New Puppy Mummies Part 2

Just thought I'd start the new thread!

Toby (foxy coloured yellow Labrador) is now 13 weeks old. Long, lean and lanky. Still wonderfully tempered and is sleeping through and no longer messing in the house.

Our puppy, going to call him minty from now on, has just been retching and bringing up white frothy stuff. Eating it straight away then retching again.

Did it about 10 times in just a few minutes, now back on his bed settled.

He hasn't had breakfast yet, just been in garden for wee, no pottering in garden either. I let him out for wee and was thinking he'd go back for another little sleep so kids will stay in bed till 730/8. But do t want to leave him now.

Any ideas what it could be?

basildonbond · 19/10/2013 08:40

Mint - has he got anything stuck in his mouth/throat? It sounds like he's gagging on something

Yay! No poo overnight - hurrah! I came down at 7 and he was still all snuggled up in bed - hopped outside for a wee and a poo and then went back to bed :)

DharmaLovesDraco · 19/10/2013 09:18

How is puppy now Mint? Has he eaten yet?

All good here, puppy is 13 weeks weighs 15kgs and still has to be carried for the next week!

Haven't had any accidents for ages, still biting but getting better. He is chewing anything and everything but it's too soon for teething isn't it?

Heifer · 19/10/2013 09:24

Mint, that is exactly what Pepsi was doing, and the vet said she has kennel cough, so well worth visiting your vet.....

Heifer · 19/10/2013 09:27

sorry, posted too soon.

I thought Pepsi had something stuck in her throat, but it wasn't causing her any breathing problems and she would cough then stop for hours at a time. She also produced white frothy stuff.

We caught it really early I think as she seems fine, but has had runny eyes and the odd sneeze.

Hope yours is ok.

Heifer · 19/10/2013 09:28

I thought she was retching but apparently it was coughing.

basildonbond · 19/10/2013 09:35

Oof dharma, that's heavy - Fitz is 13 weeks but 8 kilos and I thought that was bad enough! People keep saying "oh he's going to be big" and I just think you have no idea what big is...

SallyBear · 19/10/2013 10:00

Toby's litter had Kennel Cough at 6 weeks. Antibiotics for a few days and cleared up no problem. Hope Minty sees the vet today. We are off to the vet today, as I think that maybe he has an allergy of some sort.

OP posts:
mintchocchick · 19/10/2013 10:11

Actually minty seems fine now. I kept an eye on him and didn't feed him till 830 (usual time is 730). Then as there was no more retching I fed him, he gobbled as usual and out for poo, all normal. Very odd.

It was definitely retching though as I could see his stomach near his back legs churning, so coming from lower region.

Heifer - glad you mentioned kennel cough though as he had his vaccine for it this week and as it's a live vaccine, the vet warned me that he might get a cough or sneeze. Not done that but this sick thing could be a reaction.

All fine now, plans back on now for a trip to DS1s hockey match and walk while match is on. Funny watching all the other players being so adoring to minty and DS1 stands there, being all cool as though "yeah, it's my puppy, no biggie" when I know he's delighted with all the attention!

mintchocchick · 19/10/2013 10:13

Meant to say - thanks - really helps to have advice / ideas and just to share concerns. DS2 was a bit freaked out by the retching, but I was able to say, don't worry I've asked fellow puppy mums for their advice!

sweetkitty · 19/10/2013 12:44

Dharma - 15kgs wow what kind of dog is he again I lose track of everyone's breeds? Nala is 13 weeks and 9 kgs and that's bad enough she's been down for 2 weeks now.

Did a 20 min lead walk today around a busy road as she's terrified of cars, was hard work with her pulling but if we keep at it hopefully she'll get better

moosemama · 19/10/2013 13:28

Sally, of course - onions! Honestly men! Hmm

Sorry to hear of all the poorly pups. Hope they're all better soon.

Pip's new collar has finally arrived. (Will try and get a photo on later.) Apparently it's been sitting at the sorting office. They are truly awful at our local one. I had a card saying I had a 'signed for parcel' to collect on Tuesday. I knew the only thing that was sent signed for was a length of ribbon and couldn't get to the sorting office so left it until today. In the meantime they have stockpiled all my other parcels instead of delivering them, so when dh went to collect the ribbon this morning I ended up with 5 parcels. Angry Even worse is that they would all have fitted through my letter box.

We have the same problem every year. I have to order Christmas presents online, as I can't drive and am often not well enough for marathon Christmas shopping trips. Every year lots of parcels go missing and they stockpile others. I complain every year, but nothing is ever done about it. Angry

Looking at the postmark, Pip could/should have had his new collar in time for his first puppy class, if the Post Office had done their job properly. Angry

Sorry, feeling a bit ranty this morning for various reasons. Blush

SallyBear · 19/10/2013 13:39

Well it looks like we are getting Toby allergy tested as he's definitely got something that's irritating him. Also on a course of drops for ear mites. The vet said that whatever I was feeding him was doing the trick, but she felt it was worth testing incase he's allergic to either beef or chicken or something in the mixer that I put in. I told her all about the Burns puppy traumas and that he'd had a nasty bout of worms at 10 weeks. So we will try the allergy testing, get some answers and then work on it. She did suggest a six week hypoallergenic diet but really don't want to be arsing about with his food.

OP posts:
moosemama · 19/10/2013 13:52

Oh Sally what a shame, poor Toby.

As I've said before, Oldgirl was highly atopic, but we kept it under control with a raw diet and your homecooked diet should do just as well if you can identify which meats to avoid.

Pip's hypoallergenic diet was just cooked chicken and/or white fish several times a day, no faffing, but I guess that was the easy bit. It would be reintroducing potential allergens one at a time and recording the results that would be a pita. Beef is a likely candidate as an allergen.

If his ears were ok last week, what has he had that's different this week?

SallyBear · 19/10/2013 14:48

Chicken! He had left over roast chicken. There's me trying to keep it fresh and varied..... sigh. At least I know it's not the onions and tomatoes! DH apologised profusely for that.

Hi everyone (waves) can i join in? Puppy arrived last night Shih Tzu cross. Called Pixie after much arguements in the car!! she is 12 weeks so booked in for her first set of jabs on Monday.

We rehomed her so we are a little behind with everything. Im not to sure how much to feed her ?? little amounts three times a day? She arrived with Bakers dry food but she couldnt get it in her mouth so i swapped it this mng to wet puppy food and she loves it and is so happy today! She smells a little, can i bathe her yet or too soon?

moosemama · 19/10/2013 15:50

Welcome stirrupleathers. Hope Pixie brings as much fun and laughter into your household as Pip has to ours. Smile

We had similar arguments about names, although we were picking him up on our way home from holiday, so had two weeks of arguments! Pip was dh's choice and I was adamant all holiday that it wouldn't be his name. Seems Pip had other ideas. Hmm Grin

I favour keeping them on 4 meals a day up to 6 months. You did right to get her off Bakers, but may find she develops a bit of an upset tum from the sudden change. It's usually preferable to gradually add more and more of the new food into the old food over a week or so, until they're completely on the new one, as it's easier for their digestion to adjust.

She's not to young for a bath if she's smelly, but perhaps let her settle in for a few days first.

stirrupleathers · 19/10/2013 16:29

Hi moosemama, we were gng to call her pip! But it got changed at the last minute!! I would have gradulally changed her food but she wasnt eating any of the Bakers so I jumped. Oh no hope she doesnt have a yukky bum tomorrow (can u not buy doggy nappies?:)

I have let her into the garden a couple of times, just a run on the grass is that ok? X

moosemama · 19/10/2013 16:37

Now you see Pip would be a lovely name for a Shih Tzu cross, but my Pip (pics on profile, but out of date by a good few weeks) is going to be huuuuge and I am going to feel very silly when people ask me what his name is. He's already only a couple of inches off the height of our older Lurcher and will still only be 2/3rds of his final height when he's 6 months old - and that's not till December! Shock

She's fine going into the garden, as long as it's secure and there's nothing out there she could eat or injure herself on. If you're wanting to toilet train her you'll need to go with her every time and reward her for doing her business outside until she gets the message that it's more rewarding to do it out there than indoors.

moosemama · 19/10/2013 16:51

Just decided to measure both dogs. Lurcherboy is 24" to the shoulder - Pip is already 21 and a bit inches and growing like a weed! Shock

SallyBear · 19/10/2013 17:26

Lanky Pip!! Just measured Toby and he is 15.5inches to the shoulder.

Did anyone see the sad post about the cocker pup being attacked? He died of his injuries after emergency surgery. So sad.

OP posts:
picnicinthewoods · 19/10/2013 18:20

I think both pip and pixie are great names:) I wanted to call ours 'Bear' but got outvoted!

SallyBear, I just read that thread, it made me cry:( so sad. As we all have puppies, I wonder how we avoid this kind of thing? Kind of makes you never want to let them off the lead.

Seems rather insensitive to bring up something else so trivial, but just wondered how much exercise your pups get? I was advised not to exercise my pup (GR), something to do with developing joints? But obviously I take him out to socialise every day, so how long should this daily session last? how much walking is ok? He just went completely mental around the house, digging outside, barking etc He doesn't really have much interest in playing with toys and will only do training sessions for about 5 mins before wondering off bored. I'm thinking, more walking then?

moosemama · 19/10/2013 18:39

He's literally all legs though - nothing to the rest of him at all. He's so narrow compared to Lurcherboy too. Lurcherboy has a broad chest, I guess from his Deerhound heritage, but Pip is in an extra small chest-piece for his harness and he can slip out of that if he has a mind to.

Picnic, I had a 'Bear' once. She was expected to grow enormous due to having ridiculously large paws. She never did - she just had ridiculously large paws for the whole of her life.

We never seem to get names right proportionally to the size of our dogs. Blush

Re exercise. The guide is 5 minutes for each month of life for sustained on-lead walking, but they can have off lead running on top as long as it's on soft ground.

moosemama · 19/10/2013 18:40

Oh my word, how terribly sad about the little Cocker pup. I read the thread yesterday and didn't go back because the last I read the OP said he was just bruised.

I don't know how you'd ever get over something like that. Sad

SallyBear · 19/10/2013 18:41

Vague rule of thumb is 5mins per month of life. Toby is 17 weeks. He's normally walked once a day for about 30 mins. He's happy with that for now.
