I took a dog into a big supermarket beginning with T. I did it because I reckoned it was not safe to leave a dog tied up outside. If it became afraid it could bite. Anything could happen. With me, the dog was under control.

Needless to say I was told off. I did something legal but against company policy.

I think these places should have a policy for people who have their dogs with them. It would appear that this is not the case. I am looking into the legal aspects of who is responsible if the dog is left outside, which appears to be a fundamentally bad idea... The carpark is not publically owned land and it is the decision of the landowners to disallow other animals inside.

I think that if shops have a No Dog policy, they should be absolutely clear about where you can leave a dog safely.

Get a muzzle?

WinkyWinkola · 28/08/2013 19:46

Would it not be easier to leave the dog at home when you go to the supermarket?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 28/08/2013 19:47

Leave the dog at home when shopping.

ClaraOswald · 28/08/2013 19:47

There is a sign on the door usually stating that only assistance dogs are allowed in the shop.

cocolepew · 28/08/2013 19:47

Leave your dog at home when you go shopping. That's all people want, dogs pissing in the aisle.

LesserSpottedNeckSnake · 28/08/2013 19:49

I always assume I can't take my dogs in shops. So if I have to go to a shop I just...don't take them. I don't leave them outside shops, either, and I don't want to see dogs in shops really.

GrimmaTheNome · 28/08/2013 19:54

Most supermarkets have a tethering point. Never used one though- either the dog stays at home, or in the car if its cool enough, or if there's more than one of us (eg if we're out for the day popping in for sandwiches) one stays outside with the dog. Some dogs seem OK to be left - these points are usually a bit to one side, not right by the entrance.

The only shop I know which welcomes dogs is Pets at Home - where they don't mind if their four-footed customers pee in the aisle, so long as you let them know to clear it up!

The Big Issue vendor at our local supermarket minds the dogs as well. He should probably charge for it. I don't leave my dog tied up though. I'd just

a) leave him at home
b) send dd into the local shop and stand outside
c) not bother getting any shopping. Although wine shops are usually happy with dogs I've noticed.

gamerchick · 28/08/2013 20:28

I would be royally complaining loudly if a dog was was in the supermarket. What on earth goes through somebody's head to think that's in any way ok?

littlewhitebag · 28/08/2013 20:40

There are many shops i would happily pop into with my dog - a supermarket is NOT one of them.

If everyone was allowed to take dogs into a supermarket it would be horrible, not to mention dangerous with dogs trying to sniff each other and play, plus trying to make off with the sausages! What were you thinking?

EasyToEatTiger · 28/08/2013 20:45

I was at the lottery kiosk. Not a major shop around the sausages Grin

I think supermarkets would be quite nerve jangling places for most dogs.

EasyToEatTiger · 28/08/2013 20:48

Had I seen a friendly face outside to keep an eye, I would have left the dog outside. I totally agree that dogs all over the shop is not a good thing. I would just prefer to see that it had been thought about so that under certain circumstances the dog would be safe.

You just shouldn't have taken the dog!
Really, a safe place to leave dogs? Safe from what? People? Other dogs? Meteorites?

furbaby · 28/08/2013 20:54

Yes everlong they are not allowed but after seeing kids with grubby hands all over fruit and veg my dogs are much more hygenic :)

Snowyelephantshavewrinkles · 28/08/2013 20:55

Sorry but I would be annoyed if I saw a dog in a supermarket. Even the best dogs can get silly.

You were at the lottery kiosk? Sounds like a non-essential supermarket journey in any case. Stay home with your dog and save your lottery pound for a muzzle. Did you win?

EasyToEatTiger · 28/08/2013 21:21

Even the best humans can get silly. I really hate supermarkets at the best of times. Bleurrrrgh. It is sometimes that people get caught out with their dogs and for a great many people, a dog is a member of the family and it would be fantastic if these things were considered. I'm certainly not suggesting that you should let loose a pack of hounds amongst the cooked meatsGrinbut I would like to see some kindness on the part of big corporations to people in their circumstances.

pigsDOfly · 28/08/2013 22:14

Sorry Furbaby but dogs do piss in shops. I was in Pets at Home once and a very large dog relieved himself all over one of those large sacks of dog food.

I adore my dog, but I leave her at home when I go to the supermarket (not sure how you get caught out and have to go into a supermarket) and there is no way I would tie her up outside. It's my responsibility to keep my dog safe not Tesco or Sainsburys.

WinkyWinkola · 28/08/2013 22:14

I'm certain it's just not really a policy priority.

furbaby · 28/08/2013 22:39

Yes fair comment pigsDofly ..... if dogs smell other dogs they do like to mark their spot :)
But as a whole they are better behaved than small children :)
