Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound ).

Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I’m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don’t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

Ours don't like raised voices either, they always look very worried! With a lot of kids in my house it gets quite noisy which they don't mind but I often have to shout just to get the noise level down enough to be heard and they don't like that at all. If I do shout peanut will often go to his bed and won't even come over to see me for a while afterwards :(

NumptyNameChange · 18/02/2014 13:38

(it was one of those walks where a dog follows you and you can't shake them and you can initially hear their owner calling sweetly, then a bit more loudly, then sounding like they're ready to ring the dogs neck Grin - she should've just walked with us really)

PeanutPatty · 18/02/2014 13:40

Hey Muffin, we are a young family and looking to adopt a pointy. We particularly like whippets/whippet X.

There are quite a few lurcher rescues who seem to have a fair few Whippets/Whippet Xs pass through their doors and they don't seem to be homeless for long.

PatTheHammer · 18/02/2014 13:56

I think scruples was recommended as a whippet rescue on here?

You could also try GRWE and EGLR as they both get whippets although less commonly than greys and Lurchers.

We considered a whippet as I do love them, they are so comical and there are a few round here. We didn't progress with it as we were told (perhaps wrongly) that they don't particularly like being only dogs and do better in pairs. The ones that we see are almost all in multi dog households so I can't say I know any single ones.
Dee absolutely adores them as they will chase and be chased and are one of the few breeds that can keep up with her.
I've noticed that when she is playing with other breeds she does like a 'pretend run' and when they gain on her she just effortlessly accelerates away with what looks like a smug grin on her face!

Lost my phone in a wet field today on a walk. I had to run back when I realised 10 minutes later and by some miracle it was still there. It's now in a bowl of rice and my calves are hurting as I've discovered how hard it is to run in welliesGrin

CMOTDibbler · 18/02/2014 14:03

Numpty - depends how small. There are whippets, and then the teeny tiny italian greyhounds.

Cmotdog only gets upset if dh uses a low shout, but he can be really upset by it

moosemama · 18/02/2014 14:09

Mine hate raised voices as well - which is a bit unfortunate in our house. Blush

They're also sensitive to how you look at them. Pip in particular gets all edgy if he thinks you're staring at him. It does mean I only have to look at him a certain way for him to get the message that I want him to stop whatever he's doing though.

Both mine slope off and take a long time to come back and forgive after they've been told off. Lurcherboy is a devil for stropping in his bed if he's been chastised.

I started out looking for a Whirrier (Whippet cross Terrier) as I fall in love with every single one I meet. Pip definitely has some terrier in him, but with legs as long as his, I doubt it's crossed with Whippet. Grin

Yes, Scruples are supposed to be a good rescue - but everyone I know who's contacted them either had no reply at all or was asked to fill in a form then never heard from them again.

Both ELGR and Lurcher Link regularly have Whippet crosses in.

Pat hope it's not a iPhone - I understand they give up the ghost if so much as one raindrop lands on them.

I'm impressed. I can't walk in wellies - let alone run in them!

PatTheHammer · 18/02/2014 14:18

It is an iPhone moose but rather thankfully it has a back cover and a screen protector which I'm hoping gives it a smidgen of protectionSad

Dee hates shouting. She's got used to the kids raised voices and zones it out I think but if DH or I raise our voices at each other, or the kids then she goes to her bed (aka the sofa) and Is a quivering wreck until much love and reassurance is given. We try really hard not to shout as we had heard that Greys were sensitive types and they weren't wrong!

PatTheHammer · 18/02/2014 14:20

Ah yes, Italian Greyhounds are really dinky aren't they. We met one the other week and they are so dainty and cute.

cinnamongreyhound · 18/02/2014 14:28

That was my experience of scruples, we had a reply saying they'd accepted us and we were on their list and to email any dogs we particularly had our eye on which I did and then never heard anything again from them!!

Rice works with iPhones as long as you haven't tried to turn them on, had two friends who dropped theirs in the toilet and both times after a week in rice they worked, yay!

PatTheHammer · 18/02/2014 14:34

It's still on, which is maybe a good sign. But it sounds a bit 'crackly' which can't be good so that's why I've tried the rice. If it goes off Ill leave it off for a while!

PatTheHammer · 18/02/2014 16:53

Oh my gosh, feeling a bit sick. In our local town somebody tied up a lovely looking border collie outside the RSPCA vets late last night. The poor thing was left there overnight until the vets receptionist came to open up this morning with no food, water or shelter. Apparently she was wet through, scared stuff and had ripped loads of her own fur out as a stress response.

SadSo sad, why do people do such things when they must know that there are places to take them? Poor thing has gone to the local rescue who are brilliant so I hope there is a happy ending.

Scuttlebutter · 18/02/2014 17:03

I know that EGLR are very much more "on the ball" with new adopters and my experience with them as a volunteer has also been good (and I have a very low tolerance for people dicking around).

I am also hearing very positive things about Hounds First Rescue which was formed by someone who had previously been involved with Scruples so I know the expertise is there, but again they seem to be a lot more on the ball with adopters. The people I've met from them have all been very positive in their approach - they have a selection of greys, lurchers, salukis, whippets etc.

Because of the business, I meet, talk to and hear about an awful lot of rescues and it's possible to quickly form a picture.

moosemama · 18/02/2014 17:29

Oo-er, I shouldn't have looked. Just been on the Hounds First site. They have some beautiful dogs in at the moment.

PatTheHammer · 18/02/2014 17:36

Ooh, look at Maisie with her little handbag on hounds first. How can anyone resist those eyes!

PeanutPatty · 18/02/2014 17:48

Hounds First have an active FB page as does Greyhound Gap and Birmingham Greyhound Protection. GG has a minimum age limit wrt children in the home and I think it's either 4 or 6 but that is because most hounds are pounders with no known history so that is understandable.

mistlethrush · 19/02/2014 06:59

Lurcher Link is where we got ours from - they are very determined not to place a dog with a family it is likely not to be suitable for. I like the fact that they suggest that you foster the dog to start with to see how the dog and the family get on. The lurcher link forum is the best place to look at their dogs and bet lurchery advice. They don't have a minimum age of child that they will home a dog to - but they won't allow just 'any' dog to go into that home.

Scuttlebutter · 19/02/2014 08:41

EGLR have a useful feature on their website which allows you to search according to whether the dog is good with DC, cats etc. They don't have a blanket policy on DC, but sensibly take it on a dog by dog basis, and most have been fostered so a good assessment can be developed.

mistlethrush · 19/02/2014 09:14

Scuttle - its why I like so many of the pointy rescues - they do try to get their dogs out into homes to see how they settle which gives them the best chance... although ours wasn't fostered and had never been in a house before she came to us and she's still lovely!

PeanutPatty · 19/02/2014 09:50

I've noticed many hounds live in pairs or more and from rescue pics they seem to love to snuggle up together. I'm wondering whether our dog will be keen to co sleep with a pointy or prefer sleeping solo.

PatTheHammer · 19/02/2014 10:11

Peanutpatty- I keep looking at photos of two hounds cuddled up and wondering if Dee would really love a cuddle buddy. I'm sure she would as she sleeps cuddled up to her toys and/or us.

Still, I think it will take us having her for about a year first before I can talk DH into another. He thinks we've been very lucky and doesn't believe me when I say she is a typical pointy and most of them will be as gentle and chilled out as she is.

mistlethrush · 19/02/2014 10:13

Peanut - mine likes to lie next to me - but is really quite touch about potentially getting squashed, so I don't think she would really snuggle up like some do - she would need to put a 'safe' bit of her against any other dog which wouldn't be the same... I'm sure that they will sort themselves out in any case.

(fingers crossed Wink)

PatTheHammer · 19/02/2014 10:15

EGLR and Lurcherlink were both great when we spoke to them. eGLR didn't actually have any greyhounds at the time we spoke to them so they gave us the number for GRWE but the lady was lovely and helpful.
The local Lurcherlink lady was also lovely, we had already been matched with Dee when she rang but she was really interested and rang us back to see how it had gone when we adopted. She also gave us loads of advice and was so helpful considering we weren't taking one of their dogs.

mistlethrush · 19/02/2014 10:16

No one on the LL forum minds where you've got the lurcher (or other pointy dog) from if you need advice on the forum etc - all they worry about is getting it right for the dog!

PatTheHammer · 19/02/2014 10:30

I think it's great Mistle, it just shows that they care so much about dogs and getting the right homes for dogs in need.

PeanutPatty · 19/02/2014 10:51

I agree. For us it's all about temperament and fit with out family dynamics. Other features are secondary - colour, coat, gender etc.
