Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound ).

Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I’m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don’t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

I can't see a photo but then I'm using a phone app and can I get MN to work via safari? No Angry

Hopefully I will have some success later.

The last couple of days Pooch's recall has gone to pot. It's been so bad I am keeping her on the lead in certain areas. I don't know if its because Blue is here? Anyone any experience?

I'm also trying to find somewhere I can let him have some free running in a secure/contained place but no luck yet. Going to try my local tack shop and maybe put an advert up. I did find a tennis court but when I was there a couple of weeks ago the gates had all been locked. Boo hiss!!

I trimmed his front nails yesterday. The vet said they were ok as long as they weren't touching the floor but when I looked again they were? They do look long.

So the cat has come home and Blue is VERY interested. He's stopped crying but has been "locked on". They've been separated by a baby gate and Blue has been muzzled. This morning he looked at him but Jo crying or attempting to get to him so I'm hoping its a matter of time. I do reward him when he looks at me or comes away. There is no point me saying his name and it gets zero reaction.

He fell asleep on my lap last night and was snoring with his mouth open. We adore him.

CMOTDibbler · 14/03/2014 09:02

He loves it! I just have to hold it up and announce 'jumper' and he runs up, sticks his head through the neck and wags madly with the joy of being back in his fleece

moosemama · 14/03/2014 10:58

Peanut, Lurcherboy's recall went downhill when we got Pip. I think it was a combination of showing off because he was off lead and Pip wasn't and also some pent up energy he had at the nerves and excitement of having a new dog in the house.

We went back to basics, whistle training in the house and garden and longline in the park with jackpot rewards for instant recalls (we use cat food foil trays for this). We only let our two off individually at the moment, partly because they both go deaf when running full on lurcher style whilst leaping on each other, but also because they play a lot of very rough body slamming games, which isn't great for Pip's developing bones.

You can teach him his name by just saying it and treating over and over. I think there's a Kikopup video on it on YouTube. Worked great with Pip.

CMOT - what a cutie! Grin

moosemama · 14/03/2014 11:04

Picture of Pip objecting to the light being turned on in the kitchen when he wanted to sleep. Grin

While we're sharing, Lola with her rawhide :)

cinnamongreyhound · 14/03/2014 12:52

And check out this dog cuddle, see if you can figure which bit belongs to which dog!

cinnamongreyhound · 14/03/2014 12:54

peanutpatty I used the mobile site on safari as the app was awful when I used it!

moosemama · 14/03/2014 13:15

Aw, how lovely that they cuddle like that. Smile

Lurcherboy flatly refuses to cuddle Pip now he's no longer a tiny puppy. Any attempt at cuddling usual receives a really grumpy grumble, so Pip has taken to trying to get around this by sliding along the floor until he's just about touching some part of Lurcherboy, even if it's just a toe! Poor deprived pup has to get his comfort wherever he can. Sad Grin

I really want to post a picture that shows you how leggy Pip has got, but dh keeps saying he'll take one then doesn't, ds1's photos are all blurry and I don't have a smartphone.

Will try and get one over the weekend.

PeanutPatty · 14/03/2014 14:30

Thanks all. Should have made clear that he does know his name but not when he is "locked on"! Blush

When I ever get time to myself I will look up Kikopup as I want to do some training with him.

He drinks quite a bit. Today already he has drunk half a bowl of water and he seems to have full on pees every two hours or so. Pooch hardly drinks in comparison and is a fussy mare about when and where she pees. She has a pelvic floor made of steel as she can hang on for hours. I'm wondering whether Blue is normal in his water intake?

He's also managed to scrape himself on his thigh. How? When?

moosemama · 14/03/2014 14:40

I've always found my bitches can go far longer than their male counterparts without weeing. Lurcherboy is the only exception. Nothing will prise him from his beloved bed to go for a wee until he's good and ready and if it's cold or rainy he'll sometimes hide all day and only go out when he really has to.

Both mine drink like fishes on kibble, but when they were on raw all our dogs have hardly drunk at all.

They tend to have very think skin and do scrape and cut themselves easily. Get yourself a big bottle of hibiscrub in stock and just give them a good clean each time, unless they look like they need stitching obviously.

I had the same panic about Alabama Rot when Pop cut his hock last week on a day I read articles about two new cases. It's so scary isn't it? Pip seems to be able to cut himself whilst running in an open field of lovely flat, short cropped grass. Confused I reckon it's a sighthound superpower!

mistlethrush · 14/03/2014 14:47

We're very lucky with mistlehound in terms of skin - she only managed a scrape when she knocked the 4x4" wooden post down (snapped it at ground level) - I'm surprised she didn't break her leg! She has also managed to jump between the top two strands of a barbed wire fence and only get a 2" scratch as a result - I anticipated an emergency trip to the vets.

One of our dogs (well bitches) went 26 hrs before being forceably ejected in case she made herself really ill - she was a lurcher too. Mistlehound likes weeing in puddles or streams or lakes. Never had a dog that has done this (or at least to this extent).

CMOTDibbler · 14/03/2014 15:11

Mine frequently scrapes himself lightly, esp since he learnt to run and jump over things in a deer like manner. His coat is so fine that theres nothing to protect him on legs/tum/chest.

Hibiscrub imo is quite harsh on the skin. We started using a product called Hypocare on the pony, then us, now dog too, and its very effective without stinging and drying out the skin.

PeanutPatty · 14/03/2014 17:57

The cut has bamboozled me because he has been on lead for all his exercise. Unless he did it in the garden. It's all v odd.

moosemama · 14/03/2014 18:15

Oo that's good to know CMOT. I do think Hibiscrub can be a bit harsh (although I will confess to loving the smell ... I know, I know, I'm odd). I use it because I was advised to by much more knowledgeable pointy owners than myself and I'm slightly paranoid about infection etc. Where can you get Hypocare from?

Lurcherboy never seems to cut himself, but he has a really thick shaggy coat and well covered legs and tum.

moosemama · 14/03/2014 18:18

Scratch that - excuse the pun! Grin They sell it at Viovet. Wish I'd known earlier, as I only placed an order with them this afternoon (a Kong Wobbler and Soft Buster Cube to try and slow down how fast Pip scarfs down his kibble when I'm out, as he can empty an frozen solid XL kong in less than 10 minutes now Hmm).

CMOTDibbler · 14/03/2014 18:27

They sell it in our local horsey shops, if you are passing such a thing.

I like the smell of Hibiscrub - when I had my year of wearing splints I bought hibiwash to combat the nasty fungalness of it all and rather liked it as a handwash

moosemama · 14/03/2014 18:28

Glad it's not just me! Grin

We have a horsey shop just up the road, but I'm too intimidated to go in. Blush

CMOTDibbler · 14/03/2014 18:46

Just take a dog with you - ours fall over themselves at the sight of a dog Grin

They used to intimidate me, but once I owned a (very scruffy) pony, found that people are very down to earth. Its hard not to be when you are permanently covered in mud/hair/straw, and have a slight aura of horse poo surrounding you tbh.

Cmotdog and I had a walk down to our indoor market today for a visit to the pet stall - and some treats if you look pleading - and a giant bone from the butchers. These bones are so solid that he can gnaw on them for weeks, so I have to go and round them up from being rather modern art installations left on window sills or ds's bed.

cinnamongreyhound · 14/03/2014 19:52

I love the smell of hibiscrub too.

Peanut drinks a lot more than Lola but can easily go 4-5hrs without needing a wee. Both wee loads when out for a walk.

MegBusset · 14/03/2014 20:44

I have found a Toy that Jack likes! It's a squeaky soft toy pheasant, we spotted it in pets at home today and he went mad for it. We have been playing fetch in the garden :)

DS1 has an appt at the allergy clinic on Tuesday so we'll find out then if we can keep Jack...

mistlethrush · 14/03/2014 20:52

Meg - we have a duck that mistlehound got for christmas that she likes - but she also likes 'normal' squeekers too - and likes a variety, will play with one, get bored, and then play with a new one...

MegBusset · 14/03/2014 20:53

Here's Jack with his toy :)

PatTheHammer · 15/03/2014 17:17

HmmI can't see photos of all the hounds on my iPad

Ill have to go on laptop later to have a nosey.

Lush to have nice sunny weather and dry fields back. Dee is a happy hound but hunting instinct is majorly kicking in, we have had a near miss with a squirrel and a bunny this week.

Aside from that she seems so confident and playful with other dogs now, I guess greys are bought up in social groups anyway but she just seems to have come out of her shell and is instigating games of chase with all comersGrin

She is so happy with other dogs that I have started a campaign on DH for a friend. I would love another dearly and I think she would too. My hours are going down again next year (by request from me due to Dd's disability) so I should end up with 2 full days off a week, ideal time to take on another hound in my opinion!

Gooner123 · 15/03/2014 18:57

PatTheHammerim the same, yearning for another hound!might have to be next yr for me now Sad.Yes it's hunting season,we have near misses with furries every day,my boy Won't run into cover so they generally get away.
