What do you feed your dog?

AlpacaYourThings · 23/02/2014 18:21

I'm currently feeding my dog a brand that rhymes with Makers, and I'm 99.9% sure it's shit not very good.

Originally she had science plan, but she stopped eating it as soon as she had tried "Makers" (she had eaten it when we were at a friends house)

I give her tuna or chicken and vegetables with rice a few times a week but not sure if I could do it every day.

Any suggestions for other foods?

bakers is too expensive.

MagratGarlik · 24/02/2014 08:50

Usually raw (cheap, healthy for them and not that much hassle). When we are really short of time/freezer space we give them Harrington's. They get sardines/pilchards/mackerel once per week too and we supplement their food with fish oil, seaweed extract and vitamin B tablets. The older one also gets glucosamine and condroitin for her joints.

We gave them Bakers last year whilst we were on holiday and couldn't get anything else locally - within days their breath smelled, their coats started getting dandruff and their poo was enormous and smelled foul. If that is just the effects after a few days, I dread to think what a longer term diet of the stuff does.

BastardDog · 24/02/2014 08:53

Our current dog seems to have a very delicate digestion. We spent over a year of trial and error with a variety of brands of wet and dry commercial dog food and things only ever settled down when he was on the doggy diarrhea diet of chicken and rice. So we decided to go with that and have gradually expanded it over time.

Now he eats a wide variety of human food; chicken, liver (not more than once a week) fish, eggs, beef, sausage, lamb, pork (small amounts occassionally) pasta, rice, mashed potatoes, carrots, broccoli, green beans, cauliflower (I mash the veg too). He likes cottage cheese, plain yogurt and cheddar cheese as treats.

The vet said a raw carrot every other day would be a good idea from a dental health point of view, but he's not interested and dental sticks upset his stomach so I've not cracked that conundrum yet.

I've feed previous dogs Bakers and they've loved it and seemed to be in good health as far as I could tell.

poubella · 24/02/2014 08:56

Raw chicken, bones, offal and the odd bit of carrot / veg . No cooked food or grain at all due to allergy.
My dogs are really healthy on it and do nice neat poos.

ShadowOfTheDay · 24/02/2014 08:57

Another vote for Symply here - we have a Westie with a delicate tum, and delicate skin.... both problems non existent on Symply...

He also likes to crunch on a cold carrot from the fridge..

LucyLasticBand · 24/02/2014 08:58

my pup loiters while I am peeling the carrots and follows me out to the guinneapigs to feed them the peelings, so now I have to feed her a carrot as well? Grin

Toomuch2young · 24/02/2014 09:06

Bakers is awful full of sugars, colourings and nasty ingredients.

I feed wafcol as good for sensitive skins and tums and they look fab on it.

WhereBeThatBlackbirdTo · 24/02/2014 09:07

Our Springer x has Chappie kibble with some Chappie meat on the top. I've tried all sorts of dried food with him - Burns, James Wellbeloved, Fish4dogs - and Chappie is the only thing which doesn't upset his stomach. (I can't feed him raw since I'm a veggie and I couldn't do it!)

BastardDog (that's what the husband calls the springer, btw) we've just started putting Plaque Off on the springer's food. He's only had it for about 2 weeks and his teeth are already amazingly clean - they were getting a bit grubby even though he's only 2.

Oneglassandpuzzled · 24/02/2014 09:13

Only ever Orijen dried dog food. It seems more expensive but because they need less of it, owing to its high protein, a bag lasts longer than cheaper varieties.

Plaque Off is good stuff.

LucyLasticBand · 24/02/2014 09:29

that is an interesting read, is it fair?
they seem to be ok about the Wagg.

DaddysBigTummy · 25/02/2014 13:04

I have been feeding Millie's Wolfheart since I got my pup in August but I've just bought a bag of Markus Muhle as it is highly rates on Which dog food and is cheaper than MW. Got 16.5 Kg for £31 on Zooplus whereas Millie's was £37 for 12kg

Royal Canin for cats and dogs. Less poo and easy to change to low cal dental renal etc because they all have the same flavours.

MaddestMother · 28/02/2014 14:40

I feed mine raw, mainly nutriment and sometimes nature's menu or whatever I have going spare. They love a raw egg over the top as well.
Their poops are tiny and my boy is much less neurotic than he used to be. Smile

notanotherusername1 · 28/02/2014 16:14

Have used Wainwrights wet and dry, now use their grain free although he has never had a problem with the original. I am a bit fussy about what I feed the dog and make sure I buy the best food. Always read the ingredient and buy food with the most meat content. Would never buy anything that said animal or vegetable deratives (spelling) as its slaughterhouse flloor sweepings.

He has Lily's kitchen if it's on offer, Natures Menu and frozen chicken blocks that have veg added.

He will eat anything so he also has lots of our leftovers. A bit of a mixed bag really.

punter · 28/02/2014 16:38

Ours has Hills i/d kibble, anything else before that (eg Purina) has given him terrible runny poos. Sometimes has a can of Chappie. 18 month old lab btw. Mostly good firm poos but has big habit of eating grass, like a cow, and that can cause the odd runny tummy.

hairypaws · 28/02/2014 16:42

There was a thread not too long ago on this. I tried Markus Muhle as recommended by another user and my girl loves it. She is very fussy but eats this straight away. Her bad breath is gone and her teeth are sparkly white. No problems with her poos either. It's the only dried food she will gobble down.

KringleCandleLover · 28/02/2014 16:48

My 3 eat either Wainwrights grainfree or Barking Heads. I alternate when buying sacks so as they don't get bored.

DaddysBigTummy · 28/02/2014 17:30

That's good to know hairypaws My dog has been having it mixed in with the rest of his Millie's Wolfheart last couple of days and he loves it. He was trying to rip open the cardboard box it was in when it was delivered! And because the pieces are bigger than normal kibble it doesn't fall out of his Kong Wobbler as easily either.

Gorran · 28/02/2014 20:02

Applaws.

Snugglepiggy · 28/02/2014 20:48

Was feeding my 4 month old pups Arden Grange dry puppy kibble but earlier this week they both were sick and had very loose stools - think its a bug that the vet said is going around. So after rice and chicken they are now reluctant to eat the AG dry - to be fair there is only one flavour and I think they were a bit bored with it already.I have some James Wellbeloved in 3 different flavours that was on offer 3 for 2 and I am keen to try it now.But all the advice on changing foods is to do it gradually. They are really hungry though ,and poos still a bit soft. Not sure in the morning wether to just give them the new James Wellbeloved on its own which I suspect they will wolf down,or wether to mix in with some of the AG and phase it in.Just want them to eat as little boys ribs are showing. But don't want to upset their tums again. My old boy we had 14 years had a cast iron stomach and could eat pretty much anything. But have a feeling these two spaniels may be more delicate in that area.
Also wondering if a bit of wet food of same brand would help make mealtimes more varied. We gave old boy safe scraps also, but but other than a bit of scrambled egg or poached fish not yet given these two any of our food. They are Springers so anyone with experience of those would welcome recommendations.

hairypaws · 28/02/2014 22:41

Does it fit in the big wobbly kong Dave , I just assumed it wouldn't so didn't try. Will try tomorrow as she enjoys battering that about.

hairypaws · 28/02/2014 22:42

pops daddy's big tummy - don't know where I got Dave from.

jeniz · 01/03/2014 09:40

I feed mine vets kitchen salmon and potato,I've got 7 dogs and that's the only one that suits them all.
I also add a bit of butchers tripe to it.

AlpacaYourThings · 01/03/2014 10:12

Thanks again or all these ideas! I'm spoilt for choice now.

Can I ask, what is "raw" is it a brand or is it raw meat and vegetables?
