Is there such a thing? One that loves everyone and everything? I would have said labs but I know some that hate other dogs so I'm not sure now! ( fantisising over my next dog as alandog hates all new people and all dogs)..

I am also looking at something similar but I was wondering about a pug/beagle/puggle and if anyone knows how they are with young children?

daisylulu · 03/11/2013 22:07

Cocker spaniel (show type not working who need far more exercise. Love mine to bits and she's a perfect patient little family member to my 2 yo DD Smile

TooManyButtons · 04/11/2013 10:42

My 5 month old cocker spaniel pup ticks all your boxes. He's adorable, affectionate, easy to train, and so happy - I've seen someone on here say every day's Christmas Day to a cocker spaniel and that's so true.

He's a show type rather than a worker, so he's happy to just play with his toys when we're busy, and if the weather's too grim to attempt a walk he doesn't complain. And he's good with children. He's ace.

Can the one hour walking be offlead with lots of ball throwing?
Apart from this my Springer would meet your criteria. He adores children, all children. We have had to work on him not licking them unless he knows them Blush He loves everyone actually and is brilliant with other dogs and small animals (lives with a rabbit and guinea pig)
A really fun dog for kids as he will chase a ball or play football for hours and is obedient enough that my 6 year old can make him join in her games :-D
He was a doddle to train as he is so clever and desperate to please.
Perfectly happy snuggling on the sofa though, preferably on someones lap. Bad points are mud, mud and mud

Whippets Grin

Loving, cuddly, gentle, mischievous, comical, lazy and surprisingly biddable. An hour a day of exercise would be more than enough, 30 minutes of off lead walking is enough to satisfy mine for the day. Ridiculously easy to groom, they're basically wipe clean dogs. The vast majority of their time is spent sleeping, preferably upside down on the comfiest piece of furniture in the house.

Sunflower6 · 04/11/2013 17:42

Teaandcakeordeath

My mother in law has two pugs and they adore children and children adore them.

Moxiegirl · 04/11/2013 17:46

Bichon/cavalier King Charles cross-doesn't shed and perfect temperament with children.

BOF · 04/11/2013 17:48

Cavaliers, definitely, but see if you can get one from the Cavalier Rescue site.

CinnabarRed · 04/11/2013 17:50

I've never known a nasty Cavalier, and they've all been more than happy to sleep!

LELoupee · 04/11/2013 17:50

We have a Staffie-Lab X from the rescue.
Would tick all the things on your list.

MrsBennetsEldest · 04/11/2013 17:54

PinkFairy that's a brilliant description of a Whippet.
Mine refuse to go out for a walk if it's raining and will walk around wet patches/ puddles rather than get their feet wet.

DystopianReality · 04/11/2013 17:57

King Charles Cavalier, without any doubt whatsoever.

Tillypo · 04/11/2013 18:10

Teaandcakeordeath. My advice stay away from Beagles I have one she is the most lovinglittle thing in the world grest with kids and other people and dogs. However she she is a complete and utter nightmare for trying to escape I don't open the front door if somebody calls in case they haven't closed the gate as she would be off, don't let her off the lead when walking because she would go she gets a scent and is off. You can't leave anything on the worktops because she bounces like a kangaroo to get food off the side. Shoes, socks, bras, pants are all her favorite and she runs off with any of them to chew. Apart from that they are lovely dogs, but I would never, never, never have another one.

LadyTurmoil · 04/11/2013 18:53

My foster dog is the perfect dog! Really, she is so easy, loves people and children, after an hour's walk today she was happy to go to sleep for a few hours. Loves to play with other dogs, is cautious and respectful with new dogs but then bounds around with them - she went off lead after 3 weeks so I can let her off in the park now which is fantastic.

I'm sure she'd love another dog in the house but, if not, meeting dogs in the park every day. Pictures on profile Smile

williaminajetfighter · 04/11/2013 19:16

If you're looking for a small breed I have two chihuahuas who are brilliant with my DD - gentle but fun, never nippy or barky and love to be held and petted. They are also litter trained!!

lainiekazan · 05/11/2013 13:04

I had read that Golden Retrievers were boring - ha bloody ha...

My GR is affectionate, cuddly, a good foot warmer and greets family members returning home as if they've been away fighting in a war for five years. It is heart-warming when you see him siting and peering through the front door awaiting the arrival home from school of ds or dh in the evenings.

He is also large, hairy, a bit farty, boisterous (sometimes too boisterous) and a terrible thief.

PumpingRSI · 06/11/2013 09:26

Teaandcake - I have 2 pugs and a baby. They are amazing with him. And I wouldn't consider any other type of dog BUT:
They moult
They want to be with you and preferably sat on you 24 hrs a day
Can be hard to train and house train
Are v licky
Expensive to buy and insure
Some have health problems tho nome are v healthy and love ling walks a couple if times a day.

Research the breed and understand that they are far from the low maintenance lap dog they are billed as.
one of my dogs is needier and higher maintenance than my baby. Other one not so much. I do feel like I have 3 kids. But with their friendly, fun, characterful nature and loyal companionship and unquestionable love I wouldn't have it any other day. Basically they are far from a sink into the background of family life type dog, they are right at the front

PumpingRSI · 06/11/2013 09:30

Sorry about my spelling. I sound like the policeman from 'Allo Allo but am trying to type whilst feeding baby porridge and fending off the pug-vultures...

OnaPromise · 06/11/2013 09:34

Get a rescue dog which has been in a foster with a family and you will know what it is like in a home.

HormonalHousewife · 06/11/2013 09:34

Some one upthread said they had never seen a nasty cavalier.

Well I had one as a child.

She was lovely with us, but could give a nip to others (my little cousin in particular) when the mood took her.

I guess that just goes to show that there is sadly no perpetually friendly family dog.

lainiekazan · 06/11/2013 09:54

Cavaliers can be awfully smelly. They lick a lot and cover their fur with dog breath. Nice dogs otherwise, but I rejected this breed because the smell of the ones I've encountered made me retch.

clam · 06/11/2013 18:23

Well, most of us are biased towards what dog we have slumped at our feet while we type.

So I'll put my two-pennorth in: cockapoo! Nicest temperament in the world. I know a LOT of other owners through a saddo club and everyone says the same.
