most days too.

Hi all,

Thank you for your advice. I have ditched the Bakers and whilst deciding what to move onto, I am feeding my dog the following;

  • Tuna or cod with rice, broccoli, peas and spinach.

Can you tell me if this is a good meal? She loves it (but she did love Bakers!)

I've read some conflicting information on broccoli some websites have said it great for dogs others have said its not so good.

TIA Smile

Mine were on raw until they decided to hide a kidney in my bed :( ugh!

Now one is on Applaws kibble and one is on Taste of the Wild - suspect he is allergic to grain and this is grain free. They have Naturediet wet food microwaved and mixed in to the kibble and both scoff it down. Quite pricey though so will be trying to find something with a high meat content but cheaper soon.

I used to give them the bakers meaty square things as treats but they just make them go crazy hyper

HoneyDragon · 15/03/2014 21:06

I'm one of the Markus Muhle folk Grin I can rate this food highly enough it's incredible. It does contain grain, but as it's a cold pressed food it doesn't seem to cause bloat or nasty skin reactions.

I rate it as much as I do Origen only it's half the price. Top stuff. Hullys coat gleams, and her teeth are brilliant.

And most importantly her poo's her acceptably small firm and non whiffy Wink

AlpacaYourThings · 15/03/2014 22:03

Are dogs not meant to eat grains?

HoneyDragon · 15/03/2014 22:38

Quite a few dogs end up with allergies. They are fine, but the cheaper the food, the more Cereals are used as fillers.

beachyhead · 15/03/2014 22:43

I do Harringtons mixed with Naturediet for both of mine, but I'm hoping to go raw when I've got an extra freezer.....

Millie's Wolfheart here

AlpacaYourThings · 15/03/2014 22:46

I give my dog rice, is that an issue?

OP posts:
furlinedsheepskinjacket · 15/03/2014 22:48

my dog has tinned food

am I the only one?

he's fit healthy and 11 yo.

aliasjoey · 15/03/2014 22:51

Dogs are often sensitive to grains especially wheat. Rice is usually okay. We feed James Wellbeloved.

Sorry, am not an expert but I recommend Which Dog Food website for more info. I'm thinking of trying Arden Grange.

francesdrake · 16/03/2014 15:14

Mine do really well on CSJ CP18 with the odd tin of pilchards/egg/yoghurt added for variation.
