Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound ).

Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I’m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don’t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

Peanut - have you seen Gent and Mitzi on a 'Other Homeless Hounds' thread on LL. Both cat friendly and sound like really lovely dogs all round.

TurnipSlippers · 20/02/2014 20:08

Hi everyone

Only just discovered MN has an area for pointy owners. I have a 2.5yo lurcher named Lucky, we rescued him when he was 5 months.

He is an absolute star...sleeps pretty much all day as I understand is the norm, only really waking for food or walks.

I'm looking forward to joining in and getting to know everyone and their hounds but wondered if I could be cheeky and ask if anyone had any knowledge of histiocytomas as my boy has a round, pink lump on his leg just a little bigger than a pea. He occasionally licks it but not to excess. It bled a little yesterday.

Been to the vets this evening and apparently that's what the vet thinks it might be. Apparently they can take a sample but it probably would not tell us anything as the sample wouldn't be big enough.

I just wondered if anyone has experience of these lumps. I can attempt to post a photo later if anyone wants a look. I know no one can diagnose over the internet but I'm just looking for a bit of reassurance.

mistlethrush · 20/02/2014 20:11

Can I suggest that you take a photo of it and then post in the 'advice needed' section of Lurcher Link - I'm sure that someone will have had experience of that there... here

Gooner123 · 20/02/2014 20:15

Hi turnip, sorry can't help with your prob.but you might consider a site called lurcher link ,they have an advice needed section.
Hope lucky gets well soon

Gooner123 · 20/02/2014 20:16

Bugger,beaten to it.

PeanutPatty · 20/02/2014 20:34

Thanks Moose!

Brief update on the hound front - we've passed two home checks from different rescues.

mistlethrush · 20/02/2014 20:37

Goodnews Peanut - just need to find the right hound in one or other of them now!

PeanutPatty · 20/02/2014 20:46

Yup. The search is ON. Grin

TurnipSlippers · 20/02/2014 22:28

Thank you so much. I will see what the folks at Lurcher Link say...was just a bit disconcerting as the vet googled to see what it could be!

PeanutPatty · 22/02/2014 20:33

I thought I'd make some liver cake. Turns out I've bought kidneys and not liver. I've baked them as wasn't sure what else to do only trouble is the house now STINKS. I'm feeling quite sick as a result and I can't bring myself to make myself any dinner now.

Those of you who have adopted rescue pointies, how many rescues did you hook up with?

mistlethrush · 23/02/2014 21:31

We got home checks from two different pointy charities - but that was because we had still got mistledog whilst we were 'searching' and most would not home check us until she was gone, given she had bone cancer and we definitely didn't want a dog to join us whilst we still had her.

mistlethrush · 25/02/2014 13:22

Anyone that can get to south yorkshire on April12th there's a day of racing and showing geared up towards (but not exclusively) lurchers... let me know if you want more info. People do travel 2 or more hours to get to it once they know what its like...

CMOTDibbler · 25/02/2014 13:38

PeanutPatty - we looked at Hall Green RGT (and failed with one dog), Greyhound West of England, and EGLR - who we adopted with. Stalk EGLR on their FB page as dogs turn up on there as soon as they come in. Cmotdog never even went on there as we phoned up about another dog who wasn't suitable but they said 'oh, but we have this puppy coming in..' saw him 6 hours after he arrived!

April 12th you say Mistle? Hmmmm

mistlethrush · 25/02/2014 13:46

This is the link to last year's event with threads which include photos which give you a good idea of the sort of things happening... The cafe is on-site and inexpensive and easy to get 'something' to eat from - although I'm usually reduced to a plate of chips due to the vegeness... Mistlehound says she likes chips too.

PeanutPatty · 25/02/2014 14:11

Thanks for the tips CMODT.

If our children were a fair bit older I'd like to foster.

We are keen to come along on April 12th need to do a bit of juggling to see if possible. Be a shame to miss it. Looks a fabulous day out.

cinnamongreyhound · 25/02/2014 20:07

You dropped off my I'mOn threads :(

We only had a homecheck done by LL but we also contacted others the only ones who considered us with our children and me minding were EGLR, scruples, a local rescue place and the lady we got Lola from.

We love kidneys in my house! Cut the good bits off and fry with onions, green peppers in oil. Add an oxo cube, water and herbs and serve with rice :)

cinnamongreyhound · 25/02/2014 20:09

Missed off what I actually came to say! We've decided to take peanut to have his claws clipped. He gets so snarly and snappy when I do it that I only do max 2 at a time and then he hides away for several hours :(. Hoping taking him somewhere and stating away it'll be done quickly and he won't be cross with me :( :( :(

mistlethrush · 25/02/2014 20:14

Cinnamon - will he let you touch his paws? I will regularly check over mistlehounds paws when she's on the sofa beside me - she joins in and gives them a good nibble. I've found, doing that, and then cutting one or two claws at a time means that she doesn't get het up about it - I don't know if something like this might be worth working at? Alternatively, my aunt-in-law files her border terrier's nails as apparently she doesn't like them being cut (I wouldn't want my aunt in law to cut my toenails in fact, so I don't blame the dog!!!)

cinnamongreyhound · 25/02/2014 20:57

He starts grumbling as soon as I touch his claws, rest if his feet are fine. Have been trying for at least a month to get him used to me just touching his claws but he always growls at me :( have watched a video of a dog being dremelled so dh tried with sand paper and he let him for a bit but then ran off and dh didn't want to push it.

mistlethrush · 25/02/2014 22:49

If he coped with that, I would see if DH can do 2mins of it every night - will hopefully keep things under control...

Scuttlebutter · 25/02/2014 22:53

We just take ours to the vet. One of ours has those titanium black claws that are virtually impossible to cut at home and he gets really stressed, so our lovely vet nurse (or sometimes even our wonderful vet) will trim them for us. Much less stressful for all concerned. Mind you, he looks utterly woebegone afterwards and has that "I need lots of emergency cuddles and a big portion of chicken" face on.

Gooner123 · 26/02/2014 20:52

Hi pointy peeps, just had a flier come through the door today, advertising Henham park country show,( it's near southwold, suffolk) there is a lurcher show and racing by NL&RC,it's march 15th & 16th
If you want to know more checkout living heritage country shows web site
It's quite local for me so will prob.give it a go.

moosemama · 26/02/2014 22:05

Evening all. You'd dropped off my threads as well.

My news is that after a month of myself and various other family member having the flu, now both dogs have a respiratory infection, which includes sore, swollen eyes. Sad

In some ways it's a relief, as Lurcherboy has been acting really out of character, barking and behaving oddly around other dogs and we're thinking this probably explains it.

I am ashamed to say I had no idea. We took Pip to the vet last night, primarily as a follow up to his leg injury, but also because he's had intermittent redness in his eyes that we just assumed it was probably an allergy to something. Vet checked him over and found he has a temperature and respiratory infection. Funny thing is, he hasn't shown any sign of being ill, no worrying at his eyes or behaving differently at all, but, he had just started making a very odd sort of purring noise when he came up and put his head on our laps. I feel so cross with myself for not realising it was an illness, rather than just a cute habit. Blush

Thing is, now we know, we can actually see they're feeling rough, well Lurcherboy anyway. We thought the change was behavioural, but the poor boy was desperately trying to let us know he was feeling poorly. Sad

Good news is that the £70 each worth Hmm of pills and eye creams that they're on should see it off in a few days - so no permanent harm done, but I still feel like a hopeless owner. Sad

I don't think we'll make it to the April race day, but are hoping to get to the show in May if we possibly can.

mistlethrush · 26/02/2014 22:35

Poor Pip and Lurcherboy - I hope they're feeling better soon.

Mistlehound got told off tonight... I was being barked at as I had left my plate on the table and she wanted to see if there was anything she could lick off it... Not acceptable! She's been very quiet and good since!

PeanutPatty · 27/02/2014 11:42

Sorry to hear about the poorly hounds Moose. Thinking about it Pooch has been purring in her sleep recently......

Those of you with two hounds or more or experience of two or more. Please tell me your top ten tips of owning/exercising/introducing a second dog. Grin
