Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound ).

Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I’m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don’t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

Miggs, I think you are approaching this in a really sensible way. As you've found, lots of greyhound rescues organise regular events/walks to come and meet the dogs, so it's a great idea to come on a few of these, and get to know the dogs, and chat to a few owners. Most greyhound owners are a really friendly bunch, and are only too happy to share their experiences. It's also lovely, once you've adopted one, that there are so many family friendly low-cost activities to do - you'll probably find yourself making lots of new friends. Most rescues have regular walks, picnics, fun shows in the summer, indoor playdates etc. For instance on Sunday we'll be going along to a local equestrian centre for a regular sighthound playgroup and greyhound agility session - there are quite a few families who attend with DC and have a whale of a time.

Top tip - most greyhounds walk very nicely on the lead, so small DC do brilliantly with them in Child Handler classes at fun dog shows! Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 04/02/2014 17:46

Yep I have a 33kg greyhound and 11kg whippet x, I let the kids walk the greyhound :)

mistlethrush · 05/02/2014 00:03

I will be going racing with the dog (and DS and probably DH) on Saturday - and DS has entered a couple of 'child handler' classes and not done too badly.

PatTheHammer · 05/02/2014 12:42

Hoping for a 'lull' in the storm today to get out and walk Dee. She is curled up on the sofa not showing the slightest inclination.

Also not a morning dog. DH takes her out about 6.50 ish and she has to be pushed down the stairsGrin she then comes in and goes straight back to sleep. Weekends her first walk is usually 8.30 am and she is so much happier.

We had the most wonderful experience of fox-shit body wrap on Monday morning. Delightful!

monkeyfacegrace · 05/02/2014 15:01

Argh, my puppy is whining lots today. Ive done some recall and sit training. Ive fed her. We have played 'tug'. I have chatted to her Hmm. I cant walk her as its literally pouring down and has been all day. Ive hidden treats in a small cardboard box for her to get.

How can I entertain her?

CMOTDibbler · 05/02/2014 15:38

How about trying some trick training?

Cmotdog was not impressed when it started raining while we were out running today. On Monday he ran 15km with me and was still super bouncy when we got home.

mistlethrush · 05/02/2014 18:40

monkeyface - ours goes out in the rain in a coat... and DS is dragged around (well, gambols in front) too.

monkeyfacegrace · 05/02/2014 19:10

Monkeypup is only 10weeks and apparently scared of rain Hmm

Oh, and she has also decided today that my rugs in the living room and dining room are for weeing on. I must have cleared up 6/7 puddles today. And those are the ones I caught her doing.

cinnamongreyhound · 05/02/2014 19:42

Sounds like Lola CMOTDibbler, she will run 13 miles and still be bounding in and out of the trees!!!

Lola hates the rain so I think I'll get her a rain coat monkeyfacegrace, peanut loves all water so not problem for him!

CMOTDibbler · 05/02/2014 19:48

If the weather isn't minging at the weekend, we're planning on going up on the hills and I'm tempted to attach my gps watch to cmotdogs harness and find out how far and fast he goes. It will be interesting to find out the multiplier of human distance.

Raincoats - does anyone know where you can get a just waterproof coat from? We have blizzard ones with thermal lining, but he'd be too hot running in it (even at mum speed)

mistlethrush · 05/02/2014 20:04

We got one of these for out last dog, and our current one wears it when its wet but not cold - its a bit short for her but I don't think that your dog is quite as long as mine!

CMOTDibbler · 05/02/2014 20:30

No, he's positively tiny compared to yours!

CMOTDibbler · 05/02/2014 20:42

Ah, have just seen that Milgi will have raincoats from next week! Now just to decide which colour

PeanutPatty · 05/02/2014 20:46

CMOT I would be very interested to know how far CMOTdog runs.

In terms of finding a hound, it's all got a bit complicated. Let's just say we are at a stalemate.

cinnamongreyhound · 05/02/2014 21:06

I should probably have said after I've done 13 miles, Lola has done more but I'm too worried about losing my Garmin to try it :) I saw that too CMOTDibbler, I've emailed to express my interest as requested!

Sorry to hear that peanutpatty

mistlethrush · 06/02/2014 08:47

Those milgi coats are lovely! I think the purple one is wonderful - but it really wouldn't suit mine (although I think yours could pull it off CMot)

CMOTDibbler · 06/02/2014 11:49

Its the purple one that I want Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 08/02/2014 19:36

Urgh... today started so well had a lovely morning walk then the rain and WIND arrived! What a horrible day! My poor Lola keeps hiding when we go near her lead, dh took her out Friday and she actually sat down in the middle of the forest. Hoping to go for a nice dry run tomorrow.

Any dog news peanutpatty?

mistlethrush · 08/02/2014 19:49

You get the purple one CMot - I'll get one of the others... then we can meet up on a wet day sometime and have even more people going Shock at TWO pointies together, in FASHION!!!! Grin

mistlehound and I went racing today - she'd had a nice walk earlier when we'd met an 8 wk old westie cross with a jackrussle cross (absolutely beautiful) then got picked on by a greyhound (owner too far away) (mistlehound was being defensive - but she's toothy when she's defensive (I was trying to get between them to avoid anything happening as mine won't 'go' for a dog, but she'll defend herself - and when the greyhound was caught it had a nick on its nose - I apologised although I don't think it would have needed a vet visit and it definitely wasn't mistlehound's fault). Racing she had an extra race (only short though) by accident - then the next race she went round with the dog that had been her kennel mate in the rescue - the two of them barged at the start, then went round the track shoulder to shoulder - they weren't worrying about the lure, just running against each other. Then she actually won the longer race she did (really unusual!!!). It was bitterly cold though - particularly in the wind.

cinnamongreyhound · 09/02/2014 18:19

Sounds like lovely racing and sorry about your greyhound experience!

I saw a discussion on the scruples fb page about whether whippets need coats or not as usual with these things people have very strong opinions!

We had a lovely 6 mile run today but Lola didn't want to come back out with me to do the last 4 miles after I dropped peanut home!

PeanutPatty · 09/02/2014 23:09

Hi everyone,

Mistle so sorry to hear about the incident with the grey Sad Racing sounds fun though.

Cinnamon - no pointy update as yet. Will be sure to reveal as and when, though at times I have wondered whether its more of a case of "if"! Things are looking a touch more positive at the moment. So near yet so far.

mistlethrush · 10/02/2014 07:21

Cinnamon - I think, surely, it's a case of, if your whippet has a very thin coat and they are cold when out, you put a coat on them. If they have a nice thick coat, you don't.... We had a whippety lurcher when I was growing up - for years she didn't have a coat, then she got a rain coat. When she was really quite old I knitted her a jumper - and she would wear that under her raincoat if it was really cold.

Our lufcher is quite rough coated - but its whispy and not particularly 'thick' - she has a warm fleece lined raincoat for the winter - we're going to get her a fleece for when its dry but really cold - we want something that helps to keep her underside warm as she has very thin fur underneath - and we're going to get a thin raincoat for when its just wet,,, very tempted by the Milgi ones!

cinnamongreyhound · 10/02/2014 07:44

The lady wrote that he whippet spent the whole time running and trying to get its coat off so other posters said she should just take it off and they don't all need them. There were then a couple who were very insistent they they ALL needed coats :)

cinnamongreyhound · 10/02/2014 07:45

Really should read before I post! her whippet and rubbing not running!

mistlethrush · 10/02/2014 09:10

Clearly, her whippet really didn't like coats - or didn't like THAT coat... I wouldn't want a dog to be unhappy in a coat - ours have tolerated them as a better option than getting cold / wet. Coats were DEFINITELY required on Saturday - I only had a thin one for mistlehound but it meant that it kept the wind off which was the main thing - underneath it she was nice and warm, which was important given she was running.
