Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound ).

Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I?m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don?t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

I bet he worked out he's already got you under his spell and needed to work on DH!!! Grin

Dropping in to pick your brains again. Shopping for Bob today. What type of grooming brush is best for a grey?

mistlethrush · 07/10/2013 09:27

I would be aiming for something soft but like this I used to get horse curry combs (not the metal ones for cleaning brushes) and use those on short coats and they were great for getting rid of loose fur. We have lots of old towels too - these are really good to leave by the door so that you can wipe (feet particularly) before the dog gets far into the house.

MagratGarlik · 07/10/2013 09:40

We have a grooming mitt rather than a brush. Perfect for short hair.

I'd second the old towels by the door too. We actually use old tea towels to wipe their feet with when they come in. They know they may not venture into the house until feet are clean. They are also spectacular wimps and will expect to be rubbed down after walking in the rain (even when wearing coats).

mistlethrush · 07/10/2013 09:48

Mistlehound is very good with me about having her feet wiped when she comes in - she doesn't enjoy it, but will lift a foot for me nicely. DH got roundly told off at the weekend when he hadn't bothered and we got muddy paw prints on the throws on the sofa, in the hall, on the kitchen carpet, up the stairs and on the landing... Hmm

There was a tantalising plate of marmite on toast crusts on a plate on the coffee table one morning this weekend - I had to remind her a few times, but she managed to restrain herself from eating any of them (in the sitting room) - she got rewarded with the largest in her bowl in the kitchen for that (the rest went in the bin).

FiveHoursSleep · 07/10/2013 09:49

Can anyone recommend some one who makes made-to-measure warm and waterproof coats for dogs? We have a lurcher who won't go out if it's cold and/or rainy as well as a GSD who will, so need a coat for both.
I've tried ready to buy ones but they do not fit hounds very well!

mistlethrush · 07/10/2013 10:12

We've got one of these for our lurcher - its made to measure, and fits nicely, going well over her bum. We've gone for the Cordura as its tougher, but the waterproof gives a softer finish if your lurcher isn't the sort to be going through all the undergrowth. Very good value too.

MagratGarlik · 07/10/2013 11:24

Has anyone seen Lola on the Scruples fb page? I think I'm in love.

mistlethrush · 07/10/2013 11:28

There are some scruffies that I would like first Magrat... I am really surprised some of them haven't been snapped up more quickly (and wish we could have a 2nd)

cinnamongreyhound · 07/10/2013 11:40

I saw her, we saw a couple in scruples but they never got back to me :(. We are not having a third that's for sure!!

We have a grooming mitt too, not sure where I got it from. And also have an old towel that dh lays down in the morning while I'm out or we have footprints everywhere!

MagratGarlik · 07/10/2013 11:41

Dp would have another dog in a flash. I realise though that whilst I like looking at all the pretty dogs, our house is full for now!

mistlethrush · 07/10/2013 11:47

Currently I'm drawn to Polly or, if feeling confident, Colin

Or of course, blackberry the puppy, but can't see how on earth we could manage a puppy...

cinnamongreyhound · 07/10/2013 11:50

I would love a scruffy one day and would like to help a dog in the future that perhaps others wouldn't give a home to. Once the kids have gone and we have more time and hopefully money! Although I do find my two on leads a bit of a nightmare, constantly crossing over each other so a third would be stressful for me I think.

cinnamongreyhound · 07/10/2013 11:51

Polly looks so sad in that photo and I really loved Colin but he's apparently a lot of work. Can't believe blackberry is still available :(

YourHandInMyHand · 07/10/2013 12:10

I know someone with a scruffy that looks a lot like Polly, I think scruffies are adorable. Smile I went for a smooth one though.

Sounds like Colin just needs a stable consistent home with a patient trainer. Hope they both find lovely forever homes.

ShyDog is in the garden munching on a bone and she keeps looking up at me with these gooey eyes. I think she is very grateful. Grin

MagratGarlik · 07/10/2013 12:10

Colin is beautiful, but looks like a lot of work.

I am very strict with my two on the lead, they are not allowed to cross over c and each stays on his/her own side of me. They tend to accept it pretty quickly (until Dp walks them and lets them do their own thing again... Sigh).

I also use a split lead sometimes when walking both dogs and both dc's. I find that works quite well provided they are in harnesses, not collars. Both mine are similar sizes though, Jessie is probably about an inch taller than Woody, but about 6kg heavier -she has whippet height, but greyhound build. We are also still not sure whether he might have a little greyhound blood in him. He looks small next to greyhounds, but is distinctly hefty next to must whippets.

mistlethrush · 07/10/2013 12:13

I think someone's potentially coming for Blackberry - but I think some of the others in the litter are still unaccounted for.. eg Jandals.

I know Colin is meant to be hard work - so was the dog we first got - she was at Dogs Trust, down as needing 'an experienced owner'. Luckily, as I had walked for them for quite some time, and quite often ended up with some of the more difficult ones (one of them by choice, she was absolutely lovely) they thought we'd cope with her (we did - she just needed some training and security). Not everyone would have put up with the nightly waking at 3am to go for a wee - after 6 months she suddenly seemed to decide that she really was secure and didn't need to wake me up anymore and had to be turfed out if it was wet.

cinnamongreyhound · 07/10/2013 12:34

Maybe I need to be stricter with them MagratGarlik! Lola often runs under peanut and she's just generally very lively when on a lead. I don't think she's been walked on a lead much, she's much less pully now. Peanut is a dream on a lead, although he's very nervous if you try to move him and then panics and looks at me like I'm going to kill him!

Scuttlebutter · 07/10/2013 12:58

We've got a grooming mitt. Andy greyhound loves it - will stand there for hours while I go over him with it with this dreamy, cross eyed look of bliss on his face. It was about a fiver and you can get them at PAH and most pet supply stores. One side has bigger pimples than the other.

YY to a supply of doggy towels. We bought a load of cheap ones at Ikea for the dogs and they also have a few fleeces etc which are handy to keep in the car, use for training classes, days out etc.

In fact, Ikea is a suprisingly useful source of stuff! Grin We go there for cheap duvets/duvet covers (usually have lots of these lying around, and a couple in the car), and great for textiles such as cheap towels, fleeces, throws for your sofa etc. Their large size flower pot is also the perfect height to serve as a raised feeder for a steel feeding bowl.

I'd also recommend a supply of Yankee candles (or other scented candle of choice) - greyhound bottoms (especially when settling in, change of diet etc.) are notorious. Ours don't much now, but occasionally they do, just for old time's sake, and it's lethal.

TooOldForGlitter · 07/10/2013 18:42

Thanks for recommendations everyone. Will be getting a grooming mitt tomorrow and have also ordered the rubber brush mistle recommended. Is it vital to have raised feeding stations? Was watching video on RGT website and they showed greys being fed from bowls on floor Confused

TooOldForGlitter · 07/10/2013 18:43

Thats something to look forward to scuttle, between dp and dd and dog i may need recommendations for gas masks!

cinnamongreyhound · 07/10/2013 19:11

I feed mind from the floor.

TooOldForGlitter · 07/10/2013 20:28

Thanks cinnamon

Can i pick your brain a little further? Ive also read its not advised to feed an hour before or after exercise, is this correct?

cinnamongreyhound · 07/10/2013 21:00

Yes :)

TooOldForGlitter · 07/10/2013 21:48
