The doghouse

if you dont pick up your dog poo....

pollyputthekettleonagain · 23/01/2014 12:51

can you please tell me why?

Now i know most people on here are responsible dog owners who pick up EVERY time.

BUT on a forum of this size, there must be at least one person who is willing to admit it, and explain why.

I just dont get why you would leave your dog poo in the street.

I can't pick up other dog poo, makes me urge and feel sick for ages. I can carry around my own dog's poop for hours but can't touch it from another dog.

Last week I had two bags of poop on my walk and merrily started walking home only to realise I had lost one bag. I spent 20 mins retracing my steps, in the dark, with a torch trying to find the stupid bag of poo! Almost did a happy dance when I found it and could go home.

I think I read somewhere that guide dogs are trained to go on command so that it does get picked up . Also being old is no excuse ,if you're too old to pick up after your dog you shouldn't have one . We have a bin shortage where I live so you take your bag home and bin it or vary your way home to take in a bin .

There are long handled poop scoopers for people who either can't bend down or who prefer to scoop at arms length.

i see that people are brazen enough to allow thier dogs to do it but not bold enough to admit it.

I think that says a lot too.

You can make two assumptions from this thread

  1. The people who post in doghouse are on the whole responsible owners
  2. Most people on this thread are women so it's probably men who don't pick up after their dogs , which is what I think anyway .

i think that there are men on here too!

i think its outrageous to blame dog poo on MEN!

the conclusion i have drawn is that if the dog owner cant see anyone around they will leave the mess behind.

we have a nt property with lots of trees etc. we always stray off the path becuase all you can smell close to the path is dog shit. Unfortunatley some dogs dont stay on the path....YUK.

they say kids dont play in the woods often enough. Proably cos they get loads of hassle when they come home covered in dog shit

How can you get that conclusion from all the posts that say that they do pick up dog poo.

You didn't want anyone to admit, you just want to be right. You have your own issues against dogs/dog owners and it doesn't matter what people say, you wont listen.

What was the point of making the thread in that case?

non-dogowner here.
may I ask a question?
in the us dogs often are trained to shit into the gutter. would that be ok in uk? or even possible, as the gutters here tend to have a grid above?

I pick up off the pavement ALWAYS, as per others on this thread when in the woods if in the undergrowth I flick with a stick or bury it - but i pick up if on a woodland path or near to it. To get over the eww factor I use disposable latex gloves as well as poo bags - then I don't have to worry about accidental poo / skin contact!

I do have a problem with one of my dogs though - if we are walking alongside each other (lead walking on pavement) she will poo as we are walking without even breaking her stride. Unless I keep turning around every few metres I am completely unaware that she has done it! I do keep checking though and i sincerely hope that I've never missed it!

I don't think that's fair. There are plenty of dog owners who pick up, regardless of whether or not they can be seen, and there are plenty who don't care if anyone sees them - they just won't scoop. There are a third group of chancers who won't scoop if no-one can see them, but I don't think you can lump all the non-scoopers together.

The OP obviously has an agenda so this is a pointless thread . I suggest she just tell her daughter that all dog owners are liars as that's basically what she has called us . Thanks .

I've had a couple of occasions where I haven picked it up but all total accidents... One was walking from the car to the dog groomer and didn't have my little clip of bags... Literally didn't know what to do but told the groomer who said she'd deal with it..

And another time in the park when my DD fell over quite badly and I was juggling carrying her, holding the lead and my bag and trying to get her to the car and my dog went twice as he was being pulled along.

I don't think people actively leave it on purpose.

Actually, there are people on here who have said that they don't pick up if the shit isn't on a path; and that's from people who would presumably call themselves 'responsible owners'.

I disagree. There are plenty who definitely leave it on purpose.

Always pick up in the street, fields, paths etc. We live in a very rural area, so if the dog goes in long grass, undergrowth or in the woods I don't bother.

Wallison, do you mean the people that are following the instructions set out by the forestry commission and NT? Because that's the only ones I can see otherwise.

I'm lucky in that I walk the mutts over land that is own and maintained by the MOD. The public aren't allowed on it. We pick up, or we 'stick and flick' into the brambles if we are following the woods route. When the woods started being used for training again we picked up, otherwise we don't need to. I've got a rucksack that has a special 'poo pocket' for times when I am nowhere near a bin and MuttDog cannot wait. They are becoming very popular.

Report
Wallison · 24/01/2014 14:02

Whatever instructions they are following, they are leaving their dogs' shit for other people to tread on. I don't much care who has said that is ok; it clearly isn't, and it's scummy behaviour.

Report
SirChenjin · 24/01/2014 14:08

Those aren't 'instructions' LtEve - those are an alternative option to leaving your mutt's bagged shit lying about the place. The preferred option, of course, would be to pick it up - given that you can see it to flick it, then you can see it to pick it - and take it home or put it in the nearest dog bin. Sticking and flicking isn't an option up here in Scotland I am delighted to say.

Polly, why do you want to have someone admit it? What would be your retort?

I understand that there's a conflict of opinion re the flick a stick thing, but you are talking about those folk who leave the poo on the street, which everyone on the thread, dog owner or not, wouldn't seem to a agree with. Smile

Do you live in the countryside or the town Wallison? ...Because it you lived in the New Forest (where New Forest ponies, pigs and cows all graze and shit plenty on the common land, not to mention the fox poo) you would understand the futility of picking up when your dog goes in the undergrowth - obviously on a path you pick up.

These aren't beautifully manicured lawns where children frolic; people wear wellies or walking boots pretty much year round, because even when it's been sunny there are still muddy bits. Around 90% of the people you see are also dog walkers. In a heatwave we get the odd day tripper - who generally sits about 6 feet away from their vehicle in a deckchair.

The dog walks we do, including the ones on MOD land, have a variety of animals. Today, on our lunchtime walk of only 45 mins we saw three Munt Jack, shed loads of rabbits and pheasant, some cows, squirrels, and the remains of one deer and a couple of birds - which point to foxes. BrownThing decided to roll in some particularly stinky fox shite as well.

None of those animals bag their own shite. All our dogs 'business' is in the undergrowth, where no human will go, whereas the wild animal shite is all over.

None of my 'dog friends' would leave dog shite in the open. I don't know a single person that does. The streets where I live are full of dogs (11 houses in my street alone, one empty, 7 dogs) but aren't full of shit. I feel sorry for anyone who lives somewhere where this is a problem.

I don't know that they do, I think it's a nigh on psychopathic disregard for others.

I live in a city, hmc, where what precious wild common land we have which should be open to all to be enjoyed is instead covered in dog shit both on the path and also in fields/woods. It mars people's enjoyment of the area and I know plenty of people who just don't let their kids run around in the woods because of it. This makes me cross because people should take precedence over shitting dogs.
