Waterproofing my dog

Pizpup and I are currently very happily curled up on the sofa together watching the rain and not even contemplating going outside until it stops. We've both been totally spoilt by the long warm summer and he's been loving his walks but now the weather's less predictable he's putting on his sad face whenever there's a bit of wet in the air.

Last winter he was a tiny puppy and I made do with one wax jacket for him and one pull-over fleece. Problem with the wax jacket was that a) his tummy is so low to the ground (half daxie) that he still got cold, soaking and filthy, and b) the jacket got filthy too and I found myself constantly washing and re-waxing it. The pull-on fleece was fab and kept him warm and dry but he hates it going over his head.

We're killing time over the next few days waiting for the arrival of dc1 and I want to find a solution which will mean he's kept warm and dry as possible on walks, but also minimal mess and fuss for me at home as I'm sure I'll have other things to worry about. Does anyone have any miracle dog coat/jacket recommendations which will revolutionizeour lives?

TThanks!

This? or this, this or maybe this?

They do do full body rain-suits, but not sure I've seen them for dogs with very short legs.

moosemama · 09/09/2013 12:18

rain suit

Floralnomad · 09/09/2013 13:55

Get a dog bag and just sit him in it when you get home until he is dry .

Pizdets · 09/09/2013 14:53

Moosemama, some good suggestions on there, thanks! You're right he has a funny body shape so hard to get stuff to fit. I'm so drawn to the wax jacket as I think they look great but just know they're not practical as they're quite high maintenance! That rain suit might be good as his legs are short but not daxie-short so those cuffs might help.

Floralnomad, I'd forgotten about dog bags but remember looking at them last year, will have a Google. It's a good idea but I need some kind of waterproof too as he hates the rain and will be utterly miserable going out and getting wet! He's not a very doggy dog, really, I think growing up with our 2 cats has made him half-feline!

I use Equafleece jumpers for my terrier ( long legs) as they keep him dry and warm but wash well , its a bit of a problem though if your boy doesn't like having stuff put on over his head . I think you can pay extra and have a zip put in .

digerd · 09/09/2013 16:53

I have a dog that is small/short legs but has thick fur on her legs/paws and chest/tummy.
I bought the one the westie is in on the link, but it was so stiff and made a loud noise. Also she couldn't walk in it with her back legs.
The only one she is comfortable in is the back only plastic red with white plka dots on < she looks so cute in it Smile.

She has a furry head too but cannot find one that has a hood or has full length leg coverage that she can walk in.

digerd · 09/09/2013 16:54

polka dots

digerd · 09/09/2013 17:40

They have lots at Amazon. Just ordered another 2 to try.

Pizdets · 09/09/2013 18:13

Floralnomad, thanks, will look and see if they do a zipped version. Digerd, sounds like you've had as much fun as me trying to find the right coat! Do let me know how you get on - I know pizpup would love a hood as he hates getting his face wet so I'll come back and let you know if I stumble across one!

Here you go: If your dog is very stiff or arthritic a waterproof zip can be added to the back for an extra £9 making the jumper easier to put on and take off. ABSOLUTELY NOT NEEDED FOR NORMAL DOGS. Wink

I get my dachshund's Equafleece over his head so quickly he doesn't seem to notice, seems easier than having straps or zips to fiddle with.

digerd · 10/09/2013 07:33

I have ordered another onesie - just hope she can walk in this one.
I found the cutest padded frilly hooded one in pink, but she doesn't need padding due to her thick furry coat - shame. SadGrin
Today is supposed to be sunny and dry, so she can run free of clobber.

Pizdets · 10/09/2013 08:36

Waaaaa! Love those equafleeces, so cute! It's not the getting over the head so much as then feeding his legs through the leg holes, he hates it. Maybe my technique is wrong? But then my husband is worse - watching him trying to get the fleece on the dog provided non-stop entertainment last winter, god knows how he'll cope when the baby arrives!

Digerd, frilly and pink would undermine pizpup's highly masculine credentials. It's probably best for everyone that I don't have a female dog. Hoping not to crack open the coats for another few weeks at least but with the baby coming soon I don't want to leave it then forget and have an utterly miserable pooch for our first walks out all together if it's cold and wet.

Thanks all for the recommendations, will prob give the doggie onsie and the zipped equafleece a try!

Piz

I have ordered 3 different ones from Amazon - can't wait Grin

A dog, 2 cats and an expected baby - good luckSmile

ErrolTheDragon · 10/09/2013 10:42

Surely it's easier for us to get short dachsie type legs into the holes than people with longer-legged dogs? Let alone babies into a babygro! Grin

Floralnomad · 10/09/2013 11:20

Have you had his back checked as if he has a back problem ,which is possible in a long backed dog , that maybe why you have an issue with getting things on and off .

ErrolTheDragon · 10/09/2013 12:22

Or could be simpler - my previous dachs hated anyone messing with his paws.

Pizdets · 10/09/2013 12:45

Thanks for the suggestions guys. His back is fine (but he's off for his annual checkup on Saturday so I'll ask them to check), he's just a wriggly puppy who doesn't like me messing with his paws or sticking his head into jumpers. He wore the fleece last winter and it was fine but I suppose I'm looking for an easy life! He's actually half dachshund, half poodle, so his proportions are funny - legs not that short, longish back and he's quite 'slim' ie doesn't have a big daxie barrel chest, makes it hard to find things which fit well!

Thanks again for suggestions, much appreciated!

We've got a girl dachsoodle living near us - so cute. Our lad is a bit in love with her Grin.

Pizdets · 10/09/2013 17:39

Oh Dachsoodle, I've not heard that before. The breeder called him a doxiepoo which is hideous. I tend to tell people he's a mongrel!

OP posts:
Floralnomad · 10/09/2013 18:53

I've never seen that cross have you got a picture of him on your profile ? Does he have a curly coat ?

ErrolTheDragon · 10/09/2013 22:36

I don't think I'd heard of it before DD called it that - better than doxiepoo or weeniepoo or any of the strange things Americans call dachshund crossbreeds!Grin The one we know looks like a longer-legged dachshund with a pure black short poodle coat.

I was looking for images online, some of them look like neither dachshund nor poodle, I think sometimes with 'designer crosses' (as opposed to honest mongrels) people get sold the proverbial pup!

Pizdets · 10/09/2013 23:25

Right, think I have put up a pic which I'll leave there for a day or so of you want to see! He has a fairly wiry coat with a bit of a wave but not curly. He basically looks like a diluted dachshund, if it weren't for the fact we met his poodle dad and had health certificates etc I'd struggle to believe it! Think these designer crossed are so hit and miss (i was originally looking for a poodle but got sidetracked) but we're really lucky with how he's turned out. He could be any cute little terrier, to be honest but he does get a lot of attention as he is very cute!

OP posts:
stleger · 10/09/2013 23:38

He is lovely!

LadyTurmoil · 11/09/2013 00:00

Oh pizdets he's gorgeous but not at all what I thought he'd look like from your previous descriptions - hard to see dachshund OR poodle in that mix! But he's lovely Smile

digerd · 11/09/2013 07:11

He does look similar to the wire-haired Dachshunds and a lovely colour.Years ago I had a black and tan long-haired Dachshund and a friend had a wire-haired one that looked like yoursSmile.

Seen lots of designer crosses with poodles. The Maltipoos I have seen are teeny tiny like the dad who is a Maltese terrier despite mum being a Standard Poodle Hmm Grin
