New thread, because quite frankly I can't do without you all :)

OP posts:

Tsk tsk Moose's DH!

I saw a Morphy Richards one in Argoose that said it could do carpets.... I can't see how it works if they don't suck up or have I got that wrong. HSS Hire have carpet cleaners on day hire for £16 so that maybe the way to go. Thanks.

SallyBear · 09/01/2014 08:53

Maybe I need a cold cleaner for the carpet. Or maybe I just ring chemdry.... Thanks.

moosemama · 09/01/2014 11:49

I think the idea is that the steam sterilises the carpet fibres. Basically they just glide over the surface and pump steam into the carpet. Most of the reviews I've read say they don't thing it has made much difference when people have tried it.

SallyBear · 09/01/2014 13:00

Just borrowed the MILs Vax steam cleaner, apart from being covered in dog hair I don't think it's worked. Bugger. Maybe ringing chemdry or the insurance company. Hmm

mintchocchick · 10/01/2014 14:02

I wish I'd seen your post earlier Sally as I just replied on your thread and might have saved you that work.

Is. Toby OK now? Our puppies diarrhoea is still present but only outside now at least.

SallyBear · 10/01/2014 14:19

Smile Minty!
It's ok honest. I'm resigned to getting the study done professionally, and it was a good excuse to replace the old rug with something more modern and contemporary. He's definitely a lot better, got another three days on the antibiotics but back to his usual smiley self. Sorry that your puppy has been unwell too - just keep him off the carpet!!! Grin

mintchocchick · 10/01/2014 15:14

Oh yes, when ours was bad he was totally limited to kitchen, no trips to sitting room at all!

He's loads better now though so is back trying to leap up on sofa while no one is looking! He has no idea how big he actually is!

Don't you love the personality kicking in at 6 months! We are laughing so much about minty now he's developing his true self - he has zero interest in tea towels, kitchen towels or cloths but let him near the oven gloves, now that's another matter! He goes for them, grabs, head up high, ears back and he makes a mad run for it out the back door. Leaves me pissing myself laughing till I remember I only have two pairs and the other is sitting by the washing machine door waiting to be washed after similar incident day before!

SallyBear · 10/01/2014 16:13

Toby likes to leave neat piles of shredded tissue all over the house. He also likes to amuse himself with a squeaky toy spinning in circles. Nutter.

moosemama · 10/01/2014 17:33

Pip is driving me crackers constantly emptying his toybox all over the living room floor, then shredding any cardboard that might have been hidden within. I must tidy it all up at least a dozen times a day.

We have done a brave thing and put the crate away today. Someone said something on another thread about clingy dogs and SA about trying giving them more freedom and seeing how that goes. I had been thinking that he is possibly yelling due to being confined, rather than me leaving, so we're going to trial it over the weekend and see how it goes.

His face when I folded his crate up was a real picture - he looked totally incredulous. Then I got our second xl dog bed out and made it all squishy and comfortable for him before encouraging him in. First thing he did was look up at the ceiling with a 'oooo - that's a long way up' kind of look, but after snaffling some fish paste smeared inside a kong, having a bit of fuss and being tucked in with his favourite blanket and toy, he snuggled down and went to sleep in it for a couple of hours. He's chosen to sleep in there most of the afternoon, so it's looking hopeful.

Planning a couple of long walk with just me and the dogs this weekend. Need to get out while I can, as ds2 sprouted his very first chickenpox blister overnight, so that's us stuck indoors with dark, lead walks for the next week - and by then I expect ds1 to have come down with in.

Forgot to say, ds1 is doing dog-training for his weekly enrichment activity afternoon at school this term. He's had one lesson so far, covering basic dog awareness and safety and I can't stop him talking about dog behaviour! Grin He's swiped a couple of my smaller dog behaviour books to read as well, so he can be the star pupil next week. Currently reading Turid Rugaas On Talking Terms With Dogs as his bedtime reading. Apparently they are going to be working up to doing some agility. This week the trainer brought her own dogs, but apparently they will be working with dogs that have been assessed as suitable from a local rescue, which is lovely. Just hope he doesn't get too attached and want to adopt one! It makes such a nice change to be able to talk to him about something other than computers and the interminable Minecraft. Grin

basildonbond · 10/01/2014 17:48

Help!! I have a teenager (well dog version, already have two human versions, joy ..)

Both walks today Fitz has run off after dogs and gone "yeah? Whatevs" when I've called him back - he has come back eventually but looked at my smelly hotdog chunks and thought "yawn". He's also been humping everything in sight and (sob) has stopped sleeping during the day

Ironically he's been perfectly behaved at puppy class - sat, waited and recalled like a dream so at least he didn't show me up last night ...

SallyBear · 10/01/2014 17:57

We bought a mahoosive crate in November. He's not been left in it since the 16th Dec as DH has been home. So he's been using it as another bed area. I'm hoping that when DH has some UK travel that Toby will be ok in it, but I don't know what's worse; Toby being anxious in a crate or the fact that he could destroy things in the house and possibly injure himself if left out if the crate.

moosemama · 10/01/2014 18:13

Join the club basil ... pants isn't it. Sad

No humping from Pip - yet, although I am very mean and issue an interrupter if my dogs so much as look at their 'bits', so I've probably repressed him! Grin

Sally, Pip was happy to sleep in his and go in and out all day. He wasn't averse to his crate, in fact he loved it - he just yelled the place down as soon as he finished his kongs if he was locked in. I am really expecting him to just move his yelling to the dog gate, but we shall see.

I really would love him to not need it anymore, as our house is pretty small and his crate is homungous and took up most of the floor-space in the kitchen. It feels positively spacious in there with just the dog bed in it's place, even though the actual floorspace it takes up is very similar.

NCISaddict · 10/01/2014 18:18

Finn was a nightmare at training(our first one of the new course) last night, humping one of the trainers legs, gazing around like he'd never heard the word sit. Of course all the other dogs behaved perfectly. Blush
Today he has been the perfect dog, taking himself off to his crate for a nap and doing everything I asked in all our training sessions. Why can't he do that at training?

moosemama · 10/01/2014 18:53

He was just getting the measure of the new class NCIS. He's obviously planning to wow them all at the next session, when he demonstrates an impressive 100% improvement with a flourish! Grin

NCISaddict · 10/01/2014 18:56

That must be it. If he doesn't start at a low point, how can he get better so he holds something in reserve.

moosemama · 10/01/2014 19:01

Exactly. Wink

SallyBear · 10/01/2014 19:07

Toby has been humping Mr Snickerdoodles (cuddly you donated by ds3) since he was about 12 weeks! Fortunately that is all he humps!

SallyBear · 10/01/2014 19:07

*toy!

NCISaddict · 10/01/2014 19:09

Horrendously embarrassing though isn't it, makes me look as if I've never attempted to train him at all in the last 4 months, little wretch.(Typed whilst tickling his tummy as he snoozes on my lap) Smile

moosemama · 10/01/2014 19:21

I've never had a humper - I really do think I must repress my poor male dogs!

NCIS, Pip did something similar at dog club this week. Did most things fine then acted as if I'd never taught him how to do sit-down-sit up-stand and when I finally got him doing it, lay there when I asked him to stand, flopped onto one hip, yawned at me and started to nod off! Hmm Grin

basildonbond · 10/01/2014 19:58

Oh yes the other problem is he's really gone off his crate :( still happy to go in it at night but will not settle during the day at all - wolfs his kongs at record speed then as soon as they're gone starts crying and barking

His routine has gone to pot with everyone being at home for Christmas so he's hardly been on his own at all ... Am I going to be able to get him to be happy in his crate again or should we just ditch it now?

mintchocchick · 10/01/2014 20:09

We have lot of humping here too - mainly to DS1s leg, when he gets in from school. He is a young type of 13 yr old so I don't really know if he knows what the dog is doing and I'm not quite up to explaining Blush
I need to think of a jokey way! I just push dog off him and send him outside - dog not teenager!

mintchocchick · 10/01/2014 20:14

Sounds like fun at puppy class you your puppies! Sort of choosing when to do as they're told! The advantage of not taking the puppy to class is no one knows how wilful / well trained / naughty the puppy is! I would prefer to be taking him though as noone is bothered what anyone else's puppy is doing - I fact I think it's so intense with your own puppy, that you don't really have a chance to look up and watch the others.

Third prescription of anti-biotics been prescribed for mintys Giardia tonight as he is still poorly Sad. Sleeping lots in day but maybe this will pass when he's better. Didn't realise teenage dogs slept less - quite funny really as I'm struggling to get my human teenager to sleep at night!!

moosemama · 10/01/2014 20:49

Basil that sounds very similar to Pip. He was doing so well prior to Christmas, but ds1 broke up the second week in December and didn't go back until mid-week this week and he can't seem to leave Pip alone for two minutes. Dd has been off sick all week and now it looks like both boys have the dreaded pox as well, so we are really struggling, as I've had to have someone to sit with dd while I took ds2 to and from school, because she was contagious - so he hasn't been left at all in weeks really.

Mum had dd for school runs last week, but said he started yelling before he'd even finished his kongs - hence me trying something completely different and seeing how he does without his crate.

If you go back to basics and build up the time gradually he should settle in it again. Depends if you feel he still needs it I suppose. I am looking at another two weeks of the dses being home and by then it will have been almost two months since he was in a routine of being left regularly. So annoying when I worked so hard with him on it. Hmm

Sorry to hear Minty is still poorly. Hope the third lot of antibiotics is the one to finally stop the Giardia in it's tracks.

basildonbond · 10/01/2014 23:10

Hope the poorly puppies and poorly dc start to feel better soon

I now have the incredible non-sleeping pup Hmm

He's had a very small snooze and is now wide awake chewing on his antler - I want to go to bed!!!
